Build/Photos Finally
I’ve finally joined the 90 train. Had a 4070 and upgraded to a 5080, then just sold that for what I paid…bought myself a 5090. Man is she thiccc, should I put 140mm fans on the bottom now?

Those better be dummy sticks

u/uDoneDeleted 4h ago
I’m pretty sure that specific model of ram sells dummy sticks for like 10 a piece

u/howyaduuurin 8h ago
Yes. Fans on the bottom for sure then undervolt that champ to get temps down with the same performance as stock.

u/ControlAltDel69 7h ago
What do I undervote to? Sounds like you’ve done it once or twice😂

https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1jaz2yq/5090fe_undervolt_guide_better_than_stock_at_450w/
Follow this guide. It's a fun thing to learn and there isn't anything bad that can happen. I have mine at 890mv at 2760, I landed with same stock performance with more efficiency for temps. My temps stay in the 50's under heavy load and between 200-450W with the same amount of frames I was getting under stock. I watched his video, then read the tutorial, then read through the comments. Just play with it and see where you want to land.

I have the liquid version and it looks tiny compared to this one :D Great card though, i do recommend you undervolt it a bit!

u/ControlAltDel69 5h ago
Another guy or 2 have recommended that. He linked a video so I’ll be watching that today after work 🤙🏽

I have the AORUS Master Ice paired with a 9950X3D and the ASUS SWIFT PG27UCDM.
No compression or upscaling - and this beast is easily pushing 240hz or more.
The AMDip is annoying (1% lows drop heavily randomly) and I haven’t figured it out yet.
But overall I am super happy, and I’m looking forward to my pimax super 57!!! I think this card will easily push this headset.

u/ControlAltDel69 2h ago
Hell yea man got any pics? I liked the auros master ice but was just a little too far out of my “budget”🤣I know these cards and budget don’t belong in the same sentence but still. I haven’t got a chance to see what she’s all about. I was able to just put it in and then had to reinstall drivers and then I headed to bed. Today after work when I get home, I’m going ti watch a video a guy linked here for undervolting.

And here I am in Europe where this card costs me a whole months pay...
1
u/Michaeli_Starky 5h ago
You're from richer part of the Europe I see
2
u/Vaeghar Gigabyte RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G 5h ago
Well, Benelux, so richer part, yes A whole lot of taxes, also yes
•
u/Michaeli_Starky 8m ago
Just imagine the countries where people have to pay 2 or even 3 times their monthly salary... and the taxes are mostly going to someone's pocket instead of the country's budget... my comment is mostly pointless, but I hope it makes you feel a little better :) Americans are dealing with a lot of shit themselves, btw, so no real point in being envious of them...

How’s the performance difference from the 80 to the 90? Are you at 4k?
2
u/FrequentWrangler1439 8h ago
In 3440x1440 In cyberpunk going from 5080 to 5090 Everything maxed, path tracing, dlss quality, x2 frame gen I got about a 60fps increase. It's not 4k but its something.
1
u/Current-Pirate7328 6h ago
At 4k you're gonna get like 30% gains minimum Swapped to a 5090 from a 5080 last night. If you want 4k without any major concessions, 5090 is it. If you don't mind concessions, the 5070ti does well, I don't think 5080 is really worth buying atm, I'd wait for a super version

u/refinedmercy 2h ago
Those 30% fps uplift is huge tho especially at 4k gaming, because your base frames are super important for using multi frame gen 3x or 4x, in a lotta games that 30% uplift is what will take you over 60fps base in native 4k. This means significantly less latency, and much more usable MFG. If we’re talking base performance then sure, but with 5090 you can exponentially scale it better from its base. Definitely one of my fav things about the 5090 👌

u/Waldoj91 33m ago
That makes sense, thanks! I’m wondering though, just from an experience point of view, if you turn off the frame counter when using a 5080 and 5090, would It actually feel better? Or, is the fps just higher?

u/refinedmercy 20m ago
FPS can only meaningfully display up to your monitor (or TV) refresh rate (Hz). If you get a 5090 and it’s running 300+ fps but you only have a 120hz monitor, you’ll only see up to 120 frames.
For the visual fps clarity itself? General rule of thumb i’ve heard is that anything from 0-60fps will be very noticeable and make a huge difference. This is partly why 60fps is the standard baseline expectation for modern gaming now. 60-120 or 144fps will also feel noticeably sharp and faster, but not as huge of a jump from let’s say 30-60fps. I game on a 120hz OLED TV for 4k and a 240hz 1440p OLED monitor for esports games, and I personally can see a difference up to 240. If you have an OLED display that tracks perfect colors with each movement, 240fps feels like black magic and like an actual 3d scene playing out in front of you.
TL;DR
- 60 fps = industry baseline
- 40 fps = minimum baseline IMO
- 70-90 fps = noticeably better than 60
- 90-120 fps = personal sweet spot for 4k or singleplayer cinematic games
- 144-240 fps = for esports games/competitive shooter games where twitchy movement really matters
For 5080 vs 5090? I 100% felt a difference and even more with frame gen. The 5080 would average like 30-40 fps or so in native 4k, and is weaker than the last generation’s flagship 4090. The 5090 clears 60+ fps on the highest settings easily and it’s very noticeable in every movement and thing you do ingame

I’m using a 240 Hz 4K OLED right now and I enjoy FPS games, it’s definitely hard to hit that 240 Hz with a 5080!

u/Waldoj91 6h ago
Thank you! I got the 5080 FE on launch at MSRP, I’ve just been seeing more 5090s reach MSRP recently and was debating selling the 5080 but I may just hold onto it for now. It’s a solid card
1
u/refinedmercy 2h ago
one of the biggest differences is that you get a higher usually 60+ base fps in most games at 4k native even with high or ultra settings. This makes MFG 3x and 4x way more usable on the 5090, because the higher base frames breaking 60+ significantly improves base latency and any delays there. 5090 made 4k gaming fps scale exponentially much better at 3x and 4x frames, which i never even knew would be a feature of the 5090. so on paper in some games it seems like just a 30-40% performance uplift over the 5080 isn’t huge, that uplift is often what takes your base fps into “well usable” territory on the 5090 and THAT opens up so much more stuff

That's one thick boi right there, looks sick dude congrats!

u/ControlAltDel69 5h ago
Man when I took it out the box I was impressed haha. I had a 5080 and sold that for what I bought it for and got this yesterday. I haven’t had time to take it for a spin. Just had time to install it wipe things down and before I knew it it was way late. I didn’t get home till sort of late to begin with

Why not use the cable the gpu came with?
1
u/ControlAltDel69 2h ago
Because I didn’t want to? I’m using the original 600w cable from msi and not like it’s some off brand extension cable

Mine is getting delivered this Thursday , can't wait to return the Venus and put this bad boy in.

u/ControlAltDel69 2h ago
I almost got that one but then I checked microcenters website and the suprim had come up in stock so I said “I’ll take that thank you”
•
u/RemyGOLD 15m ago
Yeah.... Vent is is doing pretty well now with the under volt but I feel like the suprim I can push it even further with less power

u/IntelligentDuck6064 11h ago
To this day, I still kick myself for getting a vanguard over the suprim. Oh wale, a 5090 is a 5090. Congrats and happy gaming!

So the melting issue isn't big deal like i tought or you just keep replacing the cable everytime it happens.

u/THE_HERO_777 12h ago edited 8h ago
Just connect the 12VHPWR cable that comes with your PSU and that's it. Do not use any adapters or 3rd party cables.
