META Verified Email, Penis Man, and Making Friends in r/Phoenix

I wanted to give an update on a few subreddit items.

  • We are no longer requiring verified email addresses to post here. This was a feature that Reddit enabled to help combat trolls (who like to make new accounts to stir shit up). It worked well, but was catching too many regulars in the mix. We respect why people don't want Reddit to have their email addresses. So we've turned this requirement back off, but may enable it if we have a bad brigading situation like happens around elections.

  • Penis Man posts are NOT allowed in the subreddit. We were allowing them for a while but it's getting out of hand again. We had 5 in one day, and they seem to be on nice surfaces and even one historic building. The OG Penis Man wrote on dumpsters and other things as an act of resistance. This is different and smacks of people chasing clout. We're not going to give that any support. We will reevaluate this as we learn more about this new wave of Penis Men.

  • A reminder that we have an AZ Reddit Discord server with dozens of topic channels, loads of great users, and even regular meetups. It's a partner site with us and r/Arizona. I mention it because we've also had wave of people asking how to meet people and make friends. The server is a great place for that. It just is NOT a dating server, so if you go in there thirsty you will get bounced.

That is all. Have a great day, everyone.

Edit: yes there’s a r/penisman sub that’s been around for a long time

Ask Phoenix "Haboob" is an Arabic word, but did you know that so is "monsoon"?

Upvotes

"Haboob" was the second Arabic term Robert Ingram, an Arizona Scientist, introduced to describe Arizona weather. According to Ingram's son, also named Robert, the meteorologist introduced "monsoon" to the state, convincing Channel 12's then-weatherman, Frank Peddie, to incorporate it in forecasts in the 1950s."

Ask Phoenix Why Did I get An Answering Machine when Dialing 911 in Phoenix?

Last night I called 911 because the fire alarm was going off in my apt building. I first got an automated message saying to call the non emergency number if I'm not having an emergency and to stay on the line as these institutions would be repeated in Spanish. Then it asked me to either press 1 or 2 depending on what I needed. The entire message was over 1 minute in duration. After I made my selection instead of transferring me to a live person, the message just started over again. I then hung up and then a dispatcher immediately called me back. I couldn't help but think, had I had been being attacked I most certainly would have died while waiting for that message to finish. Why are we first getting an automated message when dialing an emergency number? It seems counterintuitive and dangerous.

Living Here How has rising rent or housing prices affected you in Phoenix?

How has the Phoenix housing market affected you?

If you're renting, how much are you paying and what does that get you in your part of town? Have you had to move, take on roommates, or change your living situation in other ways?

For homeowners, how have rising prices or interest rates changed your plans?

This is a focused chat on a Phoenix-related topic that comes up fairly often but maybe hasn’t had a single place to discuss.

We want this to be a discussion for locals/regulars, so comments from people who do not have a regular post history in this subreddit may be screened out. You can disagree with people on topics but personal attacks will not be tolerated. Report them to the Moderators and we will deal with it.

If you have ideas for other discussion topics, message the mods.

Ask Phoenix AC in Garage with Gas Water Heater

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hey all,

I want to install AC in m6 garage. I have a gas water heater and therefore have two vents in one of the walls. I believe this is to ensure combustion.

I know others have installed AC, what have you done about these? Just leave them open?

Plan would be a mini-split. Also in the plans is insulating the walls and ceiling.

Appreciate any insight

Things To Do Where can i take my incredibly active 1 year old?

Hello,

I'm ISO recommendations for affordable/free indoor play spaces. I have a very active wild-child 12 month old who runs jumps climbs and falls, just to get right back up and do it again. My house is all tile and becoming a hazard because she's literally trying to scale the furniture to the ceiling (we put mats down but she immediately tears them up and honestly won't to much for what she does anyways). We have a zoo membership but it's too fcking hot so it's not an option right now. I am at my wits end, lol. We are located around south tempe. Thanks in advance!

Politics Labor Day protest at the capitol building

This is a volunteer organized event running from 9-11 AM on September 1st. The goal of this rally is to 'demand a country that puts workers over billionaires'. If you have the day off and feel moved, come down and make your voice heard!

Full event details here

For anyone new to these sort of events, a quick list of guidelines for what you should do/bring.

-Bring lots and lots of water

-Shoes and clothing that will be comfortable with movement and heat

-An umbrella for shade is never a bad idea, or a small fan or ice packs

-Do not bring any weapons, even those that are legally permissable, as per request from event organizers

-Do not argue, yell at, or otherwise interact with counter-protestors or agitators

-Obey all lawful orders from law enforcement

-Do not block or impede traffic

-Chalk is a protected form of protest only so long as you draw or write on PUBLIC and not PRIVATE property

-Be aware that it is likely ICE may be near or at this event

-Police are not your friends. Be polite and follow directions, but as per the advice of many a lawyer do not talk to or volunteer to interact with them if possible

-Bring a sign! Be aware, for those with small children, profanity on signs is common

-You do not have to attend for the entirety of the event. Feel free to come and go as you please

Ask Phoenix I’m dumbfounded at what did this my cactus

The storm on Tuesday snapped a palo verde tree in our yard which then knocked over one of our cactuses. Landscapers came yesterday and cleared it up and reset the cactus. I went outside this morning and noticed it has since been knocked back down and a bunch of feathers on it? I’m stumped at what caused it to break in so many places and what the bird feathers had to do with it. Any ideas? I’m bummed our Ring didn’t catch it.

Ask Phoenix Big tree fell from my yard, into neighbors block wall and pergola. Insurance is slammed and slow and I'm wondering how this all works. Everything read online says I go through mine for my damages and neighbor goes through theirs for their damages? True or not?

Basically my question is in the subject. My tree fell into my neighbor's yard during Monday's storm and did some damage. Obviously, I feel bad about it and it was my tree. I'm waiting for my insurance to assign an adjuster and get back to me and meanwhile it's just...sitting there.

Everything I am reading online says that in these situations my insurance only covers my damages, and the neighbors would have to go through their insurance for their damages. There is nobody "responsible" because this is considered an "act of god".

This sounds odd, and I'm sure can vary state by state.

Until I can get clarity from my insurance, has anyone else experienced this in Arizona and know how insurance/law works here?

Guy ran a stop sign and smashed into me as I was driving down Indian School Road. Thankfully no injuries (besides burns on my hand from the airbag) and the other driver admitted fault and has full coverage. So, grateful for all that. But my poor truck is totaled. Welcome to Phoenix, me! haha

Looking for a lawyer

Have to be deposed as a witness next month in a civil suit regarding my time at an employer 7 years ago. I’m not in trouble personally, but given the seriousness of the case and the litigious nature of the people involved, I would like to find an attorney to at least do a sit down consultation to help me prepare. The nature of the case is civil, but has been tied into a bankruptcy case that one side has already filed, so friends suggested a either a civil lawyer or bankruptcy attorney might know the laws the best. Again, it’s just for deposition prep or possibly attending the deposition with me (though it heavily depends on cost). Any recommendations?

Ask Phoenix Looking for a local Vintage Hand Tool Dealer

Hi all,

I'm looking for some local dealers for Vintage Hand Tools. Over the past year, I've purchased a few old planes, chisels, and saws, and have been working on building up my wood working skills.

I'm ready to try and buy some nicer vintage tools, but I was hoping to find someone who could show me the ropes a little bit, and what to look for for user ready tools, not collector items.

I'm looking for a nice set of vintage chisels in particular, and some wood planes.

I know there's flea markets and antique stores, but they haven't really offered the conversation about tools I've been looking for.

Thanks!
