SOCIAL MEDIA "Computer Language"😭[socialmedia]

Augh I hate this! Modern programmers are so lucky that people like Rear Admiral Grace Hopper created the languages we have now. Imagine having to write binary by hand. Imagine having to physically rewire the machine itself. The abstractions of high level languages make the tech accessible. Programming languages are hard ofc, but that's because you're talking to a dumb machine that can't error correct (at least not without a programmer designing that error correction process). A person will hear you flub a word and still probably understand what you meant. A single typo can completely break a program.

" Imagine having to write binary by hand" -I'm having GCSE computing flashbacks xC

Honestly it would be nice if that more rudimentary stuff was taught more, at least for perspective. I've definitely heard family talk about the days of coding in DOS, this stuff escalated fast in adoption and capabilities.

u/Wishing-Winter 4d ago
it would be nice but my issue was we had like one quick explanation and then my teacher got mad at me because I couldn't do it immediately 😭

What a dim misogynist view to take. World without the grand dames of programming would be so much poorer.

Except computer language is so easy. Its all logical and no second meanings or undertones or hidden messages. After a year of learning i was a pretty decent programmer, but after a year of learning any human language you can, what? Order mcdonalds? Ask the way to the train station? Have all your verbs in order so you can translate a sentence, but only on paper and in no way fast enough to actually speak?

u/Franick_ 4d ago
Nah after two years of computer engineering i fucking gave up on coding, its such bullshit. At least with a human we can try to understand each other, with a machine its like headbutting your head on a wall
18
u/jackalope268 4d ago
With computers i know its my fault. Humans also always make me believe its my fault, but that cant always be true
7
u/Franick_ 4d ago
No, i've had time when not even my professors could figure out what was wrong. Sometimes just restarting everything worked, i cant deal with this level of bullshit in my life, coding has been so awful for me because stuff happens for no reason, with no logic, and you cant do anything about it. With people I can at least confront them about stuff.
5
u/Budget_Avocado6204 4d ago
My grandfather used to day "computers don't do what we want them to do, they do what we asked them to do". Programming languages are perfectly logical. If something is.working in a different way it ain't a computers fault.
2
u/Franick_ 4d ago
You all have to stop with this logical stuff, its not true, i have seen it and experienced it. I've had some of the most miserable years of my life trying to understand this stuff. When not even professor can understand what is wrong, i give up. Not to talk how incomprehensible error messages are, my god. I might as well cry and break this machine, it wouldnt change a thing. I finally will get my degree next month, and then i dont know what i will do because i dont want to touch this stuff ever again in my life, its the most inhumane stuff one could ever do
1
u/Lumiharu 1d ago
Yes this is how you feel after a year, but later you will realize how little you actually know. Baseline Assembly is indeed not that difficult, but it can be kinda context specific. And don't get me even started on something like using Javascript frameworks cause those are on surface easy but then you end up having to read some obscure library's documentation and hate your life. But if we're talking about computer language, I am assuming you don't mean something that far removed from the actual machine, as there is obfuscation on top of obfuscation.

Computer language is probably the simplest to understand because it by definition lacks ambiguety

Fun fact, subroutines were invented by women working on ENIAC: https://fortune.com/2014/09/18/walter-isaacson-the-women-of-eniac/
I saw this ages ago but couldnt remember where I read it for the life of me
If you dont know what a computer subroutine is, it may be the single most important way of reducing the complexity of reading software, at least in my opinion.

I mean it’s a stupid meme but how is it pointlessly gendered? There is a point to it. Some people say women are hard to understand
-52
u/Alert-Enthusiasm-947 4d ago
Wait, this isn't funny? To anyone?
32
u/Ning_Yu 4d ago
Is it supposed to be?
-26
u/Alert-Enthusiasm-947 4d ago
Low-key yes
22
u/derpmonkey69 4d ago
The punchline is literally just misogyny. Please explain how that's funny.
The class would love to know.
-21
u/Alert-Enthusiasm-947 4d ago
The same way that your username is "Derpmonkey" and the disabled class doesn't come for you saying, "That's an offensive slur" It's humor, if you don't like the joke just say, "hey I didn't think that was funny" This, for the AVERAGE person, and not the sweaty, I-Live-In-An-Echochamber-On-Reddit kind of people, we find it pretty "lol" worthy. Not a, hold my sides and slap my knee kind of funny, but funny like how we used to say things like, "Yo momma so fat, she uses the equator as a belt" and still go over to said friend's house and call their mom like she's your own and still show her the utmost respect.
14
u/derpmonkey69 4d ago
The disabled class? Wtf that's not how classes work...
Anyhow, nobody has a problem with it because derp is a mostly nonsense meme word.
That was a very poor attempt to explain how punching down is funny.

u/Alert-Enthusiasm-947 4d ago
It's not?
In Oxford dictionary... Noun 1. a set or category of things having some property or attribute in common and differentiated from others by kind, type, or quality. "the accommodations were good for a hotel of this class"
Thing = people Category = disabled
Did we make clarifying terms now?
And how do you know I don't have a problem with it? DerpMonkey could be a racial slur as well, considering I'm black. Derp isn't clarified in the dictionary, it's only socially known among a specific age-class which would be millennial and up. We can do this all day, I really don't care. You and I BOTH know this is a joke, and if you want to be mad at the joke it's fine. Just don't come for me with that virtue signaling.
6
u/derpmonkey69 4d ago
Now you're concern trolling. Lame, pathetic behavior.

u/flourbender 4d ago
I get this, but I think when you say the “average person”, you mean the average straight male. The average woman or feminist won’t clutch their pearls at this joke, but they also won’t laugh. The joke isn’t super offensive, but it plays into negative hegemonic ideas. It gives a bad taste bc women’s historical achievements are far less spoken about and respected generally etc etc. Also women generally understand women, so the “punchline” falls flat anyway.
The only reason I think any woman would laugh at this joke is to avoid awkwardness. Like you said the joke is no knee slapper. So if u see this on Reddit, ur more likely to enjoy it due to the thought of “ omg the feminists are gonna get so upset 😏”, over the actual joke itself imo. You can have a lil nose exhale at the joke if it’s in line with your experience tho. Overall I’m just bored and I don’t think this is really a big deal in any measure 🤷🏻. But fun to discuss ig

u/No-Somewhere-1336 4d ago
i reallt hope you're being sarcastic, cause i dont even get the sense of this joke. Women are difficult to understand? Computer language is difficult to understand? It makes no sense
-4
u/Alert-Enthusiasm-947 4d ago
Lol I'ma get downvoted to hell and IDC.
Yes, it's funny; if you've EVER tried programming, at all, and you're not some self-professed Jimmy neutron genius, then you'd know that it's hard for people with no knowledge of coding. Average male today doesn't understand women; why is another topic. So yeah, it's funny. Not meant to be taken seriously. Y'all can't go find Xavier and shoot him up like that-- nvm, you got the reference.
10
u/No-Somewhere-1336 4d ago
yeah i mean thats an opinion, i disagree but who cares
but like
programming is not that hard, im a teen and i learnt self tought in like a few weeks (and trust me im dumb) - also it might depend on the programming language, like C / python is fairly easy and C++ is not that hard too, idk what can be so hard
-4
u/Alert-Enthusiasm-947 4d ago
You're a teen, exactly. I'm an average man in his 30's that's been a salesman all his life. I also have an audio engineering degree. Can you separate WAV forms into overlap without causing distortion? It's pretty rough if you've never used a DAW before; and all I said, in lament terms, was to "extend the beat and make it sound clean" Whether you get offended or not, your generation was built into the technology that my generation designed; not to be ageist at all. Have you ever put furniture together without instructions? It's pretty difficult right?
8
u/No-Somewhere-1336 4d ago
ok srry ig, dont take it personally
0
u/Alert-Enthusiasm-947 4d ago
Wym don't take it personally? You can't even tell what tone I have right now lol the Internet is a scary place, sometimes it's best to close the windows and open the door.

If you've ever tried speaking English, at all, even if you're some self-professed genius, then you'd know that it's impossible for people with no knowledge of English. You just made programming sound a lot easier than regular language. Did you notice?
Only the male who thinks "understanding women" is a thing have trouble with it, and that's only rather below-average males.
1
u/Budget_Avocado6204 4d ago
Programming languages are perfectly logical. You are right, it is very funny, but not the way you think lol. It's calling women logical and men unable tu understand logic ^

Yes, that's correct. Nobody finds this funny. It's just a little sad. You want to give the widdle baby a pacifier and tuck him into bed.
Excellent assessment.
