In Russia 1917 when the Tzar sent the army to open fire on starving citizens, the citizens did demonstrations like this where they basically told the soldiers 'you're just like us'. One of the things women did was walk up to soldiers about to open fire on them and hand them bread and roses as a representation of the need for food and human dignity. Eventually the soldiers realised they were on the wrong side and switched allegiance.
