It is absolutely insane for a company as large as Sony to not only allow its product to be non-operational for 14+ hours, but on top of that to completely disregard its customers to the point of offering ZERO information on any of this. No excuse for that.

I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that I’m going to remember this when it comes time to buy my next console

It's annoying, but I get it, regardless of what they say they'll get bombarded with harassment, heck they could make a tweet saying it'll be back in 5 minutes and then they'll still got unholy levels of hatred and harassment.

I hear you, but if they cared about their customers they would want to proactively provide updates regardless of the response they get, because that’s how you salvage some modicum of customer experience in times like this. Radio silence is simply unacceptable for any serious business.

I think the only time where it would really warrant a quick response would be if they were hacked somehow, I mean if its just some greasy DDoS basement dwelling goblin then there's no point till its dealt with as frankly the other goblin clans that can't deal with no multiplayer after 5 minutes would descend on Sony like rabbid werewolves.

Last year there was a major hack on some of the copay assistance companies (the ones that help people cover the cost of their medications they can't afford). Their systems were down for a month. Not sure how they got it back up and running, but scuttlebutt was that they had to pay to get their servers back up. If a massive company like that can get took out, it's not surprising that playstation isn't immune.
