Anyone here run a blog or local website about Orleans?

Hey,

I’m starting a local directory for halal places in Ottawa (restaurants, grocery stores, cafés, etc.) and I’m looking to partner with people who already run Orleans or Ottawa-based blogs or local websites.

The idea:

  • I can write content / guest blog posts for you.

  • In return, I’d like to link back to my directory.

  • Win-win: you get fresh content, I get exposure.

If you’ve got a blog, a food review site, or any Ottawa-focused platform, let’s connect!

Happy to chat more if it sounds interesting. 🙌

The taste of the tap water is different now

Update 2 Sept 2025: (speech to dictation voicemail from the City of Ottawa, personal info removed),
“…we are experiencing a seasonal taste and odour event from the Ottawa river just due to the low water levels and the really high temperatures we’ve been having with the last month, and it's got to do with some of the aquatic organic compounds that are in the water. We do remove some through our treatment, but unfortunately, we can't remove them all. This does not affect the safety of the water. We are still continuing sampling the water quality across the city over 50 locations. If you have an issue, you can always just try putting it in the fridge to cool it down or some customers have been using some carbon filters such as the carafe or ?? (speak to text dictation literally wrote “junk file” and that is what it sounded like she said lol so idk) and then putting that in the fridge.”

I don’t love that answer if I’m being honest. Has anyone had any luck with the carbon filters?

———

Update 29 Aug 2025: I called the city (311). Just a heads up if you call, it was 90+ minutes on hold this morning lol. It’s all good though. They sent a request to the water department and in 10 days or less someone will be in touch to come take a water sample. They didn’t know how long of a wait it would be to actually come get the sample lol. At least it’s progress but I definitely probably should have called about it earlier.

———

It started tasting like algae/musty aquarium late June this year.

The taste went away for 3-4 weeks, but it’s been pretty constant since. I could smell my bath water running the other night—it was earthy, like beets.

Apparently the Ottawa river “blooms” when it gets hot, so I figured it was the cause. It’s not very hot right now though, and last night my drinking water tasted so earthy it was almost like mold. I believe it’s worse in the evenings but I could be wrong about that.

Anyone else experiencing this? I hope it’s the river being normal for Orleans so I can stop worrying about plumbing and my sense of smell. I’m open to any experience or input you may have though. Thank you!

Gym Suggestions - moving away from Movati

Currently at Movati but not getting our moneys worth as we haven't been getting to classes or using the pool. Looking for more basic gym with machines and weights... and a better price than Movati. I'd love to hear about what you've like or disliked like at local gyms. I was with Fit4Less years ago and it was totally fine, may go back there but curious if there are other options that would be better. Thanks.

CLAIRVOYANT/PYSHIC in the area

Bit of a long shot but years ago (around 2019) I saw a clairvoyant/Pyshic in the Orleans/Cumberland area. It was a woman and she was LEGIT(yes, yes despite what others may think or say) I tried contacting her years later and her number is disconnected and she’s wiped off the internet completely. I’m wondering if anyone would be able to help. She went by the name Mme. L - wondering if she still does it? Where she is now, etc? Any insights would help! TIA

Parents: how did you finally get a daycare spot?

I’ve been on the daycare waitlist since the end of 2024 and I’m still sitting around #250. I’ve applied to 9 different daycares through the registry, but none seem to have openings. I’ll be needing a spot by February next year, and I’m starting to get nervous.

For those who’ve been through this — is there anything else I can do to improve my chances, or other options I should be looking into?

Anyone has gone to Appletree on Spark street on a Saturday?

I have been there a few times on a weekday. Just noticed that they are also open on Saturday. Has anyone been there on a Saturday? What's your experience like?

On a weekday, I usually go there to wait in line at 6:30. If I go on a Saturday, what time should I be there if I want to be the first few patients in line?
