The wonderful sight of my tax dollars doing nothing for me

Looking at another sub where they just mentioned that the national debt is now at a record 37 trillion so, I guess we have the extra money for nice things like this /s

1.9k

u/Logical-Selection979 11d ago

I saw a report that 25% of our total debt was accumulated under TACO

712

u/slowpoke2018 11d ago

Wasn't just Taco's first term? Does that count the extra $4T he just added?

399

u/sarabeara12345678910 11d ago

Pretty sure it was just the first term.

49

u/etharper 11d ago

I read a report somewhere that apparently all the tariff money coming in is going into a system that doesn't seem to have checks and balances. No one seems to know where it's going.

I just read that 40% of his wealth has been obtained since Jan. 20, so that checks out!

244

u/Clarkelthekat 11d ago

Which is basically 100% when you consider he was up to his eyeballs in debt before winning the presidency.

So he basically just amassed a new wealth as president on the Backs of every American.

48

u/ihvnnm 11d ago

Hey now, a lot of that money is foreign. What better way to make money, collect as much foreign currency while cheap, kill the American dollar, and bam, his valuation shoots up even more.

78

u/GoneFishing4Chicks 11d ago

Why are the words BRIBE and CORRUPTION just gone from American vernacular?? That's not "foreign money", those are BRIBES by FOREIGN NATIONS.

Republicans Always Always raise the debt. They cut off taxes to rich and spend like no tomorrow.

319

u/Bombtek504 11d ago

It’s honestly diabolically genius. Blow money with no regard for future impact, accomplish what they want. By the time the bill becomes apparent it’s usually a Democratic POTUS. Then they blame them for the deficit and run on cutting it. Democrat spends the whole term fixing it and making progress but it’s not enough. Republican wins next election, rinse wash repeat.

249

u/Thefrayedends 11d ago

It's called cunning, it is a different kind of intelligence. It's not difficult to think of the concept of screwing people over, it just requires you not to care about the harm caused. For many, the harm caused is part of the payoff.

The right relies on visceral cunning, while the centrists rely on pragmatic intellectualism (often to the point of arrogance). The left relies on empathy and common cause.

Yeah it's crazy. When I was younger my parents used to talk about tax and spend (Democrats). Now that I'm older I realize that Republicans are borrow and Spend.

DOGE was a joke as expected. One person's waste is another person's entitlement. That's why I think it's hilarious that he's bragging about all of these tariff dollars. Congrats your taxes on Americans raised 2% of the federal expenditures. So much winning.

17

u/Linkbowler 11d ago

Never understood that criticism. Tax and spend is the exact order it's supposed to happen.

7

u/gsfgf 11d ago

It's literally the purpose of the government. Levy taxes and spend that money.

Isn't everyday like a new record high of the national debt since like Clinton

142

u/mitrie 11d ago

Hey now, don't exaggerate. Dubya had finished out Q2 of 2001 with the debt declining before getting tax cuts through that erased the surplus and put us solidly into a deficit.

53

u/Some_Ride1014 11d ago

Clinton left dubya with a surplus

36

u/mitrie 11d ago edited 11d ago

That's the joke. Dubya had a surplus until he got his tax cuts passed. In the intervening time period the debt was falling, i.e. not record highs.

These tax dollars are making things worse, and nobody who lives in DC asked for it because we all knew it was entirely unnecessary and just political theater.

89

u/Simba7 11d ago

But people who don't live there told me it's a hell-hole of rampant crime and everyone saying it isn't is lying or delusional!?

Who do I believe, residents of a place, or people who profit off selling fear? I think it's obvious I go with the fear people. Ya know, just in case.

33

u/GhostofAllDays 11d ago

I've seen countless reels of DC at the moment and you'd think it was a former war-zone by the comments. Lots of "Nice to see the streets finally clean!" and "I feel so safe walking around now!" from people who haven't been and live nowhere near the district. Their little echo chamber spreads fast.

26

u/cubitoaequet 11d ago

It's also weird how they generalize what is usually pretty localized crime to an entire metro area. People will take the worst block in Seattle and act like the entire city is like that and not actually mostly nice, safe, super boring neighborhoods full of regular families.

21

u/biosc1 11d ago

Same way they took the protests in LA and extrapolated it to the entire city. These folks are from such small towns, they can't imagine a city being bigger than a couple of blocks.

I ride my bike through the National Mall several times a week. The most dangerous thing you'll find there is a someone getting a little too eager during a game of flag football.

These Guard troops are going to be incredibly bored out there.

438

u/Orange_Kid 11d ago

That's not true, if it hasn't rained in a couple days the dust from the walking paths can really sting the eyes.

174

u/DoctorDinghus 11d ago

Oh goddammit are you now suggesting we need to bring in the army?

88

u/Orange_Kid 11d ago

Nothing silly like that, I'd just suggest we arm the national guardsmen with standard issue watering cans.

28

u/AlexandraFromHere 11d ago

Sounds like a beautification and morale task. Water the ground. Paint some rocks. If they're still deployed when it snows, they can spray paint snow white so no one has to see that icky street grime color.

Thing is, we normally reserved those tasks for people who messed up and needed some help to be productive Airmen. These soldiers are being paid to intimidate an old man's fears and make weak-minded politicians feel like they're projecting strength.

They complain about cities they have never been to; seemingly “justified” to them because they saw it on newsmax. Yet testimony from people who live there doesn’t hold any weight.

They're just these out of shape dudes pacing around tourist areas in the middle of the day. That isn't where crime is, that isn't the time crime happens, and those aren't the people to stop it. A drunk dude threw a sandwich at one of them and ran away in loafers and it took multiple feds half a block to catch him. They aren't sending their best.

I live here. Crime is lower than it has been and what we need is our cops, who sit in the bike lane playing on their phones and posting here, to do anything, not a bunch of feds trained to deal with drugs and gun rings and human trafficking to stand around tourist stops and check traffic. We already have more police per capita than any American city, more than NYC which is the largest police force in the country.

100

u/spunkychickpea 11d ago

Not to disagree with you or anything, but I think the real issue is that the average American has zero critical thinking skills. These people see themselves as rugged individualists, and as one might expect, all of their concerns rest entirely on what happens to them directly. They’re not on the lookout for societal changes that could indirectly affect them, like poverty, food shortages, healthcare rationing, or crumbling infrastructure.

That said, there will likely be a very rude awakening for some of these people in the near future when Dear Leader orders the confiscation of privately held arms. At that point, the state’s wrath will be turned inward and it will be too late for these “rugged” individuals to change their ways and properly organize a resistance effort.

47

u/MisterB78 11d ago

Almost everyone is susceptible to misinformation. Hear a lie enough times and you believe it’s true.

There’s been a decades long misinformation campaign run against the conservatives in this country (who are often less educated, less diverse, and therefore easier to influence)

18

u/Ok-Function1920 11d ago edited 8d ago

Yep, conservatives have had a propaganda machine installed for 30+ years, or whenever Fox News was conceived- now they have Newsmax and One America as well, and soon to be others… word is that CBS will be converted into yet another conservative propaganda machine which is why it is currently capitulating to Trump and his regime

→ More replies (2)

55

u/TuringC0mplete 11d ago

They’re also too short sighted to realize that all of this is going to impact them. All of the “it’ll never happen to me” keeps falling on more and more people. You saw it a lot with the flooding in Texas. There was one woman in particular who posted videos shitting on people in California during the wildfires and praising them not getting assistance just to then beg for it when her house was destroyed in the floods. They just don’t get it. Until something happens to them, they won’t realize.

37

u/Beatleboy62 11d ago

For me it's all the guys saying in the event of true conflict they'd go "off the grid and wait for it to blow over"

Which sounds great until you're suddenly in the same spot as 50 guys in your area who had the same idea and now competing for resources. It only takes one heated conflict to turn violent and now being on your own in the wilderness doesn't sound that great.

They are the only people who exist in their bubbles.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/DeterrenceTheory 11d ago

You're right. I think this is a fascinating topic. The rugged individualist mindset is a foundational element of the division that is behind a lot of the problems in US.

A quick example: consider the idea of "living off the grid." It's well-known concept. But does it actually exist in the US? No, it's a fake concept here. You can't live off the grid anywhere in the US. Sure, you can live far away from others, but the only reason you can do that without, for example, behind invaded by warlords for your resources is because of our strong social systems.

We've convinced people that they can be rugged individualists, but they are ultimately dependent on the government. It's dangerous, because they end up voting against their own interests without realizing it.

It's actually a little deeper than that. August 15th is the date Trump admin must legally release the Epstein files due to the law Democrats invoked on July 29. Trump is planning to not release those files and is preparing for the backlash.

6

What backlash would you expect exactly? Something similar to the backlash that occurred when he was found guilty of rape? Or became a convicted felon? Or stole, and refused to return, boxes of highly classified documents? They will ignore the date and exactly nothing will happen.

Deployed on the Mall? For what? Are they afraid someone may walk on freshly-planted grass or something?

114

u/FreshBert 11d ago edited 11d ago

Probably so that they can get lots of professional photos taken of guardsmen near national monuments to put in Trump's one-page daily brief and tell him his harebrained scheme is actually doing something.

Trump is working on normalizing the military occupation of American cities. To do that the deployments have to be as public as possible, which means the national mall.

Why do you suppose Trump would be willing to spend a ton of money and political capital on normalizing the military occupation of American cities?

crackdown on what?

71

u/pickleparty16 11d ago

Trump basically just loves power. He loves the thrill of giving an order and thousands of people getting into motion because of it. Guys with guns standing around, military vehicles rolling down the streets. He can sit in bed and watch it all unfold on TV because he said to do it.

Thats really it.

u/senator_corleone3 11d ago

💯 percent for show. The National Mall is already very secure.

My condolences to the National Guard stuck in Washington DC in August.

Hot, sweaty, and pointless...

All to promote a wannabe dictator...

104

u/Dreadmaker 11d ago

You shouldn’t call him a wannabe dictator.

He is a literal dictator who is successfully implementing fascism with exactly no boundaries. There is no democratic process to any of the things he’s been implementing. You have a dictator.

And from on scene reports online. They’re just standing around as DC is in a 30 year crime rate drop.

This was never about crime, it was about prepping to keep from being removed from office in 1-3 years.

As someone who served in the National Guard, I can tell you those folks won’t stand in the way when things go south. They care more about their own families than propping up some wannabe dictator.

This is such a low point for the US. I hope everyone can see that and understands it. When a nation's citizens have to fear its military, its pretty much the worst situation.

23

u/niberungvalesti 11d ago

All this because the electorate chose fear and hatred over qualified leadership. We got more warnings than most countries that this Trump2 Presidency would be exactly what it is turning out to be: an exercise in dictatorship.

I visited our nation’s capital during Trump’s first term as the wife and I were on a big history kick. We did all the museums and monuments we could. I was surprised to find how peaceful the area was in spite of the crowds.

I can’t imagine having that same peaceful atmosphere with military personnel standing guard like the city was under an occupying force.

12

u/edoreinn 11d ago

The city is under an occupying force.

18

u/Sonikku_a 11d ago edited 11d ago

They are trying to normalize federal troops acting as police in our cities, and it is absolutely disgusting.

“Don’t tread on me”? Please. If Obama or Biden had deployed the National Guard and taken over the police in Houston or Tallahassee or whatever the Republicans would have lost their damned minds—and rightly so.

National Guard troops began deploying in Washington, D.C., yesterday, with some joining city police last night. The full contingent of 800 troops is expected to be operational by the end of the week.

Mayor Muriel Bowser, along with the district’s police chief, met yesterday with Attorney General Pam Bondi and said she will make the most of federal help that she says she’s powerless to refuse.

You KNOW this isn't for crime or safety in ANY way whatsoever by this picture.

The area around the monuments is absolutely, perfectly safe, 24 hours a day. I have been there plenty of times at all hours, and it's just fine.

DC does have some tougher areas like any city... but this is NOT one of them. There is zero reason to have the national guard right there.
