The DTR experience is probably over for good.

u/DistortedAudio Ravens 2d ago edited 2d ago

That game where he came in against us was maybe the worst I’ve ever felt for an opposing QB. It was like watching a waking nightmare.

255

u/Floober440 Browns 2d ago

You're not gonna believe this, but that wasn't even the worst he's played. I think the Dolphins game last year was even worse.

112

u/DistortedAudio Ravens 2d ago

Godamn, it’s hard to believe that. I just remember the line crumbling constantly, every pass being a pick.

There was a point where I was certain this was like a cosmic punishment towards him or something.

73

u/Floober440 Browns 2d ago

I think he came close to racking up the worst QB record EVER. He was somehow worse at throwing than fucking Garo Yepremian.

34

u/DistortedAudio Ravens 2d ago

Honestly that’s a cool game to play with your boys. Most obscure awful QB pull. Cody Kessler is a good one.

Josh Rosen seems like I'm kicking someone while they're down.

Curtis Painter also comes to mind.

Curtis Painter had a purpose though. That purpose was to secure the pick for Luck.

Think Rosen goes to Wharton now so he’ll be kicking you soon enough.

Also shout out to Rosen for being the only NFL player I can remember to be really vocal about climate change.

I was drunker than hell at that game and 3 or 4 drives in i told my friend I was done drinking bc I wanted to sober up and leave at halftime. You could tell this was beyond 1st game jitters. Good thing I stopped drinking, my life went into early labor that night lol.

Easy on my boy now! (Go Blazers)

I’ll never forgive whoever the OC was that night. They had a drive working with read options that ended in 3 and then decided “fuck it, chuck it Joe”

Which was never his strong point, even in college he was shaky as a consistent passer.

7

u/Objective-History402 Browns 2d ago

I was back in Ohio for the first time in years and decided to drive up for a game. Happened to be this game 😑

In all fairness, the odds weren't in my favor that I would have an enjoyable game to attend regardless.

2

u/so_zetta_byte Eagles 1d ago

For some reason, I'll never forget the Jets game where we sacked Luke Fall 9 times. Eventually it stops being fun.

There was also the commanders game where we sacked Wentz 9 times but that was... different. Not because of catharsis, but because I started to get genuinely frustrated with him that it seemed like his bad habits were getting worse, not better.

41

u/penis_showing_game 49ers 2d ago

I could see the Raiders kicking the tires on him being that O’Connell is confirmed to be out 6-8 weeks and DTR was Chip Kelly’s QB at UCLA

11

u/oscarnyc Giants 2d ago

DTR is maybe a practice squad guy. He's nowhere close to a QB2.

4

u/penis_showing_game 49ers 2d ago edited 2d ago

Oh I’m not saying he’d be QB2, but the only other QB on the roster besides Geno is 6th round rookie Cam Miller. I could absolutely see Chip bringing in DTR as QB3 or a practice squad player based purely on knowing the terminology and concepts of his offense.

These guys are never ever good in Canada.

It's not entirely clear to me why either, maybe the rules and field dimensions are different enough that they're fish out of water.

3

u/bradthewizard58 1d ago

As a Canadian who has family that loves the CFL - it mostly boils down to play style / offensive schemes, rules, and ball size.

The guys that are good here generally have stronger throwing arms as most throws you’re required to make are in the 8+ yard range. Theres less emphasis on accuracy and more about getting the ball to the spot it needs to be with as much zip as possible. Toss in the size and weight of the Canadian ball and suddenly guys who have less arm strength in college struggle to stick here.

This guy might actually be the worst NFL QB I’ve ever seen. At least Peterman has an okay NFL arm. This guy is legitimately not good at anything. Even Tim Boyle has 5x as many Touchdowns.

110

u/Davy257 Rams 2d ago

Tim Boyle is a backup QB cockroach, I’ve never seen someone like him get so many opportunities

101

u/WagonWheel22 Packers 2d ago

He’s basically a QB Coach that can play QB in a SHTF situation.

40

u/TyButler2020 Steelers 2d ago

Was gonna say Boyle gets very high praise for his film work and helping the starting qb leading into the week

Rodgers demanded the packers kept him around because of that when he was there

19

u/Maeserk Broncos Lions 2d ago

Rodgers is also probably the reason why Boyle signed with the Jets in 2023. Rodgers getting hurt (and Zach Wilson being ass) also was the reason why Boyle even got 2 starts that year; Saleh really started him to just prove a point just how ass their QB situation was.

5

u/AtBat3 Eagles 2d ago

I’m usually an optimist, but literally every single decision he made was wrong.

32

u/Bruinrogue 2d ago

He was maddening to watch at UCLA and honestly surprised he managed to stay in the league all this time.

15

u/Archelon225 Rams 2d ago

For me it was always fun to watch DTR hit the legs and hurdle defenders in the Rose Bowl, but I was worried that his fundamentals on reading a defense and making accurate throws were shaky for league standards. Also he's fragile and afraid to run against NFL linebackers, so combine that with a lack of development and loss of confidence, and he doesn't seem to have any upside nowadays to offset his big flaws.

I thought he was pretty good for the Bruins in his last two years, that said we had a supporting cast of NFL skill players at the time and a Chip Kelly offense that didn't ask for heroics from the QB. I remember reading that he didn't even expect to be drafted, so he's probably been about as surprised as you that he stayed in the league for two years. Probably a good time for him to hang up the cleats, but if he wants a last chance maybe he can go knock on Chip's door at the Raiders.

29

u/shit_eating_fan Eagles 2d ago

Howell has actually won NFL games before and he actually played well vs. us when he was in Washington. He can at least sling it and maybe chuck coin flip balls to AJ or something like that

DTR is irredeemably ass.

Either way he's gonna be QB3 so it's only in disaster situations where he'd be playing. McKee is an amazing backup and if both QB's fall it's cooked anyway so it's whatever

11

u/Sechzehn6861 Eagles 2d ago

Howell cut us up a few times. Sirianni thinks there's something there, seemingly. And he couldn't be much worse than DTR looked, really. In an ideal world it'll be academic and he won't see the field.

Sam Howell is bad, don’t get me wrong. He was awful in training camp and in the preseason. I am just as glad as you are that we traded him away

4

u/IZY53 Browns 2d ago

We were getting trade offers for him after his first pre season, where he had a strong showing.
He was fast, had a zippy kind of arm. He beat out the Pastronaught for a roster spot.

Then when NFL came to real NFL games he was horrid, he did not throw a single layered throw, everything was a bullet pass and his accuracy was spotty.

He did have a win vs the steelers in a defensive battle and he had to show up with a couple of good throws.

But he really did collapse and regress as a passer even looking awful in this past pre season. From all accounts he is a student of the game, a good worker and in shape, but it seems liek a case of quick sand where, even his hard work leads to sinking.

I think a little of it is the curse of being a decent athlete, where he has not developed completely as a passer, hitting the 2nd level throw. As a passer he reminds me a little of Brandon Weeden, Weeden could not layer a throw to save his life, he had a great bullet pass, or that kind of baseball throw on a line pass, but getting it over a guy no chance.

As a QB you cannot just get better at your strengths, you have to have a variety of excellent tools. When Lamar Jackson came into the league, he was limited as a passer, but his athletic traits where so high he could get a way with it, and to his credit, he has developed into a heck of passer, the same with Josh Allen.

5

u/RenaissanceHumanist Bears 2d ago

He seemed to have great upside coming into the league for someone in his draft position, but he never developed and looked atrocious when given opportunity.

I hope he can find a good coach to unlock the potential some of us saw in him

He was so bad that it was making it impossible to even evaluate our receivers, so they sat him for the 3rd game and let McCord play the entire game. DTR was clearly getting cut after that. The only I guess surprise is that McCord was unimpressive enough that they decided to get Howell.
