Best American rock band of all time

This is obviously a subjective post. As post suggest “all time” so feel free to go back to to the 50’s and please consider that bands from this millennium may not hold up in a couple decades. Also genre blending bands welcome.

I don’t know what to make of the fact that three of Tom Petty’s best albums are not the Heartbreakers, although Mike Campbell is on them.

The scene in the documentary with TP, explaining how he knew that the working relationship had run its course, talks about presenting a song in the Guys acting like it was lackluster… “And that song was free fall“… Makes me laugh my ass off every single time I think about it

Are you rating Highway Companion that highly?

Or are you talking Traveling Wilburys or Mudcrutch for the 3rd?

I think Damn The Torpedoes is his best, then Wildflower, then Hard Promises.

I am not a fan of Jeff Lynne, so Full Moon Feaver and Into The Great Wide Open go a bit stale with me rather quickly.

I’m rating Highway Companion that highly. I think it’s almost his most consistently great albums. Apparently, TP thought the same of it. I’ll concede it’s more mellow and lacks the edge of verve on his earlier albums. But I really think it’s successful. I listen to it more than Full Moon Fever, which is front loaded with hits but has a weaker side two

Edit: sorry. I missed that you don’t love FMF. And I can see why some don’t love Jeff Lynn :-). I’m just glad TP left us so much great music

Fair enough. Again I dont really like Lynne's production style. That is probably why American Companion never really grabbed me.

For what it is worth. I acknowledge that FMF is a very good record with some great songs on it. That and Cloud 9 by Harrison are, in my opinion, the most tolerable production work that Lynne has done.

Have yiu checked out any of Mike Campbell's recent albums with The Dirty Knobs?

I love those records, and got to see them last year on tour. Hell of a good show.
