hot take but this scene genuinely was just filler— they didn’t DO anything significant with Rita’s death, Dexter was just insane for a few episodes and then the show fucking glosses over it, it doesn’t develop his character at all, he never ruminates on it and nothing changes because of it

this scene had ridiculous potential to launch an arc of dexter truly realizing he ruins everything he touches like doakes said, or genuinely any other option, but they just did fucking nothing

I think in shows like this, the partner either has to become a full on participant (Lumen, Hannah) or be completely oblivious like Jamie (not a partner but still living in his house).

Otherwise the partner will just keep going around in circles like Skyler on Breaking Bad.

I was so disappointed with how they handled it. I wanted Dexter to give up killing and only help the police for a while until a killer slipped through the cracks because the system is broken, thus reinforcing the need for the code and prompting Dexter to get back into killing.

The only thing it does is get the kids to leave, but I feel like the first half of season 5 was building it up in such an interesting way
