Support Will having my cat on the playstation damage it?

Feb 14 '25
loose hair would be the biggest issue as the fans could just suck them but i dunno seems good, nice warm bed lmao

note: be careful with vaccums and electronics like consoles and computers. i've heard many a tale of static charges killing them

Will it hurt the cat? No.
Will it hurt the PS5? Yes, if you don't clean it very often.

u/No_Drummer_4395 Feb 14 '25
You're probably getting a lot of cat hair inside your ps5 which will eventually be an issue.

u/Charleaux330 Feb 14 '25
His body is an insulator trapping heat. Will make the console hotter than normal. Basically hes like a thick blanket on top of it. Also if he has claws - claw marks.

u/Mediocre-Poem-9097 Feb 14 '25
People debunking this is so odd. My cat has done this a few times already and I thought to leave her be. Shortly after, it would give me an alert my PS was too hot and to shut it off.
I know they love warmth, but don’t let your cat snooze there. Plus the hair will eventually build up too.

u/LeFiery Feb 15 '25
I did not spend $500 for a cat bed I don't even know how or why this issue ever comes up.
Pets and electronics do not mix, the electronics will not survive.

Basically hes like a thick blanket on top of it
Only small parts, and none of kitty is covering intake our outtake vents.
The additional heat here is negligible and would be more than represented by someone running their PS5 in a hot room.
The tolerances here are absolutely fine. OP can have kitty there.
EDIT: LOL, these things are true no matter how many downvotes without a reason I get.

The additional heat here is negligible
This is not only true, but Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry did a heat torture test back when PS5 launched. He shut his console inside a tiny entertainment center drawer with zero airflow and loaded up a scene in a game that forced the PS5 to run at its peak power output and maximum temperature.
He left it in there for hours just to see what happened and it never shut off, never gave an overheating warning, and performed like normal after the torture test was finished. That same console is still in use and sitting on his desk today.

u/BillyTenderness Feb 14 '25
Yeah there's a lot of "your PS5 should be six feet from any other object" stuff on here, and sure, that will indeed keep it from overheating. But in terms of the actual thermals of the thing, the console takes in air from between the "fins" and spits hot air out the back. If it relied on the top surface for heat dissipation, it would have vents and/or not be made out of plastic.
The cat here isn't going to interfere with airflow, except to the extent that hair might make its way into some of the intake vents.
2
u/gmacman Feb 14 '25
Very true. It's fine. The cat and PS5 will be fine. Clean out the fans from time to time, regardless of how many cats are enjoying the nice warm spot.
2
u/Whitezilla_Diesel Feb 14 '25
Love the fact you put ‘if’ he has claws!! I’ve been pmsl picturing cats with trotters, hooves, feet like a duck, like a elephant, best one velociraptor which is a terrifying combo but would look hilarious with a giant raptor claw on each paw 🤣🤣

Id be more concerned about HAIR - you might wanna clean it more than usually to be sure it wont overheat

u/bigben56 bigben72000 Feb 14 '25
My friends cat used to do this. It was fine up until she randomly pissed on it.

My old cat loved to sleep on my Wii. Something about a slab of warm, gently humming plastic.

I've heard this technique increases your agility and reflexes. Also increases your download speed 10 fold
5
u/Careful-Addition776 Feb 14 '25
Nah. Leaving cats on top of your ps actually adds more storage and frame rate possibilities.

7
u/A5D5TRYR Feb 14 '25
You're hurting the cat's self-discipline by letting it do whatever it wants.
But yes, hair will be more likely to get in the system and could cause it to overheat over time.
3
u/CastTheFirstStone_ PS5 Feb 14 '25
You'll need to clean the fans often, but as long as you do that it should be fine

Odds of that cat being comfy 100%
Odds that you’ll need to clean out cat hair or face overheating issues 100%
But it’s the cat’s house so you’ll probably just have to deal with it.

u/Top_Popsicle Feb 14 '25
Yes more cat hair is being sucked into the console. Just clean it every 6 months or so then if it’s a reg thing

Why are people so cool with letting their pets do whatever the fuck they want when they have an entire house to do shit in?
5
u/Tvelt17 Feb 14 '25
Just make sure you clean the cat hair out of the PS5 frequently. Weight of cat on the PS5 shouldn't damage it.
4
u/streetxrat94 [Lies of P Overture] Feb 14 '25
If you groom them often, it might not get too bad…maybe.

Yes, since loose hair is a bad shit to have in your PS5, also please don't let your cat steal the PS5's pieces of microprocessor...
2
u/FishtownReader Feb 14 '25
My cat has slept on my PS5 a bunch since I got it… never had an issue. Even when I cleaned it… nothing of concern.
2
u/Pretty_Astronomer890 Feb 14 '25
No but if he/she does it often then you will have to clean the fans. Btw wich breed/race (idk the correct word) is your cat

Your ps5 is going to so warm and fuzzy on the inside before long lol
2
u/Discobastard PS5 Feb 14 '25
Do you think Sony tested the PS5 for heat disipation with a "cat on PS5" scenario? 😁
2
u/Active-Animal-411 Feb 14 '25
You will definitely want to make sure you take it apart and clean it regularly. My lil buddy Rascal loved the hum and warmth of the PS5 and I didn’t think much of it but the hair clogs quickly. I love my tuxedo to death but he’s been banned from my PS5 lol

I ran into this with my cats. I ended up putting aluminum foil on top of the PlayStation. They hated stepping on it. I eventually was able to remove the foil and the cats still don’t get on my PlayStation.

No but if the PlayStation starts running slow or u can hear the fans I’d clean it probably have cat hair in it
2
u/ViperKira Feb 14 '25
My cats love my PS5, they also loved my PS4 Pro that handled them like a champ for something like 8 years.
Keep the airflow clean and it'll be fine.
2
u/DismalFinger Feb 14 '25
Fir will definitely get inside. I just had to disassemble one of my controllers with stick drift and there was even cat hair inside it. Filthy

Cat may have seizures. This cat uses an automated save feature. Do not power off or unplug while cat is staring into the middle distance.
2
u/PumpkinHead12YT1 Feb 14 '25
Just means your cat is watching the heat…if they jump away though probably time to turn it off

2
u/iamearlsweatshirt Feb 14 '25
Hair getting inside is a mild problem but easily fixed by cleaning it every once in a while. In my experience, the bigger problem is if they accidentally knock it over 🥹 (or unplug it, but that’s less of a big deal)

Maybe, there'll be lots of cat hair that can get on the PS and it would be applying some pressure onto it while it is on top of it, but nothing that I would assume does any major damage to it or even the cat if the PS begins to get a little hot while playing. I would say this is not recommended, both for the cat and the PS, but the cat looks like its vibin and I'm sure that you can take clean the PS and take care of both of them well enough to not have any issues with either. I wonder if the cat has a favorite game to watch you play.

u/Bossraider Feb 15 '25
the kitty on top of the PS5 actually gives it +100 horsepower, making the PS5 stronger than most high end PCs

as long as they're not impeding any vents for air circulation, you should be fine.

Why do people let pets on electronics, say the cat jumps on or off it? Not just laying on it, which is Gross by the way.
9
u/basedgod001 Feb 14 '25
Agree with first section. Hard disagree with second section. In fact, I’d posit that you’re gross. Yeah, How’s it feel?

My long hair cat literally stands directly behind the fan to take that sweet heat to the face. I open my plates up semi regularly and have yet to see or deal with any real issues.
2
u/Yeetus_The_Fetuses Feb 14 '25
My cat does the same thing..I don't mind since whenever I open my console up to maintain it it's not full of hair like I expected. I don't let her sit on my consoles anymore though. Shes fat due to her diet food since she's allergic to everything else and I've heard my PS4 plastic make a crackling noise when she sits on it lol.

Honestly it might help, as long as the cat doesn't shed too much.
The reason I say it might help is because the cat *might* absorb some of the heat from the PS5. Not sure though

My cat likes to sleep on mine. The only time I got an overheat warning was when he covered the vents with his belly. Otherwise the PlayStation (and the cat) are fine.

Mine would do this, PS5 started randomly turning off, I assumed it was over heating, I cleaned it out n it was full of cat hair.
1
u/midge314 Feb 15 '25
Maybe try getting a heated cat bed for the little cutie. Or a second ps5 designated for the cat.

u/CowFucker83 Feb 15 '25
Would recommend just getting them a heating pad or something. They make some specifically for cats.

u/linalool23 Feb 15 '25
I wouldn't do it but this kind of hair doesn't look like a terrible shedder. It's definitely going to or has the potential to such hairs in w dust. If your place is dusty too well clean it. My PS5 barley needs to be cleaned but I get dust out but nothing like some of these nasty people. Your place looks nice so you are probably fine and they seem comfortable so go w it.
1
u/Dj1999s Feb 15 '25
Cat hair will be a problem. Just make sure u do a normal cleaning. I have my standing up, and my cat loves the heat it puts off.

u/DefinitionOwn8597 Feb 15 '25
The hair is the only thing i would he concerned about. At my gf house she has two of them though so that might make the difference but when i opened up the ps4 was full of dust & hair
1
u/Alive-Tell-2309 Feb 15 '25
Just make sure to clean it every month Atleast so it doesn’t start overheating

Their hair can fall inside the ventilation system and make it very dirty with time.

u/No-Series62 Feb 16 '25
Check the PlayStation's serial number, from there with a little research you can understand if it is allergic or not at cats
