Maybe you should stop and think that it might be a good thing that is how their confirmation bias pops up. Many people try to relate emotionally to a story as they read it, and it's easier for them to picture themselves accused of something, anything that they didn't do than relate to the person who is behaving like a monster in these stories.

The comment you replied to? I thought those people in this comment section were mistaking the story (edit: headline)for a boyfriend girlfriend, romeo juliet thing, and not... whatever evil this story was. Which is why I suggested most people jump to that conclusion of the story being benign before reading it (which they would find outrageous), they don't expect the story to be like this (I did say the word monster). So yeah, it's not people seeing things as you characterized them just now.
