Many of them see themselves as white. I have a friend from Brazil that's pretty dark skinned and he considers himself to be white when visually he is somewhere between black and dark skinned Hispanic

This is the issue. “My ancestors are Spanish from Spain therefore I am of European descent just like the Italians therefore I am white.”

To be honest that would be mostly Argentinians but other countries in Latin American don’t consider themselves to be European but of course there might be a few but a minority. Yet classism in Latin America based in skin color is definitely still present.

Lighter skin tone being a sign of beauty is all over the world. It is absolutely crazy how western media has indoctrinated people. I think it’s incredibly sad.

I think colonization is more to blame than western media. The exception (to western colonization) being maybe Asia where it has more to do with associating leisure class with not having to work out in the sun.

Yeah, you’re right, but western media continues to show one European face, body style, and complexion as beautiful, so I think it reinforces it.

Not just beauty but also wealth and status. Poorer people work in the fields in the sun all day and have darker skin.

This has been a thing in South America since the Spanish Conquest and the introduction of the casta system. The whiter you were with the less native ancestry the higher up in the social hierarchy you were. An idea of “pure blood” vs “mixed blood” vs “natives” or “African/Afro-Mexican,” with different levels to the hierarchy based on how pure or mixed you were.

It still exists in South America - and is the reasoning behind why people with lighter skin tones maintain greater social and economic and advantages.

So why do white nations have tanning solons?

The president uses bronzer.

Did America make men want to grow beards too?
