I mean, the examples shown just require Extra, not premium

23

u/Able-Firefighter-158 2d ago

They're also always on sale, and for cheaper than a year of premium

Personally, I don’t find Premium adds much more than Extra these days. It’s become very expensive too.

16

u/GentlePamela100 2d ago

Yeah I get that, but Premiums value depends on what you actually play. For me, classics and trials make it worth it, otherwise Extra probably covers most peoples needs without paying the higher price.

5

u/curedbyink 2d ago

All of the games OP posted are on Extra.

u/NattyBatty- [Trophy Level 300-399] 1d ago edited 1d ago

Imo trials should be a basic function. Shouldn’t have to cost money in order to see if my purchase is worth it.

Premiums purpose is nostalgia bait. Though as a Trophy Hunter, it’s nice to get some old plats.

u/Tommh PS5 2d ago

It’s fine if you have a lot of time to play. Not worth it if you don’t.

38

u/borosmrad 2d ago

Exactly. Between my job, responsibilities, watching Netflix occasionally and playing Apex on PC in my free time, I take more than a month to beat one game on the PS5. I’d rather buy it and play it on my own time and pace without worrying my money goes down the drain.

8

u/-Gh0st96- PS5 2d ago

Yeap

6

u/Appropriate_Coffee43 2d ago

I’ll rather buy the games and play them whenever I want

5

u/alien_farmer1 2d ago

Yeah. I feel like, if you have unlimited time to play games it is good. But if you have limited time, there is literally no need. You can buy AAA games that takes +40 hours way cheaper and it will take few months to finish.

23

u/Subject-Cabinet6480 2d ago

The premium is 159.99. (Or half If you buy the yearly pass on Black Friday). As long as you play 2 games throughout the year, you got your money back. Excellent deal. Haven’t bought a game in a long time.

50

u/BigBad01 2d ago

A lot of those games go on sale with some regularity. I would not be buying them for 80 dollars.

9

u/Carinx 2d ago

It works if you have alot of time and only wish to play games once and move on to others. It comes down to rental vs owning.

11

u/alien_farmer1 2d ago

I have bought 10 games just equal to 3 months payment of PS Plus. And I could only finish only 2 of them in 3 months.

So your statement is a bit exaggerated. Also im not someone who rarely plays, only for Vallhala I had 70+ hours in 3 months. So unless you play 5+ hours per day, there is no logic to have PS Plus. Because you can buy the games really cheap with discounts.

I also need to add that I dont really find PS plus enough in any meaning, I think someone who plays too much have to buy an XBOX with Gamepass. It has way more games and you have all the new games just after the release. Ps plus is always 10 steps before the Gamepass.

5

u/LookinAtTheFjord 2d ago

$70x2=$140, but I do get what you're saying and I've made that point before as well. Even with the price hike last year or whenever it was it's still a great value if there's a bunch of games on there you wanna play and literally like 44 cents/day for yearly.

-7

u/Subject-Cabinet6480 2d ago

Aren’t games $80 now?

6

u/LookinAtTheFjord 2d ago

Standard price is $70 unless there's digital add-ons. Standard used to be $60, for a very, very long time.

6

u/Subject-Cabinet6480 2d ago

Oh ok. Idk why I thought they were $80. I haven’t bought a new game in awhile like I said lol.

3

u/alien_farmer1 2d ago

You dont have to buy 80$ games. You can buy cheap and few years old AAA games with full DLCs.

4

u/dominion1080 2d ago

You’re probably thinking of the Nintendo Switch 2. Fans weren’t pleased when they announced that.

2

u/foreveracubone 2d ago

And yet they still bought the $80 slop lol. Gamers are hopeless

1

u/LookinAtTheFjord 2d ago

Point stands though. Even if you only play three indie titles on there that are priced lower at like $50 you've still almost made your money back. Play another one, boom.

0

u/LemmingOnTheRunITG 2d ago

You’re probably thinking of switch 2 which made headlines for upping their prices to 80 recently.

0

u/-Gh0st96- PS5 2d ago

Newer games might be but why would old games retroactively be $80? Sony also still sells their new games at $70 (DS2, ghost of yotei)

2

u/Mystical_Cat PS5 2d ago

Same.

1

u/StandardGenius 2d ago

You have to wait a long long time for specific games to get added, if ever. Some games you want to play on release. AC Shadows for example

0

u/ash893 2d ago

You’re assuming the games are $80. You can literally wait and play games from 2 years ago with half the price.

32

u/DonJuan-CherryTempo 2d ago

You dont buy it, you lease it monthly

4

u/Chadderbug123 2d ago

Or just keep the cash handy for yearly

45

u/LeapOfSickness 2d ago

You know what's better than this... playing that backlog of games you own that you keep saying "ill get to it." Save ur money and play what you already own, lol

8

u/Nefariouzed 2d ago

This, exactly.

Most of us have dozens of games back there, please actually play them. They’re neglected.

2

u/LeapOfSickness 2d ago

I am guilty of this, too, but since stopping PS Plus last December I have been working on it.

6

u/seandude881 2d ago

How about you mind your business and let me fill up my backlog even more with games. Lol.

94

u/tired_developerr 2d ago

Ok sony marketing thanks for the message

4

u/BhrisBrzy 2d ago

It loses value over time. Once you’ve been subscribed for a year, the second year feels like a big drop-off. Enjoy it while it feels great

5

u/davidnestico2001 PS5 2d ago

Thanks, Sony PR, still not on par with Gamepass

16

u/AwareExtent3872 PS4 2d ago

what kinda pathetic marketing attempt is this

5

u/iminiki PS5 2d ago

Typical corporate marketing

0

u/garrus-ismyhomeboy 2d ago

They need to find someone who can actually write clear sentences if that’s the case lol

3

u/Jaycie859 PS5 2d ago

Not worth it

3

u/tenacious_teaThe3rd 2d ago

OP has unitonically made a good advert as to why Premium is not worth the cost over Extra.

You the hero we didn't deserve OP

11

u/sirkiller475 2d ago

Man, if premium is the best decision you made you should really try some stuff in life. Premium is, AT BEST, a fair deal for some months. Other times it's woefully disappointing.

11

u/VIP3R_GAMING 2d ago

Sometimes PS PLUS comes in clutch 💪

3

u/blackamerigan 2d ago

If you want to play new games Extra is all that's required, if on vacation you only really need it for 3 months, if you work full-time probably need 12 months so you can find the time to dabble

-1

u/VIP3R_GAMING 2d ago

I have premium for 12 months, the Premium games are great nostalgia, and easy platinums 🥴

8

u/Temporary-Rest3621 2d ago

Just don’t stop paying for it or the games go away. That’s the small caveat people overlook especially with subscriptions

10

u/Kratos_BOY 2d ago

Why would people overlook that? That's how every subscription under the sun works. You can't watch netflix without a sub.

-1

u/Temporary-Rest3621 2d ago

I just had a conversation with someone at work about how they don’t actually “have every game for free”.

So this post made be think of it

3

u/Kratos_BOY 2d ago edited 1d ago

Why would they think they have every game for free when they're paying for the subscription?

Anyway, dumber things have been said. I'm not going to bother doubting you.

1

u/Temporary-Rest3621 2d ago

Well that’s the point of it I kept going in circles about.

It all started because i mentioned I prefer physical copy games and was listing my collection. Then Bryce mentions that I’m retarded for buying physical games when I could just get ps+ and have them all for “free”

I replied on this post but in my heart I was talking to him lol

4

u/LookinAtTheFjord 2d ago

Hahaha, wtf. Is this satire? I honestly can't tell b/c it's such a blatantly obvious thing to say, lmao. Yes, I think everyone knows that once you end a subscription service you then no longer get to use that service.

1

u/Temporary-Rest3621 2d ago

No there are tons of people that claim “they get all the games for free”

1

u/LookinAtTheFjord 2d ago

I think you're misunderstanding what they actually mean. No one thinks you literally just get free games w/o paying for them.

You do get all the games on there for "free", by paying only one much lower price for the overall service. Nobody thinks you get to keep playing those "free" games after you end the service.

-1

u/Temporary-Rest3621 2d ago

You clearly are underestimating the people that work at Amazon. I had this conversation with him about 10:30 this morning and this post immediately reminded me of it

1

u/colpo 2d ago

You had a conversation and suddenly "tons" of people think this?

1

u/chrisosorio1 2d ago

“drink water because it’s good for you” this man said

5

u/MobydFTW 2d ago

I just got a PS5 so it's letting me play the exclusives. I might drop to essential at some point

2

u/chudlybubly 2d ago

premium seems to allow more games to play so just grind out the ones you like. theres no shortage. death stranding is also there

5

u/insert_smile 2d ago

Nothing from that list is expensive ,excluding miles morales,mk 1 was on sale for 20$ ,Skyrim also was on sale for 10 $ ,TLOU you can get cheap on secondary market.I know I'm going to get down voted by die hard ps+ premium fans, but let me tell you something.Just bought Star Wars Outlaws and Ac Shadows for 50$ both ,and when I finish them I can sell them ( I'm not going to sell ) but I can easily get 40$ for both.

2

u/SYRLEY PS5 2d ago

Cool but theres still the rest of the catalogue and the freedom of trying a game without having to decide whether its worth buying or not.

1

u/mihhink 2d ago

Paying hundreds per year to test out games seems ineffective. If youre in the mindset of trying multiple games to see what stick, may as well just look at youtube gameplay. If youre going from trying out a game to trying out another one, then theyre all garbage games to begin with since theyre not good enough to finish through.

2

u/SYRLEY PS5 2d ago edited 2d ago

But I don't have to use YouTube. I have psplus extra. And I have friends who also have psplus extra so I can play the catalogue games with them aswell. And im gamesharing the same sub to my partner so he has the catalogue too and can play whatever he wants.

And im not JUST testing games. Way to nitpick one thing I said and decide thats all im using the sub for... I GET go try games coz I have extra. Some stick, some dont. It doesn't matter coz I'm not paying anything extra by doing it.

Plus I get the sub discounted every year.

-1

u/ash893 2d ago

That’s not cost effective. Why pay psplus when you can look at gameplay on YouTube for FREE.

2

u/SYRLEY PS5 2d ago

Coz I'm not buying psplus to get reviews. I'm buying psplus to play games.

Having the freedom to try games without needing a review first is just a bonus.

You might aswell be asking "why buy the game to play when you can just watch someone play?". By your logic, don't buy games either. YouTube is free.

-1

u/ash893 1d ago

I didn’t say reviews, I said checkout gameplay. Since you mentioned you bought psplus since you can try out games and see if they are worth playing. You can do that guy watching gameplay on youtube, not reviews.

2

u/SYRLEY PS5 1d ago

I meant reviews as in looking at a game to see if you like it. Whichever way you want to do it.

I gave you some benefits of having it. Not exact exclusive reasons that will fit everyone. You're just arguing for the sake of arguing.

The day I stop buying psplus will be the day I start watching gameplay or reviews on YouTube before buying a game. But for now, I dont need to. Coz I dont need to buy many games coz I have many to play from the catalogue, which I can just install and try for no extra cost even if im not entirely sure whether I will like it.

You don't have to see the same worth as me. Just stop acting like my or anyone else's use of pslpus is wrong. Its annoying.

0

u/ash893 1d ago

I just said it’s not cost effective, I didn’t say it’s not for you. Not everyone wants to buy psplus for reviewing games and to see if they like it since YouTube exists.

0

u/mihhink 1d ago

let it be man lol these people rather pay 100s a year for a glorified demo service or 100s a year to have a backlog theyll never complete.

1

u/SYRLEY PS5 1d ago

...youre so dead set on that ONE detail. Everything else is going so over your head, its baffling.

2

u/HaikusfromBuddha 2d ago

A lot of these games aren’t expensive is the thing.

2

u/k20vtec 2d ago

Even when I was on Xbox I refused games pass id rather just own my games then get caught in a subscription loop that gets more expensive every 6 months

2

u/Watery_robin96 2d ago

It is good for first one or two years to play some playstation hits games first time. Not for those who’ve already played old hits and those who want to play latest titles like stellar blade , ff7 rebirth , ff16, spider man 2, last of us 2 , black myth wukong, clair obscure expedition etc.

2

u/Ginmunger 2d ago

Thats the thing, its a good deal if you like to play online and can get it on an annual sale.

The problem is its not as good as gamepass and if you want to play new games you still have to buy them. Ps plus doesnt get them till they are already on sale. Ive spent about what I would of on a sub to buy a few games that will take me months to play while I wait for Ghost of Yotei. I like them so much I might wait to buy Ghost.

2

u/sir_chill 2d ago

Extra is heaps better than premium when it’s come to value. Also, none of those games are expensive.

2

u/vitkeumeomeo 2d ago

nah bro lol

2

u/ash893 2d ago

Nice try Sony

2

u/Harambaes-papa96 [Trophy Level 200-299] 2d ago

Premium isn't worth it at all tbh, also these games are on extra, so premium is unnecessary.

2

u/defph0bia PS4 2d ago

Don't you just need PS Plus Extra for these games? Isn't premium just for the classic games?

2

u/Riders6 2d ago

I don't see the point in playing 50 games instead of focusing on a few.

2

u/ash893 1d ago

Exactly, people act like they are going to be able to play the whole catalog when realistically you can probably play 2-3 games a year assuming most people have jobs, family, and kids to attend to.

2

u/Eskadrinis 1d ago

Yes it’s a great deal for retired people 😂😂😂

2

u/Independent_Potato99 1d ago

Don’t the games expire?

2

u/Spare-Image-647 1d ago

Glad you enjoy it. I found it a waste of money. I can buy the games I want and it’s cheaper than paying for extra plus tiers

4

u/popps_c 2d ago

You don’t even need premium, you just wasting money

0

u/LookinAtTheFjord 2d ago

It's absolutely amazing for newcomers, yeah.

Eventually you'll find that you no longer really need it once you play all the hits.

1

u/DisBonFire PS5 Pro 2d ago

I mean it is if you are new to the platform and didn’t get these games. For someone like me I’ve already played all these games and own them.

1

u/Minuslee 2d ago

yea my account is a decade old now. not much if anything i can get by subbing to higher tiers.

1

u/rofaheys 2d ago

I stay at extra. I actually had un subscribed a month ago because I wasn’t happy with it, immediately subscribed back when they added Coral Island and Unicorn Overlord 😭

1

u/Spiritual-Vehicle-87 2d ago

i have a question if you get ps5 plus membership and u get the games they give u do u have access to those games forever even if ur membership ends or will the game go away?

1

u/yeahh_itsme23 2d ago

no bro after the subscription ends u can’t play those games again without premium or u can buy it

1

u/Spiritual-Vehicle-87 2d ago

is it only for premium membership or can i get it with essential

1

u/CrazyChicken43 2d ago

I bought spiderman and mk1 on the day they were added 😭😭

1

u/G-o-m-S 2d ago

i swear i see this type of post in this subreddit a few times already. Is this some sort of subliminal campaign to make us buy playstation plus?

1

u/OrdinaryNo7285 2d ago

I’m rocking the top subscription. Paying I think 17.99 a month. I’ve only had it since May, as I’m not working at the moment. It’s nice to know you have the library at your fingertips, but could also give ya choice paralysis.

With it I’ve played a session of Arkham Knight, Robocop. I still have my trail for Alan Wake II. GOT I’ve put 40 hours in. So maybe I haven’t got a lot of games in but there’s only so many hours in a day. Especially if you’re working full-time/school.

I’ll try to complete a couple more games, making the payment worth it. Then decide, if I’m gonna keep it going. I don’t revisit games usually after playing the but it’s still hard knowing once I stop the sub, they’re gonna be gone lol.

1

u/Genderneutralsky 2d ago

I find Premiun was too much for not enough of an upgrade over Extra. Extra has many games I want to play and I find myself buying less games since there’s already so much on Extra. If you take full advantage of what it offers, Extra is a pretty good deal.

1

u/GrimmTrixX 2d ago

If you play so much as two or three $60 retail titles in a year that are on PS+ Premium, it pays for itself. I of course don't want all gaming to become subscription based. But I use Xbox Game Pass and PS+ constantly.

1

u/General-Future-4946 2d ago

You get your moneys worth out of ps+ if you explore games outside of the big hits. For instance im playing deaths door atm and i would have never known about it without it being on psplus. It's a great 10-15hour game. I never really run out of games with it.

1

u/Herculumbo 2d ago

PS Plus Extra I immense value for me since I missed the entire last generation.

1

u/Appropriate_Type_178 2d ago

I just started playing Ghost of Tsushima and fuck man it’s so good

1

u/BabyHercules 2d ago

I envy the kids who have this. I come from the age of making a new game last as long as possible because that’s all mom was buying. Even had to coordinate with the bros so everyone got the same game lol

1

u/Dixnot 2d ago

I bought a month just for Demon's Souls, The Last of Us, Days Gone, Death Stranding, White Knight Chronicles and a bunch of other PS1-PS3 games. I'll play as much as I can this month since it's slow season at work, then I'll let it expire and probably do the same thing again in 3-4 months.

1

u/MeanAvocada 2d ago

I bought CP2077 with the add-on for €30 a month ago.

1

u/Big-Square-3393 2d ago

Can you please explain for us what happens to these games when you decide to stop paying the subscription?

1

u/SYRLEY PS5 2d ago

They are no longer playable til you resub obvs

2

u/Big-Square-3393 2d ago

Yes exactly so i just don't understand the post, for example say you want to replay the game but you don't have a subscription anymore and it's no longer on the service.. you'll then have to buy it anyway so I just don't get why ps plus is spoke about like it's such a good deal when it's really not lol

1

u/SYRLEY PS5 2d ago

It is a good deal if you don't buy many games and want to play many different kinds of games.

People say discs are the best deal coz you can sell them afterwards, but that also means you can't replay them. Whats the difference then

2

u/Big-Square-3393 2d ago

Oh yeah I don't agree with the whole disc thing lol so I get your point, I will never sell a physical copy of any of my games. Also yeah I'm just talking from my perspective I just feel it's not worth it. only subscription in gaming I think is worth it is gamepass, the game catalogue is just way superior

1

u/SYRLEY PS5 2d ago

You don't have to have the same perspective to understand why the sub could be worth it for someone else.

I could buy 1-2 games or I could sub for the catalogue. Its as simple as that. Yeah games will leave and it requires a subscription, but for the price of 1-2 full priced games, i have one year to play whichever catalogue game i please.

And gamepass is irrelevant for me coz I have a playstation. Not an xbox or pc.

2

u/Big-Square-3393 2d ago

I should have worded it differently I should have said that I guess I can understand it but still don't think it's worth it at all. Not saying people shouldn't have a ps plus I just don't see any value in it (even with the reasons you listed because that's what I used to say before when I did have one lol).

Also yeah that's fair I have a pc and it was only when I had the ability to have gamepass when I realized ps plus is so not worth it but again you do you I'm not saying you should stop using it and if it works for you it works I just don't see value in it that's all

1

u/SYRLEY PS5 2d ago

You said you didn't understand the post. All it takes is realising its worth to you isnt the same as its worth to others. Its quite simple really.

2

u/Big-Square-3393 1d ago

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, me thinking that doesn't mean I have anything against people who use it if that makes sense

1

u/SuhShenron PS4 2d ago

Not exactly. You can play them as long as they remain on the game catalogue and your subscription remains active. That might work for titles you just need to play once in a lifetime, but games that require continuity are not that convenient.

Long story short. With PS Plus you are just buying time.

1

u/Due_Music_6385 2d ago

No, it's Extra... More value

1

u/AceMcNasty88 2d ago

Lol you don't wanna check out gamepass then.

1

u/Practical_Relief_352 2d ago

Yeah I mainly only pay for the subscription service and don't buy any games it kinda sucks but it's that or buy like two games a year for the same price just cheaper for me sucks cuz you do miss some good games or have to wait awhile but I didn't have a PS4 so there are a bunch of games because last ps I owned was a PS2 I just wish they would add more psvr2 games sucks

1

u/ki700 Lvl 277 | P:23 | G:132 | S:349 | B:1365 2d ago

It’s a good value if you want to play lots of older titles from before PS4. Otherwise Extra is much better.

1

u/TheStrangeHand 2d ago

Does Premium offer a bigger catalog than Extra? I currently have the lowest tier but I've been considering upgrading to Extra for the game catalog. With Premium, I've seen it includes the streaming of legacy games and then most of the time for newer games it's just a 2-hour trial.

Are there newer full games available for Premium that aren't available for Extra?

1

u/horizonvortex 2d ago

Is that Vikings game new?

1

u/thetruelu PS5 Pro 2d ago

Premium isn’t that worth it imo. Extra is all you need

1

u/Reiggn_Drrop 2d ago

A lot of these games I got on sale for a heavily discounted rate lol, but if you got the time on your hands to play and enjoy a lot of titles by all means it’s worth it.

1

u/tikokit 2d ago

I have a portal and it greatly benefits from the premium tier

1

u/ReplacementOk1056 PS5 2d ago

Ehh needs more of a collection library like Xbox Game pass then I’ll buy

1

u/SliceEast7520 2d ago

Happy for you 🤩

1

u/omkarpranav 2d ago

Getting ps plus subscription the first time will always be profitable

1

u/Maleficent-Disk3377 2d ago

And do you even keep access after your yearly subscription is over, and you went back to standard? I doubt it

1

u/Sakaixx 2d ago

Unless you play old PS1, PSP and PS2 games, premium tier is hard to justify tbh... i am on premium as well but Extra is the sweet spot as I dont ever touch those classic titles.

1

u/Complete_Lurk3r_ 2d ago

A lot of PC users always say "playstation sucks, you have to pay for online"... Disregarding the fact that you get about 10x the value in free games and access to streaming another 600-700 games. I have a PC, PS premium is a certified bargain.

1

u/jatin0690 2d ago

suggest some good game from catalogue i have completed most of then now its useless for me

1

u/Odd-Situation-524 2d ago

Trial wise I guess u can

1

u/Logical-Salamander79 2d ago

Those of us who play on Xbox and pay for the Gamepass ultimate:

1

u/Laaamps 2d ago

Worth it when u have enough time, congrats

1

u/subhanghani 2d ago

I have extra and was thinking of switching over to Premium mainly for their cloud gaming to save space. Would this be worth it?

1

u/shadowfax21 2d ago

I too like ps plus, many a times I used to buy games I played for little and lost interest or sometimes the game got too hard for me and I stopped playing. With ps plus I don't have the guilt of buying and not playing it and I can play 5 games before I hit one I really like and then I play the game till heart's content.

1

u/Axel-Pizza-Lover 2d ago

Ps Plus Extra worth and better than Premium

1

u/yeahh_itsme23 2d ago

this is already ps plus extra bro

2

u/_This_Is_Ridiculous 1d ago

This doesn't make sense. You stated you have Premium, not Extra. All the games you showed are from the other 2 tiers, not Premium. You paid too much if you aren't actually playing the Premium games.

1

u/426hemi-power 2d ago

This is extra not premium lol. Also not all the games stay free. Some get locked up again and that’s sucks when you want to get back to one and find out it’s off the menu.

1

u/GMAERS_07 PS5 2d ago

I bought ps plus extra last year (about 15~20$ in my country cuz it's shared with 2 others) played more than 10 games that's worth 50-60$ each. What a win, and people are still saying ps plus is a loss of money. You can just buy it if you know what games you're going to play, if you already played those games then that will be a loss for you, you have to be smart before buying.

I have psplus extra and honestly? Its probably saved me tons over the years and gave me a chance to really find my interests when it comes to games probably saved me money because I didnt have to buy a game I didnt like for one reason or another.

I agree with you I’m playing a lot of games that still have $50-$60 price tags for free to me it’s completely worth it

Nope! Subscription sucks. It should be free to play online.

I still only pay £65/year for premium.

How?

u/Christhebobson 2d ago

Likely had PS Now probably at 1 year sub. I only had 1 month, so I'll be grandfathered into $120/year for premium once my current sub ends.

My PS Now sub expired last year November, it autorenewed at £65. It's expiring this year again and still shows £65 for autorenewal. I just won't cancel autorenew or take advantage of PS+ "deals".

I had PS Now and PS+ before they were combined. Sony still honors the pricing of that to an extent as long as I don't cancel my subscription or take advantage of PS+ deals.

Most of these games you can get much cheaper at Walmart, cyberpunk along is almost always on sale 💀

Do you mean the ps4 copy or ps5? I like the idea of getting spider man or days gone(ps4) then loading into the ps5, and paying 10 bucks for the remaster. You could check OfferUp or something and get those games for like 15, plus the 10 to remaster it.

My local Walmart doesn’t even sell PS4 versions anymore it’s all PS5 with 10-20 dollar price differences compared to the PSN store

Wal mart coming through clutch. Yeah now that I think of it they don’t sell PS4. It’s been awhile since I looked at the section well at wal mart. So yeah second hand is good too.
