I think it will be free on ps plus eventually , therefore I’m not buying it

17

u/Dreadnaught_IPA 2d ago

I'm thinking it will be by the end of the year

4

u/Mecha-Oddzilla 2d ago

What it has over GoY is the co-op but it will probably lose in every other aspect.

3

u/e_xotics 2d ago

It’s 100% going on Extra, Sony puts all their first party games on it for the most part.

Especially this one because it is a 7/10 and didn’t sell amazingly, so they want the audience to be as wide as possible for it.

1

u/lawlliets 2d ago

Do you think on essential or extra? :0

1

u/MaxIglesias 2d ago

That's why I'm hesitant to buy.

1

u/MargoPeacefulSpirit4 2d ago

Honestly thats the gamble though, waiting for PS Plus could mean missing out for months while everyone else is already playing. Sometimes its worth just grabbing it early if youre hyped enough.

62

u/KuntaWuKnicks 2d ago

I found it a little boring

The story did absolutely nothing for me. The combat was ok

28

u/Asimb0mb 2d ago

Same. It's the most 7/10 game you'll ever play.

10

u/whitestguyuknow 2d ago

I fell off of it. It was really meh imo. So yeah, totally agree.

Problem is I even knew it would be before I bought it. I just bought it cause there was nothing out at the time and was bored. Bought it and it fulfilled my exact expectations...

2

u/Asimb0mb 2d ago

Honestly I bought it at launch despite being underwhelmed by the trailers, because I trusted Team Ninja. Their trailers are pretty terrible, but the Nioh games are huge favorites of mine (Nioh 2 is my game of the PS4 generation and Nioh 3 is so damn exciting). I even liked their less celebrated recent games (Wo Long and Stranger of Paradise). I figured an open world Team Ninja game would be like their Elden Ring moment or something, but it definitely wasn't that at all. Such a shame.

3

u/DiilVulom 2d ago

If the game was "ok" wouldn't that be a 5/10? I always thought a 7/10 for games would be considered a good game and not mid.

2

u/Asimb0mb 2d ago

5/10 is a bad game in my book. Rise of the Ronin is arguably a well made game, it just doesn't do anything special.

1

u/Namath96 2d ago

Was about to say, that sounds like a fake ign 7/10 lol

1

u/BaldingThor 2d ago

And that’s ok. Not every game has to be or can be a 10/10

1

u/Asimb0mb 1d ago

I agree, but a $70 price point creates a certain level of expectation.

9

u/eurekabach 2d ago

What? Combat in this game is amazing! It’s like sekiro mixed with bloodborne (you can parry enemies with gun shots) mixed with Ninja Gaiden.

7

u/MISTERTURKY [Trophy Level 400-499] 2d ago

Same here. I played the free trial version, and at the end (of the trial) was like "meh, i'll pass"

4

u/TATER_SALAD_HOOVER 2d ago

It’s just a watered down Ghost of Tsushima.

1

u/Elden_Born 2d ago

Combat & Gameplay & The World was amazing, story was good.

51

u/Constant-Figure9868 PS5 2d ago

Played the demo, wasn't really impressed. Ghost of Tsushima is still the best samurai game ever made, imo.

23

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Well that’s the thing, it’s not based on samurai’s. The only thing that GOT and this have in common is that they’re both in Japan and there are katanas. Idk how much weaponry the demo allowed you to use, but in the full game there’s so many different types of weapons and once you get the mechanics it can get addicting. The Story in GOT is far superior tho.

If people go into this game expecting a GoT clone they will be disappointed

6

u/Constant-Figure9868 PS5 2d ago

It let me play through the entirety of Act 1 so whatever weapons you can get up to that point, I guess. I don't think it was bad, it just didn't appeal to me. I wouldn't say I was looking for a GoT clone. But a bit more of a grounded experience.

5

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Nah yeah I respect that, it’s not for everyone

1

u/qaasq 2d ago

Are there bows/ranged weaponry?

4

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Yes

Short bows

Long bows

Revolvers/pistols

Musket riffles

1

u/JackiePriest 2d ago

Not sure why but I was really obsessed with the game for a few months when it launched. I wish it had been more polished but it was still really fun to play.

5

u/Recover20 PS5 2d ago

Really enjoyable game but unfortunately less than the sum of it's parts.

It's unfortunately Team Ninjas weakest game but I still had fun playing it.

All team ninja games unfortunately get compared to Nioh 2.

But I've enjoyed all of there games.

Ninja Gaiden

Ninja Gaiden 2

Ninja Gaiden 3

Nioh

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

Nioh 2

And now we have Nioh 3 around the corner.

Team Ninjas games are so of the most fun I can have in games, they seem perfectly designed for my tastes.

I'm dubious but excited about Nioh 3's open world approach but also I'd love a sequel to Wo Long.

3

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

I feel that

Stranger of Paradise was a nice surprise for me

I was sold on Nioh 3 with the demo

2

u/Recover20 PS5 2d ago

I enjoyed SoP so much that I bought the PS4 version and platinumed that as well. Supremely underrated game due to the memes. But the gameplay and combat is top tier

2

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Agreed. At first I was like TN & SE making a game? Nah it’s gonna flop. Bought and holy fk it was so much better I thought it was gonna be

2

u/Recover20 PS5 2d ago

To be fair if you're going to get anyone to do an action RPG. Team Ninja are the No.1 choice. Genius in retrospect

2

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Absolutely

Long ago I would’ve given that title to Capcom, but TN are the go to now

3

u/ShogunDreams PS5 2d ago

I want them to make another Stranger of Paradise. I was hooked on that. Wo long was a joy to play. Not to hard and not too easy either a perfect balance for my taste.

3

u/Recover20 PS5 2d ago

Absolutely I would love a sequel to any of their titles to be honest. They're just pure fun.

You're right with Wo Long. That game was perfectly balanced. (Aside one or two DLC bosses that is)

18

u/donodoco1029 2d ago

Definitely an underrated game. Shame it got drowned out by other games that came out during that year, but was absolutely fun to play.

8

u/Skankhunt966 2d ago

I just platinumed it.

In all my years in gaming this is the one game that it pisses you off how great it could be.

Its not bad by any means at all. It is full of awesome ideas. But all those ideas are unpolished and incomplete.

Example. I am killing enemies left and right and engaged in battle with few at a base, however, other enemies are not reacting and going by their business because i didnt cross their field of view. Also, when i am noticed, and walk out the boarder of the camp, they reset as if nothing happens.

Another issue is that nothing is structured in the enviroment to make sense. I arrive in a new area, and try to reach a cat to collect, and there are twice enemies setting there jist for the sake of having enemies. No rhyme or reason for why are they hostile.

The bond system is great but aside from just getting dialogue or be able to have an extra mission, nothing is unique. It felt unfinished.

NPCs are robotic and dont react to situations well, example i finished a mission with one and we were happy and he was thankful. Then immediatly after he became angry after the mission because i have higher bond with anti shogun.

Photo missions are pointless and doesnt have any meaning or unique aspects to them, why not make pictures of real life locations come out as real pictures of that era while giving us some lore and history? Instead of this screenshot useless extra collectoables.

The countless loots that 99.9999 are useless and have no value. Horse customization that has no value. Lie/persuade options that do nothing...

It feels (and in my head it is) that they spent too long developing the game, and they saw GoT comes out and other games that made TN say, ok we need to push this out now...

If an extra year was spent to polish all those quirks it would've been amazing...

0

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Agreed. Hopefully TN attempt another game like this in the future

50

u/woahitsshant 2d ago

I can’t think of a recent game that’s been the epitome of mid more so than Rise of the Ronin.

12

u/WaylandThurston [Game you're currently playing] 2d ago

Black myth wukong

6

u/ThreeTreesForTheePls 2d ago

Eh at least Wukong was visually polished.

Ronin had the texture quality and fidelity of a true FROM game, with none of the art design to hide it.

2

u/WaylandThurston [Game you're currently playing] 2d ago

I agree, It was visually polished yeah but it was still a very standard third person action game.

7

u/LinkedInParkPremium 2d ago

A game just to be a game. Zero inspiration.

3

u/woahitsshant 2d ago

the combat was the only half decent thing, and that was a watered down version of Nioh and Wo Lang.

2

u/PatrenzoK 2d ago

Haven't played it but dragon age and AC shadows were def setting out to see who could be more mid

2

u/Michael_braham 2d ago

Is it like ‘days gone’ mid? ‘Doom the dark ages’ mid? (I loved doom eternal and dark ages is just to slow and loose for me)

6

u/eurekabach 2d ago

Forget what people are saying. Ronin’s gameplay is top notch. Everything else is indeed kinda poor, but not the combat.

1

u/Michael_braham 2d ago

Meh lots of choices for great gameplay, I need a little more than that. I’ll put it on the on sale list

1

u/indie_mcemopants 2d ago

I'm honestly not sure why some people are disappointed in this game. I legitimately loved it, it might even be somewhere in my all-time top 10. The story is kind of forgettable, but the combat, customization, side quests, and cat petting were all a blast.

0

u/Michael_braham 2d ago

Is it maybe because GoT was so good??

1

u/indie_mcemopants 2d ago

Oh yeah, I have no doubt it's directly compared in most people's minds. And that's fair, they're obviously thematically similar. I liked GoT quite a bit too, but I feel like the combat and customization was much better in RoR. I would highly recommend both, though maybe not back to back.

2

u/Michael_braham 2d ago

It will be a good Black Friday pick up

-6

u/obelix_dogmatix 2d ago

Ronin and Ghost both fit the bill for me. Ghost ran the visual and combat hype train all the way to hype glory.

12

u/ParadoxNowish 2d ago edited 2d ago

Nah bro, Ghost is about the furthest thing from mid one can imagine. Was it revolutionary? No. Did it completely elevate its genre? No. But it was a damn excellent open world action-adventure game with a lot of refinement and terrific worldbuilding & story.

2

u/Scary_Adhesiveness_6 2d ago

Yeah I freaking loved ghost

-2

u/shadowglint 2d ago

It's Far Cry: Japan. If Ubisoft was the publisher it wouldn't get half the ball glazing it does.

0

u/ParadoxNowish 2d ago

Like I said, it follows the traditional open world action-adventure template, but executed at a far higher degree of quality than anything Ubisoft has done in years.

1

u/obelix_dogmatix 2d ago

BS … Odyssey and Origins are much better than Ghost. Like the other person said, had Ghost been released by Ubisoft, it would have been trashed. The open world is a massive chore. Every side quest is literally “kill the Mongols”. Skill upgrades are hidden behind meaningless activities. “Mongols are invading but let me chase this fox”. The world doesn’t react to you at all. In 2020s, to have a wooden and monotonous open world like that of Ghost should be criminal, but playstation fanatics rode that train and made sure it succeeded.

0

u/ParadoxNowish 2d ago

This is so laughably false, I'm not even going to dignify it with an actual response 😂

1

u/obelix_dogmatix 2d ago

lol … yet you felt the need to comment

2

u/ParadoxNowish 2d ago

As is my prerogative 😘

-2

u/PrinceKarmaa 2d ago

only redeeming quality from ghost was the combat, story was complete mid and boring such a slog to get thru

1

u/ParadoxNowish 2d ago edited 2d ago

Hard disagree. Main story was like a badass Batman origin story set in feudal Japan. With real moral conflict for the protagonist as he chooses to abandon the honor of his tradition to level the playing field with the Mongols and repel their invasion. Lots of great character centric side stories too, albeit with a few smaller side missions of lesser quality here and there. All of them nevertheless reinforce the central theme of your growing legend as the Ghost.

0

u/obelix_dogmatix 2d ago

lol … 0 moral conflict whatsoever. He started sneaking around the first chance he got.

2

u/ParadoxNowish 2d ago

It's like you didn't even play the game 🤔

Anyone who has finished it knows there is a moral arc that plays out, and his first compromise to his moral code by killing from the shadows is merely the first step of that journey.

-12

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

For me that game was KCD2. Boring af

7

u/TarsigeroftheBush 2d ago

Damn I really liked it too, didn't know it was so disliked on this sub lol

4

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Ah who cares what they say. It was good!

3

u/tway2533 2d ago

The story was really frustrating but I think overall it was actually a really good game

1

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

100% agree

6

u/Any-Contract-9152 2d ago

People keep comparing to Tsushima like it’s the first samurai game in existence. It has better story but the combat is nowhere near as deep as rise of the ronin and Tsushima is way too easy.

2

u/Darkblade887 [Trophy Level 300-399] 2d ago

I played like 80 hours of it. I mostly walked/rode/glided everywhere so by the time I got to Act 3 I was burned out

2

u/zenexo 2d ago

Oh snap. I forgot I actually bought this game. I still have it sealed somewhere. It will be my next game.

2

u/MrLightning-Bolt 2d ago

I see a DD2 and rebirth in that screen. That deserves a thumbs up.👍

2

u/J0HN__L0CKE 2d ago

Agreed, I loved it. The way movement/traversal felt made everything feel smooth and not like a chore, which these open world checkbox games quickly become to me. Add on to that solid, well done combat and it made for very enjoyable experience.

2

u/EmptyCupOfWater 2d ago

I liked the game up until I got to the cat rental service management sim. Then I absolutely loved it

3

u/Same_Acanthisitta_38 2d ago

Anyone comparing this game to GoT or saying that the combat is anyhting other than a masterclass of sword to sword combat has barely scratched the surface of what the combat of this game has to offer.

Underappreciated gem that's just little too linear/open-worldy to be embraced by the soulslike community , just a little less polished narratively & visually to be overlooked by Ghost of Tsushima fans & just a a Little too grounded to be embraced by the CAG community.

Yet what good it does it does IMO perfectly , and that's Sekiro x Ninja Gaiden in open world 1850 japan.

Here's a glimpse of advanced combat for anyone interested : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35-Utv7ytkg

3

u/Physical-Midnight994 2d ago

I think ghost of Tsushima spoiled me, I can’t play any new Japanese sword fighting game without think the entire time “but it’s not as good sigh

1

u/nicky94 2d ago

GOT was so freaking good.

Heard people online say its repetitive and the open world is boring etc etc so I put off playing it for years.

..but boy were they wrong! such a good game and yeah the bar has most certainly been set for samurai games.

1

u/DanishTrash_ 2d ago

That person would be me, couldn’t get through it. Really didn’t like it actually.

It was absolutely gorgeous tho.

1

u/unfortunatelyypurdog 2d ago

and it’s crazy that ghost of yotei will probably be better than GOT also

1

u/beebun17 2d ago

Not even Sekiro?

1

u/Physical-Midnight994 2d ago

Sekiro is on my list after I finish lies of p

1

u/Obvious_Conflict_ 2d ago

Please play shadows

1

u/Physical-Midnight994 2d ago

Planning on it, thought it looked really good

1

u/SlyCooper007 2d ago

So that’s what his background is lol I’ve had this background on my PlayStation for a while now and I had no idea what game it was from. I just like the way it looks compared to the other ones.

1

u/shoke73 2d ago

I bought it at the launch, played 10 min . Will give it another go

1

u/ShogunDreams PS5 2d ago

The gameplay was fun, but the story was very mid at best. 7/10 is a fine score for it.

Damn good is a stretch.

1

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

I still get confused with the whole 7/10 thing. 7 out of 10 would imply that it’s higher than average. With that logic, damn good fits perfectly well

1

u/ShogunDreams PS5 2d ago

Nah. Damn good would be an 8ish. I would say that 7 is between fine and good. Goodish(lol).

I personally gave it a 7.7/10 because the combat system was 👌.

Everything else...not so much. Oh the music was a nice mix.

Don't get me wrong, I still got the plat for it.

2

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Nah you’re good, everyone has their own opinions. I’m just one of the few doesn’t see that rating system as logical. For me 7= good, 8= great, 9= outstanding, 10= perfect

I’m just getting old lol

2

u/ShogunDreams PS5 2d ago

I am 37 I kinda have the same rate system.

5=mediocre

6=Average

7=Fine/solid

8=good

9= outstanding

10= Perfect.

I have been keeping track of what score I have given to the games I played since I was 16(I would have starter sooner it just never occurred to me to to it). I have this notebook with all my scores. Just for the memories.

2

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Swear! I’m 35 lol

Nah for me fine = good.

That’s not a bad idea honestly, what’s your fave of all time? If you don’t mind me asking

Freedom Fighters is my all time fav. A 6 back in the day, but damn I love it

2

u/ShogunDreams PS5 2d ago

Bruh! That's hard for me because I have 3.

Shadow of the Colossus(PS2) 10/10

Shinning force 2 Sega Genesis 6.5/10

Final Fantasy(PS2). 8.5/10

I love these games so much!.

1

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Fucking peak

Square ENIX was THE shit on ps2

2

u/ShogunDreams PS5 2d ago

It was. There were so many different types of experiences. Truly a gem of a generation.

1

u/TacoAcorazado 2d ago

I found it pretty mid, but I'm glad you enjoyed it.

1

u/sfgiantsfan696969 [5] 2d ago

Get plat

1

u/Big_Pass_330 2d ago

The PS community did badly on this one.
it was the best Team Ninja Team for me. Not too hard. Great historic story. good graphics and music.

1

u/Nosferatu_Zodddd 2d ago

Was so meh and 6.2/10

1

u/HumanRelatedMistake 2d ago

Your taste in games is even better.🤌🏾

1

u/RotationalMind 2d ago

This just reminded me that I lost my save 😓

1

u/Varil 2d ago

I played the demo for this pretty recently. It seemed decent, though I admit that having one of the two characters you make immediately die surprised me. I assume there's a catch at some point, but I put the demo down after since I figure I'll pick it up at some point anyway.

1

u/Ok_Code_1691 2d ago

Iv never seen it on sale

1

u/Traditional_Entry183 1d ago

Its a solid C+ game. It offers a lot of what I look for in my style, but at the same time the graphics and gameplay are pretty dated. Feels like a early PS4 game, or even a good PS3 game in a lot of ways, even though I have the PS5 version.

1

u/TOMAHAWAK1999 1d ago

Prob not as good as Ghost, but yeah? Still good enough for a playthrough? $35ish on ebay still so maybe its better than ive heard. What say you op? Would YOU recommend picking it up?

1

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

So Ghost and this game are nothing alike. I think the mistake lots of people made was thinking it was going to be story driven like ghost. This is an action rpg with the focus being the combat. The story is forgettable.

The combat can be infuriating at first because there are a lot of mechanics you have to learn to fight effectively, but my god, once you learn, it’s incredible.

If you like fast paced, flashy combat. You’ll love this

if you want a good story, one that you’ll remember for a while with memorable characters, you won’t like it.

1

u/TOMAHAWAK1999 1d ago

So, as someone who has platinumed darksouls, bloodborne and elden ring, you would say id like it?

1

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

100%

A lot of different types of weapons

A really good Character creator

Bosses that make you git gud

Unfortunately, no new game plus. You can choose to replay missions on a higher difficulty

1

u/TOMAHAWAK1999 1d ago

Alright! Ill put it on my radar! Thanks for the honesty

1

u/J0nny_Alcatraz 1d ago

Just got the platinum today , really enjoyed my time with it , great combat system

1

u/sir_chill 1d ago

I found the demo to be ok. I was expecting Nioh depth to combat but it didn’t feel right.

You should try Nioh series and Khazan the first berserker.

1

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 1d ago

Nah yeah it wasn’t as complex as nioh, but to me, it was still very satisfying. I already played 1 & 2 on ps4 long ago

1

u/sir_chill 1d ago

As a Nioh fan, I highly recommend Khazan, it’s like anime Nioh and combat is just too good. Controls are tight and feeling of perfect dodge and reflection is as good as Sekiro.

2

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 1d ago

Shit, ima have to check it out. Thanks for the info!

2

u/sir_chill 1d ago

They have taken many things of Nioh but made their own game. I plat the game in one run and wanted to play more. I never touch a game after plat trophy cuz after so many hours I am usually done.

And the sound is pretty good ( not just game music).

1

u/Shogun_The_Collector 2d ago

I have been putting off picking it up until it was at a decent sale. I may pick it up this weekend

1

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

It’s really good. Once you get the mechanics, the combat is damn fun

1

u/CommitteeBest82 2d ago

How does it compare to Tsushima in your opinion?

7

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

Different games. The story in GoT is far superior, and much more visually appealing but the combat here is miles ahead. The combat in GoT is very simple

1

u/Niijima-San Angerbanjo 2d ago

picked this up on sale from walmart a few months back, just started it the other day, enjoying it so far, its nothing to write home about but a nice solid 7/10 game so far

1

u/colehuesca PS5 2d ago

Yep it was great

0

u/LookinAtTheFjord 2d ago

It's boring to me and I can't bring myself to keep going when there are other better games available.

-3

u/Aureus23 2d ago

It's an ok PS3 game

0

u/RedShibo_ 2d ago

How can I get rid of Trial version? Played demo, got physical copy and whenever I'm removing the disc console still thinks it's Trial.

1

u/_CosmicTraveler_ 2d ago

No idea, never had that problem

1

u/RedShibo_ 2d ago

Not only console still thinks it's Trial, but full game also shares playtime with demo and automatically gives you trophies if you met the requirements in demo.

-2

u/strawhat316 2d ago

It was decent. But after you've played GOT, this falls short. It's based on real uprisings and the end of the shogunate era but they could've done so much better with the plot.

The combat and gameplay is pretty okayish at best. Pales in comparison to GOT
