Discussion Unknown Number High-school Catfish Spoiler

What the hell did I just watch? And what the hell was this person thinking?

I'm in shock that someone would do such a thing to their own child. And that she doesn't seem to have any focus on what she actually did.

The daughter didn't seem to grasp what her mother did when they told her but the father acted on it right away.

Was she totally jealous of her own daughter?

I couldn't believe it when she attempted to minimise her actions by comparing her conduct to people driving drunk but not getting caught for it. THAT'S BAD TOO!!! All she accomplished with that weird argument is to make me wonder what else she got up to in her spare time. People generally don't break the law in this way. It's telling that she thinks it's something people routinely do and that it's just a minor little slip up.

I also noticed she seemed to take that police interview in her stride and didn't really show any signs of distress until they said the other parents would have to be notified. Then she cared.

I think they told him on the phone, so finding out about the jobs was additional info to the shock of the phone call. Plus he probably realized at the same time that if she weren’t working… she was literally treating the sexual harassment and bullying of Lauryn and Owen as a full time job every day….

He already knew about all the other stuff, just not that it was her. The job stuff and what that implied was new information, so his reaction was quite normal. He's the one who made sure to separate her from the daughter. The bizarre thing in this scene was rather how the police didn't arrest her on the spot.

Just a theory, but I think the dad kept asking about the jobs because that’s how his mind is able to fully realize and accept that she sent the messages. Someone who worked two jobs most likely wouldn’t have time to send messages all day like that. Him realizing that she wasn’t at any job helps put 2 + 2 together about the fact that she really had all day long to do this.

To be fair, he would have been pretty stunned. Since they were there with a warrant to take his wife's phone, and they hadn't even confronted her yet, it's possible it hadn't yet sunk in that his wife had sent the texts, or that he wasn't sure whether to believe it. Whereas the employment stuff had already been verified by the police.

I mean if he was dead silent, I get it..but he seemed very aware to what was going on..he was telling her, she had to leave,  he was calling her parents, so it didn't seem like he was in shock..

Kendra seems very manipulative though. She fooled everyone that knew her so I wouldn't put the blame on the dad for not seeing that she's bat shit crazy and lying to this degree about who she really is

Everyone in her social circle thought she was a good person. You can't blame the husband, she conned him too. His reaction to finding out was a lot more responsible than the police, wanting to get her away from the daughter while they were just standing there not even arresting her after a full-blown confession to several major crimes.

No, no, no! This is not the attitude to take to people in relationships with abusers. It's always the abuser's fault. Abusive people are deceptive and manipulative in ways you can't imagine. All kinds of people find themselves married to abusers, even very intelligent and well-adjusted people.

There's absolutely no excuse for blaming the father for the mother's wrongs in this situation. She should bear 100% of the blame.

As someone who was in a relationship with a psychopath, I can fully admit that I had an attachment wound and I overlooked A LOT of red flags. I’m not blaming the dad at all, but at the same time, accountability for who you pick as your partner is important. That doesn’t mean he deserved the abused at all. But, as a victim, it’s incredibly important to look at what role you played in the relationship to stay with someone that volatile.

There is so much manipulation in everything she said to justify why she did it.

I absolutely believe there was an attraction to Owen. Jealousy of her own daughter. She loved the attention from her daughter, relationships with Jill, the control over everyone.

I wonder what everyone else thinks about Shawn and Lauryns involvement? I can’t believe they knew. But I’m glad they are keeping her daughter away from her mom, she was even manipulative from jail.

I noticed that too! I wondered if they were maybe planning a party or an event or something. It was certainly unusual.
