I saw like 70% of it. I think it's fine that it's trying to do something different with the 'musical' genre, but I don't think it succeeds as the merging of music with actual dialogue is awkward, cringe and funny but not in a good way. You can't even speak of 'songs' most of the times, just dialogue which was sung. Plain stupid dialogue too, sometimes.

The acting overall is good though, Zoe Saldana is great.

The story is plain stupid. Motivations and decisions are all over the place, don't make any sense sometimes and seems to have a kindergarten level of understanding in portraying the Mexican culture.

It was clear as day that everything this movie is or stands for is being Oscar bait. I guess they managed on that front, so there's that.

Haven't seen the film, but your comment reminded me of the old 90s series Cop Rock.
