If Brian called his parents, and they did actually contact an attorney as it was suggested, then I would assume the first thing the attorney would tell them would be “don’t say a single word to the other family or the police, I will handle any contact with police if needed” or something along those lines. I think morally it’s terrible, but that’s how they have to handle it legally.
