people walking on frozen lakes make me so anxious especially when it’s cracking

u/Live_Angle4621 1d ago
The first person was pretty insane. The second seemed closer to shore/less water under

They're in like a foot of water with waterproof boots. They'll be okay.

There's no water there. The ice is from when the water was higher. When it receded, it left a sheet of ice several inches above some muck. When you walk across, the ice breaks but keeps you from sinking in the muck.
Source: Lots of winter hikes in New England.

u/Live_Angle4621 1d ago
Yes I assumed no water but I was not certain if it was nothing at all. So I said less

u/cpMetis 1d ago
I was pretty sure the second one was on grass.
Happens if you get snow then thick ice plus modest temps. The top layer of ice is thick enough to stay together as the snow below melts away, then you have a layer of ice over an air gap and grass.
Same effect as when you walk through snow and the top is rock solid but the inside is powdery. Just trickier to happen.

My da told a story about a work colleague from the Philippines who was being driven by a couple colleagues from Minnesota.
The driver said "Hey, I know a shortcut!" and proceeded to drove across the frozen lake to the road on the other side.
Totally freaked the Filipino dude out lol. Said something like, "My family will never believe how I died."

As someone who lives in a place that never snowed this looks like science fiction to me

u/SirUntouchable 1d ago
In high school in the US, our class had a foreign exchange student from Mexico. She had never seen snow. So when it finally started snowing, we actually paused class for a short bit to take her outside, her face of joy and wonder seriously made my day.

u/CressFuzzy1935 1d ago
That’s amazing! First-time snow reactions are priceless like seeing a whole new world open up right before your eyes.

u/Niubai 1d ago
I'm brazilian, and the 1st time I saw heavy snow while in Canada I was marveled. But to be really frank with you, after the 3rd or 4th day it kinda started to be more of a nuisance. I love the cold, because I'm from southern Brazil and we get some really cold days during winter, but heavy snow seems like something that I couldn't imagine myself living with it for a whole season.
Of course people who are born and raised into it will deal with it way better than I did.
9
u/dasruski 1d ago
I don't mind snow at all until it comes time to leave my home. But being inside on a winter day is one of my favorites. Plus it can be used to not go to things you don't want to.
3
u/Niubai 1d ago edited 1d ago
But being inside on a winter day is one of my favorites.
EXACTLY, there's nothing more cosier than that and that's what people living in tropical countries can't get to experiment. Being with friends around a fireplace in comfortable chairs with blankets while drinking wine with heavy snow falling outside was easily the cosiest moment in my life. I miss that a lot.
I cannot see myself leaving Brazil for once, but i really wish I was rich enough to have a place in Canada so I could go back and forth depending on the weather, guess that's what rich people do.

Sounds like Canada just officially made you an unofficial Canadian because that's how all northerners feel about snow. Awesome! Oh wait this shit kind of sucks
I'll take it over heat and humidity any day though
It's beautiful but what it is is a beautiful nuisance, like a pretty girlfriend who's a little mentally unstable. I'm not gonna say no but you frustrate me sometimes
Your hockey jersey is in the mail but we only had Edmonton left, sorry bud. I do have this Zach Parise jersey slightly used if you want to come to the Minnesota side though. Then I got Vancouver but I was just gonna burn those

Went to Hokkaido to snowboard last January. The first night it started snowing, after a warm spell for the first few days we were there, we stopped at an onsen outside Sapporo. It was phenomenally beautiful, with an outdoor pool surrounded in snowy pillows and trees of hanging lace. Heard some excited American English from another group in the pool, and struck up conversation. Apparently they were from San Diego, and one guy, 30s-ish, had never seen snow before. He was just staring in awe at the falling flakes and giggling.
Talk about an epic first snow!
11
u/Prestigious-Diver-94 1d ago
My first serious snow was also in Hokkaido! I'm from the Southern US so it was amazing to see snow drifts taller than me. What an absolutely beautiful place.

That's crazy to me, because Big Bear and Mt. Baldy are like right there. I also grew up in Coastal SoCal, and we would do day trips up to the snow every winter.

Rule one of snowballs and face washes, no ice.
Ice is fine if you want to dump it down the back of their coat but never throw it
I mean shit I've seen guys get thrown out of hockey games for spraying ice with skates on purpose, and that's about the consistency of an Icee, ice can cut

I saw snow for the first time this july in the Andes, haha! Although I didn't get to see it actually snowing, it was fun to walk around in (and my socks got soaked), and make snowballs

As someone who is a couple of months away from our snowy season, this gave me shivers and PTSD flashbacks lol
3
u/Upbeat_Literature483 1d ago
I was snowed in my apartment with no power for 3 days a few Christmases back. I get that PTSD reference. Almost died trying to get to my car to charge my phone. I didn't make it to the car and I barely made it back. Stupid move.

Funny enough, this can often happen in places that don't have as much snow, but get freezing rain with temps that hover just below freezing.
4
u/UrUrinousAnus 1d ago
This is winter in England now. When I was a child, we had proper snow, but it's a very rare sight nowadays.
2
u/TheWonderMittens 1d ago
Don’t worry, when the Gulf Stream collapses England will have the climate of comparable latitudes in Canada or Siberia 👍
7
u/Novaer 1d ago
As a Canadian I know it's so obvious but it sounds so wild to me that there are people that go their entire lives without ever seeing snow. You gotta experience it!

Yeah, I’m not sure that produce will survive… My favorite was the fence, I think. I love all of these but they made me so feel so cold! Only a couple of people wore gloves. I love that cracking ice sound… The very occasional snow we get where I live is OK. But I couldn’t imagine months and months of living in this kind of weather. Brrrrr…

Note: If your car is glazed like that, you probably shouldn't be driving at all.

11
u/Regular-Engineer-686 1d ago
What? That’s every winter day in the Northeast
2
u/ZugZugGo 1d ago
Yeah I have no idea what this person is talking about. That's just another Tuesday in a lot of places in NA and saying you shouldn't be driving is so impractical as to be kind of useless advise. Knock the ice off, get snow tires, the roads are taken care of in most places where this is an issue to let life keep moving.
→ More replies (2)9
u/vezwyx 1d ago
That's what salted roads are for
→ More replies (1)3
u/shadowtheimpure 1d ago
Depends on how cold it is, as salt stops being effective below -9c (15f)
→ More replies (3)3
u/SubstantialParsley 1d ago
When it’s too cold for salt they just put dirt
2
u/UrUrinousAnus 1d ago
Salt+grit is the usual one here in the UK, but it's rarely necessary anymore and fucks up the underside of cars even more than just salt.

u/Doofy_Grumpus 1d ago
Not with that attitude. I live in frozen shithole in this video, what am I just not supposed to travel for half of the year?
→ More replies (18)→ More replies (5)2
u/Magnus_Helgisson 1d ago
At least shouldn’t let the ice on the car drop like that, the paint won’t thank you for accumulating micro scratches.
11
u/Doofy_Grumpus 1d ago
In the winter we cover our roads with salt and sand, it’s like driving in a sandblasting cabinet.

u/Magnus_Helgisson 1d ago
True, I’m in Ukraine and it’s all too familiar to me. I’m so jealous when I see some video about an old BMW in California that just has some engine issues. Yeah, here the old BMW-s have the engine issues plus such a minor downside as a completely rotten body due to exposure to all that shit. Even more prominent with Mazda. USA people drive like 1st gen Mazda 6 nowadays, and here I dare anyone to find a good looking 1st gen Mazda 6 that isn’t 50% construction foam.

one of nature's most spectacular sights is dawn in the woods after an ice storm.

u/Lefty_22 1d ago
LPT: Don't pull on your car door if the door is frozen shut like that. You could rip the handle right off. Ask me how I know.
Car door handles today are just made of plastic. And changing a door handle is a massive pain in the ass, you have to take the door completely apart from the inside.

Not related to the post but I have a question about this sub. I tried to post something that I considered satisfying and worth sharing but the post got immediately deleted because I didn't have 3000 comments karma. Why does it work that way? Isn't 3000 comments karma like a lot? I just wanted to share a video 😭

Technically these are all the same form (or phase) of ice, standard crystalline ice 1h (the h stands for hexagonal).

I remember seeing a video like this with a bunch of guys screaming BREAK IT and then going apeshit over it.
I loved it.

u/Mekdinosaur 1d ago
When I was a kid, I remember that I had to jump in every frozen over mud puddle on the way home from school. Probably took me 2 hours to walk three blocks, but i smashed every bit of ice. Mom was hysterical. I had to explain my mission in great detail to get her to calm down.

For those who haven’t experienced this, each of these ice situations have a different smell, feel, touch, taste (through the air, but also if you to taste a bit), and I’m sure many other senses I’m missing. Winter can be beautiful. It also can really suck.
And yes, there are more than 5 senses. Think movement, balance, time, etc.

I have a frozen drain line in my freezer I’ve not been able to fix. It’s almost worth the peeling of the sheet of ice to have it keep freezing over. Almost.

No nearly melted lake ice? It turns into like a weird honeycomb that is so satisfying to break. I used to take a canoe out into a frozen lake and when it was nearly melted you could paddle through it when it was still like 6 inches thick because it would break apart so easily.

My kids and I LOVE going out after a good freeze and doing this! It really is satisfying, from peeling the ice slowly from whatever molded into shape, to admiring the fact that solid water can form such beauty, and finally the cacophony of us tossing our finds just to hear that unique crash, tinkle tinkle tinkle that comes but one time a year.
