Best American rock band of all time

This is obviously a subjective post. As post suggest “all time” so feel free to go back to to the 50’s and please consider that bands from this millennium may not hold up in a couple decades. Also genre blending bands welcome.

The Beach Boys. Pet Sounds literally changed the game for music as a whole

Rubber Soul did it first which inspired Brian to do Pet Sounds. Even though it was a popular record it would be overshadowed by Sgt Pepper's just half a year later. It's hard to say if Pet Sounds was the true paradigm shift when Rubber Soul was the lynchpin that brought that record together in the first place.

That's because we've all lived in a post-Pet Sounds world. Everyone at the time took notice of that record and everything was different after.

This is like when I showed my ex girlfriend the Godfather a decade ago and she said, "I don't see what's so great about it" which I attribute to the fact that so many groundbreaking elements in that movie became pop culture tropes

Objectively... that record sounds corny and dated, but it was a huge paradigm shift when it happened.
