I went through the mental institution this is at; Brattleboro retreat. They let the well behaved mostly stable patients come on a group hike up the mountain to visit this tower. I remember I was very out of shape at that point in my life, but we made it up to the top and I have stood right at the bottom of this tower, panting from trying not to trigger an asthma attack and sweating buckets. It was still really cool. They used mental patients’ labor back in the 1800s to erect the structure.
