Best American rock band of all time

This is obviously a subjective post. As post suggest “all time” so feel free to go back to to the 50’s and please consider that bands from this millennium may not hold up in a couple decades. Also genre blending bands welcome.

The Beach Boys. Pet Sounds literally changed the game for music as a whole

That’s what some of the best critics have said, but I still just don’t get it.

That's because we've all lived in a post-Pet Sounds world. Everyone at the time took notice of that record and everything was different after.

This is like when I showed my ex girlfriend the Godfather a decade ago and she said, "I don't see what's so great about it" which I attribute to the fact that so many groundbreaking elements in that movie became pop culture tropes

Objectively... that record sounds corny and dated, but it was a huge paradigm shift when it happened.
