question Search providers

Good afternoon! I am requesting the opinion of those who know more than I about search engines. Kagi specifically. Would you recommend this search engine or try for something else? Any info and advise appreciated. 👍

I’ve used Kagi since the month it went live, and I love it. Is there anything specific you want to know about it?

Mostly anything privacy related. Also if the company behind Kagi has a good reputation. I gleem what I can from online reviews, but ironically reddit has been more helpful in this area. Haha. To summarize, any complaints or concerns? Any opinions?

For privacy, are you aware of Kagi Privacy Pass? It allows you to use Kagi with a paid subscription without revealing your identity to Kagi when you use it. I use Kagi in normal mode, without Privacy Pass, but I think it's neat they're thinking about features like this that I've never seen before. I recommend that you read their privacy page if you want to know about their overall approach to privacy. There's a lot there.

The only complaint I have is that I can't set it as the default search engine in Safari, since I mainly use Apple products. Kagi has a Safari extension that detects search engine URLs and redirects them to Kagi, so it ends up having a similar effect. But every once in a while a search isn't caught by the extension, and I see DuckDuckGo search results instead. If that happens, I just refresh the page and the extension will correctly point it to Kagi instead, so not a big deal, but a minor annoyance. And the annoyance is really with Apple, for not allowing as much freedom with search engine selection as Firefox or Chrome.

But I really like Kagi. It has lots of cool features like blocking results from certain sites, always including a link to the archive.org Web Archive, constant product improvements with changelogs, and on and on.
