Announcement Announcement: Please don't share screenshots of other subs talking about r/petfree

Hello fellow petfree members,

We’d like to ask everyone to please not share screenshots of posts from other subreddits that mention r/petfree.

Recently, there's been a rise in brigading attempts from a subreddit that frequently allows sharing content from here. Unfortunately, their mod team isn't taking action to prevent it and while it’s disappointing, we don’t need to get drawn into what they're doing.

Fact is that the kinds of people who are upset by posts on this sub are the reason this sub exists in the first place. Their values and beliefs are at odds with ours so it's obvious that they’ll be agitated by our discussions. And since we don’t allow them in to argue on here and harass our posters they’re finding other places to vent and complain about us.

We also understand that its upsetting to see our posts being shared elsewhere, but reposting what they’re saying only creates a cycle of hate-posting and drama. If other subs want to allow that, so be it. We’re happy with our community and will continue our conversations as usual, without engaging with them.

On a positive note, all the attention brings more petfree people our way. So while annoying, it actually helps our community grow.

Let’s keep our space clean and avoid sharing their negativity, drama and judgement. We, the mod team, make every effort to remove all such comments and posts from this sub. There's no reason why negative and judmental posts/comments should now make their way into our sub through screenshots.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks,

The Pet-Free Mod Team

Announcement Announcement: This sub is now becoming pet owner free. Pet owners will no longer be allowed to post/comment.

Hello everyone,

We have an important announcement to make: we are now making this sub exclusively for pet-free individuals.

You can still participate if you are in a relationship with someone who has pets but identify as pet-free, or if you are in the process of transitioning to a pet-free lifestyle (these will be your last ones etc). However, individuals who currently have pets and/or plan to have pets in future will no longer be allowed to post here.

This decision has been made due to the increasing number of people who refuse to respect our subreddit's rules of engagement. Recently, a lot of pet owners have been coming here to:

  • Talk about their pets
  • Glorify themselves with "I'm Not Like Other Pet Owners" type comments
  • Get defensive on behalf of pets
  • Argue in favor of keeping pets, list their advantages, or, worse, recommend specific breeds/types of pets
  • Excuse bad pet behavior
  • Engage in lengthy discussions about appropriate pet care
  • Dismiss the concerns of pet-free people, such as allergies and phobias
  • Get upset when their pro-pet viewpoints aren't welcomed here

Additionally, there are dog-free pet owners who, for some reason, feel the need to engage with dog-related posts here. While they are not allowed here (as stated in a pinned announcement), they continue to engage with this sub's content.

The number of such individuals is rapidly approaching a thousand per day, and it has become unmanageable for our mod team. Therefore, we are closing the sub to people with pets. To those who own pets and have been following our sub rules, we apologize for the changes, but the number of problematic pet owners has simply become too large for us to manage. If A few changes will take place over the coming days:

  • Pet-free flairs will become mandatory again for participation
  • All flairs indicating pet ownership will be removed
  • Some new and interesting flair options will be introduced
  • Users with the "Hate Pet Culture" or "Against Dangerous Dog Breeds" flair who are pet-free will be asked to select another flair
  • Anyone with pets will not be allowed to post. If you choose a pet-free flair to continue participating, you will be temporarily banned.

Thank you for reading this message.

Have a great day!

Want to be petfree Woken up in the middle of the day by dogs barking, come out to shit smeared everywhere.

I'm too sleep deprived to make a long ass post, I can feel my IQ actively dropping due to not being able to reach rem sleep. Basically what happened is I work 3rd shift, and so I sleep during the day. 3rd shifters receive zero empathy from anyone, and this is fine, I'm used to it by now. Today, I went to bed around 9:30am, and by about 1:30pm I had to wake up because my family's fucking dogs were going insane for absolutely no fucking reason. It is now 10pm and I have not been able to get any sleep. I laid down to try and take a nap, but got up needing to pee. I come out of my room to see shit all over my bathroom floor, the stairs, and the hallway in between. I had to clean every bit of it up myself, as fucking usual. I hate dogs so much it's unreal

Pet owners making our lives hell My autistic brother can't even go to the park without being terrorized by dogs

I have a severely autistic brother who’s 21 and non verbal. One thing he really loves is going to the park, so I take him there often. You’d think that should be a peaceful activity. But every single time, without fail, someone’s off-leash dog comes running up to him.

He’s absolutely terrified of dogs. They can sense his fear instantly, and they’ll charge right up, bark in his face, and he ends up screaming and yelling in panic. And then I’m left trying to calm him down while the owner half-heartedly shouts “don’t worry, they’re friendly!” as if that magically makes it okay.

Do you know what that looks like to him? It looks like an attack. It feels like abuse. And it happens over and over because people think their “fur baby” deserves to roam everywhere more than my brother deserves to exist in peace.

It’s disgusting how normalized it is that dogs are allowed to harass vulnerable people in public spaces. My brother has just as much right to use the park as anyone else, yet he can’t enjoy it without being ambushed by someone’s pet.

I hate dogs. I hate their entitled owners even more. And I hate that the world bends over backwards for them while people like my brother get traumatized again and again.

Ethics of Pet Ownership Genuine question, let me know if this violates TOS

What aspect of pet ownership drives you personally away? I personally don't disagree with those who own pets, I just prefer keeping working animals outdoors/in specific rooms. While I don't agree with some things on this subreddit, I'm looking to learn from others point of view, is it the fault of the owner? Or the idea of pet ownership?

Vent / Rant I can't believe this is happening to my family...

I hated real dogs but still fond of them in shows or anything affiliated about them and I'm glad finally found a community that can probably understand the situation im in right now and im just want to rant a bit. I'm basically having a fight with my mom over a dog in the bedroom because basically her dog smells bad and can't sleep together with her because there's no room for myself to sleep alone and for the first time tell her this, just because I'm only saying that her dog smells she's seem offended and she said she'll go away with her dog and leave me inside her house ALONE forever plus I'm just 16 years old idk what to do if she's leaving, and it's all because of a dog that she kept him as "toys". i can't really believe this is happening and I'm so sad right now I honestly love her and can't expect this to happen. idk what should i do in this situation. I don't know if this is my fault or not.. i don't know why she's this sensitive over a dog.. now I don't know how long my relationship with her will last. i need advice on how to survive in this situation. edit: fixed grammar

Vent / Rant I was once an entitled pet owner

I cringe so bad thinking back to this memory. I was like 17 or 18 and I had just gotten a new dog. I always just assumed everyone liked dogs and everyone liked MY dog because I liked my dog. Whenever I would order on favor and they’d get to my apartment, I’d open the door and let my dog out to jump on them and lick them. There was one time when I opened the door, dog ran out, jumped on the guy and the guy got mad and told me “that’s not very nice” and he stormed off and left my food on the floor a couple feet away. I feel so disgusting about it now, what was I even thinking. As a person that heavily dislikes animals now, I hate people like the person I used to be. I wish I could apologize to that delivery driver. He didn’t deserve that.

Vent / Rant Thankful for a Dog-Free Childhood

I’m so grateful I grew up in a household without dogs. This video is exactly why. The thing is lunging for a scrap like it’s entitled to it, it's infuriating. And the dad laughing in the background? Pathetic. What kind of parent finds it funny when their kid gets knocked over by a selfish mutt? It’s not cute at all. I feel for anyone stuck in a house with these food-obsessed mongrels. My childhood was peaceful without dogs scheming for every bite I took. Anyone else relieved to have dodged that chaos growing up?

This man wanted to take his Pitbull (he claims it is a different breed) into planet fitness. He was refused. Everyone in the comments told him to sue. Actually, his next video said he was on a trip with the dog to have her bred.

My guess is he is not diagnosed with anything and his dog probably has a history of aggression which is why he didn't pursue legal action.

Vent / Rant Practically every new movie is just a pet ad nowadays …

Dog. Cat. Dog. Cat. Insert other animal here. Dog. Cat. Dog. Cat. Insert other animal here – Ad

This is what movies have become unfortunately. Full of household pets. That clip is just the first scene of „Nobody 2“ and we’re already seeing the dog in the very center, and of course with the obligatory anthropomorphization by asking „who the fuck are you two?“ implying that the dog resembles human characteristics with a personality 🤦🏻‍♂️

Want to be petfree My roommates cat is an absolute terror and I can’t stand living with it anymore

Normally I don’t mind cats but good lord that cat is a fucking asshole. He’s constantly swiping at me and attacking my feet, randomly bolts at me and scares the shit out of me for no reason, and goes out of his way to try and attack me even if I’m deliberately trying to avoid him.

Sometimes I have to throw things at him to get him to go away because he won’t stop attacking me. He’s pounced at my feet multiple times while I was cooking or carrying heavy things, and I’m counting down the days until I seriously injure myself.

That plus he’s constantly crying and scratching at my door to the point where it wakes me up almost every night. He waits by my bedroom door and tries to run into my room when he knows damn well he’s not allowed in there. He knocks my stuff over, then yowls at me and attacks me whenever I try to get him out. I can’t leave my door open for even 5 seconds without him bolting in to terrorize me.

And let’s not forget my roommates never change his litter box which is right next to the toilet, so trying to use the bathroom is like walking into a gas chamber because it reeks of pure ammonia. I’ve gone across the street to use the bathroom at the gas station nearby because it stinks so bad in there.

I genuinely hate that cat so much. He’s literally exactly like the cat Lucifer from the 1950’s Cinderella movie. I don’t think I’ll ever live with a cat ever again.

Science / Laws Its really nice having a community here and a place to vent but its time we took action before its too late.

There are quite a few psycho redditors who cannot handle differing opinions who are also dog nutters (suprise suprise). They want this sub gone and it's a possibility it may happen one day. With that being said id love if we could band together and take some actions towards changing things regarding dogs in grocery stores and restaurants, like petitioning, contacting local govs, calling health departments, putting stores and resturants on blast on local social media pages when dogs do something gross in them. I am testing the waters seeing whats already being done or what you guys think. I am ready to join up or start my own campaign for the sanity and health of those of us who havent been infected with nutteritous

Petfree lifestyle People smelling like cat pee

Dude some people in public actually stink so bad... : (. I am understanding why people don't like cats at all. I preferred them to dogs cuz less clingy and usually they stunk less in my personal experience...That was until I had to keep smelling people that seem like they use cat pee as their cologne...

I kinda just feel bad for them too.

Pet owners making our lives hell I’m Mad As Hell - Why are pets inside stores, making places for humans nasty?

Just saw this guy's rant about dogs in retail spaces, restaurants & humans not cleaning up after them!

"I’m Mad As Hell"...."since when did the pets start running the humans"...

  • Why are we allowing pets inside stores and restaurants, making places for humans nasty?
  • Dogs are basically in charge of human's whole day now! When you say their pet won't control your day, you are the asshole...

Vent / Rant Neighbor's dog won't shut up

Exactly what the title says. Their dog won't shut up whenever they're out, unless at least one person is home that thing is constantly barking and howling even if they're gone all day. I'm on maternity leave right now it's driving me nuts how often I hear that mutt. I'm going to get barking roulette for two months. Oh, and this neighbor works for the leasing office of my apartment complex so if I complain I don't know if anything will even happen.

Ethics of Pet Ownership Friends dog bit her child

My friend messaged me this morning that their pitbull mix dog bit her 11 month old baby and they are going to have to get rid of it. It was really hard for me to stay supportive. She had to go to the hospital with the kid. Am I a horrible person for a part of me feeling like this was their own fault (the parents)? I will NEVER understand people who knowingly buy these killer breed dogs into their families with small kids. I mean, I don’t understand dog people in general but like, out of all the breeds in the world, why get the one that is specifically made for fighting? They have two very young kids. You read about these dogs attacking kids constantly on the news, I feel like you’re asking for something to happen if you still decide to buy one. I’m honestly baffled why pitbulls are so popular with parents, some lunatics even call them nanny dogs. What is the psychology behind that? I’m curious.

Vent / Rant Why do dog owners need to be treated like toddlers?

This is something I’ve recently started paying attention to as I find myself in different towns and cities often for work. We live in polite society, there’s expectations regarding what behaviors are acceptable and what behaviors are unacceptable. We already know what’s appropriate and inappropriate, nobody has to actively remind us. UNTIL you get to the dog owners. It seems every other house has a sign up saying “keep your dog off my grass” or “clean up after your dog” or “curb and leash your dog”. It’s a constant bombardment of reminders in just about every town I go to. Does nobody think it’s weird that we have to scold dog owners as if they’re elementary schoolers into having basic human decency? There’s no signs up that say “hey don’t kill people” or “don’t assault people”. You shouldn’t need CONSTANT reminding to not allow your creature to terrorize the neighborhood, that should just be expected. It’s really embarrassing how we’ve just accepted this as the norm.

Vent / Rant So how’s your day going?

Was at a friends house about an hour ago. He has an insanely untrained dog. I had brought some leftover pizza for us to eat, just because we couldn’t figure out what else to eat. So I warm it up, and set it on the table. I went to get some ranch, and then I hear “GET DOWN”. I look over. Can you guess what happened?

The damn dog at my entire fucking plate of food. The whole thing. Yeah. My whole afternoon meal, gone in a split fucking second.

I tried not to seem pissed off but I really was. I made an excuse to leave, and was resisting speeding home. Needless to say, I might not be going back there for a while. He didn’t tell me the dog would do that. I didn’t know the dog would do that. This whole ordeal is a fucking joke. Just what I needed.

Needless to say, I might not be returning anytime soon. Or ever.
