New watcher!
Hey everyone!
I just started this show (instantly loved it) and wanted to dip into the fandom a bit—without spoiling myself. I’m about halfway through season 2, which feels like barely the beginning since there are 8 seasons. Idk, maybe this is one of those shows where everyone swears the first 3 seasons are peak? We’ll see.
Anyway, I just wanted to get a feel for the fandom. I’m in a bunch of other ones and they all have such different vibes—fandoms honestly have their own personalities.
Also… can someone explain the pineapple thing to me? From what I can tell, Shawn loves it, the show kinda rolled with it, and then the fandom took it and ran—so now it’s on literally every piece of Psych merch. Or is there a deeper meaning I’m missing? Either way, I think it’s hilarious.
Thanks for reading!

Yeah, James Roday Rodriguez ad libbed the “shall I slice this for the road?” in the pilot, and it became a thing the rest of the series. I started watching when it was first on the air and I have never NOT taken a pic of a pineapple when I’m in public and send it to my friends. I’ve been the reigning champ for 19 years LOL.
Also, while I absolutely love the first few seasons, my favorite episodes are mostly (not all lol) from 4-8. And the movies are awesome too!
ETA: welcome to the Psych-O’s! Lol 🍍

That's awesome 😭 I'm glad it's chill here, other fandoms can get a bit messy when someone says shit about certain character or ship, etc. Anyway thank you!!

Welcome to the fandom! So you're not left scratching your head, I'll just confirm that sometimes the Pineapple doesn't show up because the few bits they were able to cram it into were cut.
My favorite seasons are 2-5, but most of my favorite episodes are in 6-8. It's a pretty solid show throughout!

Imo, the seasons get better as you go on! Shawn and Gus form deeper relationships with all the dudes in the SBPD, so it becomes more fun but also heartwarming at times. The pineapple is the Psych mascot lol.

The show is amazing. A few episodes that miss, but two of the best are in the latter seasons: Office Space and Last Night Gus. Enjoy!

Last Night Gus is up there with my favorite episodes of any tv show ever. Top 5 at least. It never gets old.

Also, the creator of the show, Steve Franks, wrote his first movie while working at some pineapple place at Disneyland. I'm not familiar because I have never been, but he talked about it on the Psych rewatch podcast. someone else probably remembers more detail!

Steve Franks worked at the Tiki Room attraction at Disney Land and the Dole Whip place is adjacent to the Tiki Room.

Welcome friend! This show is not only something I come back to ever since I was shown, but also helps me through times of great anxiety. I put the show on and it makes me feel good and helps distract my mind from the scary stuff. S6e14 Autopsy Turvy is my favorite episode. Season 6 might be my favorite season too. May want to stay off the sub for now Incase of spoilers. Definitely watch the movies when you finish the show and have a hole in your heart thay nothing but more Psych can fill.

That is beautiful. I actually started it because I wasn't doing so great (mentally) and since episode one this show gives you good and chill vibes and keeps you smiling!

I'm addition to all the other great and accurate comments you've received, I want to mention WHY this fandom is so awesome.
Steve Franks's, the show's creator, had a "no AHs" rule. So the set and the whole process was very positive. Anytime you hear a guest star talk about their time on Psych they mention that it was amazing. Usually guest stars feel like visitors because the regulars have already established their dynamic and and are a family, so guests feel like a visitor in the family home. They all say Psych was different and they were immediately welcomed as family.
The cast and crew still have a group chat and still hang out together.
The actors who play Lassie and Jules have a podcast that is a Psych rewatch podcast and you can really feel the love they all have for each other (they bring on various guests, including series regulars, crew, and guest stars).
I don't think the podcast really has spoilers (they discuss each episode one at a time, so if you listen to a season 2 centric episode, they won't spoil something that happens in season 7), but I still think it makes sense to listen after you finish the series.
Also, some tips:
Remember the show aired at a time when you would have AT LEAST a week between episodes. Some things feel "sudden" if you're binging, but if you remember how it was intended to be watched, it feels more natural.
There are some episodes without pineapples, so don't go crazy trying to find them all.
Remember the phrase "pancake butt." The butt in question belongs to Steve Franks. It's in Season 2, Episode 16.
Watch the musical somewhere before Season 7 Episode 7. It aired out of order.

Interestingly, either Steve got the No A-hole style from when he did Big Daddy, or Adam Sandler got it from him then, because I have heard some small references on other podcasts that lead me to believe Sandler has the same rule!

Welcome! Psych is my desert island show. Wholesome, hilarious, emotional, relatable, it’s just excellent entertainment on so many levels.
And this is a fantastic fandom/subreddit. Post something you love, and we weigh in joyfully!

Welcome!! I’m newer to this sub but not new to Psych, everyone here is LOVELY and KIND, it’s good vibes all around!
Butttt, I might mute it until you’re done with the show! Just so you don’t accidentally see any spoilers!

Welcome! We in this fandom community are amazing everyone is so kind to each other. This little corner of Reddit is one of my favorite places. We seriously share pineapple pics, quote the show constantly and debate which of the ridiculous names Shawn gives Gus is the best.
If you’re chill and love the show you will fit in just fine here!

It has one of the most solid story arcs from the first ep to the last and the movies are also fun. The musical is brilliant. We got lucky the whole cast really gelled immediately. Dule left West Wing for this and it was a great move. He and James acknowledge that because the show was made at the right time on the right network it allowed them to explore the story really well and not focus only on the viewing numbers for the first few seasons so it ultimately did become one of the best " blue skies" era "characters welcome" shows in the lineup on USA network. It ran with White Collar, Royal Pains, Covert Affairs, Burn Notice, Suits, Necessary Roughness.
It is still one of my favorite inspired by Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson shows.

You've made the right choice to check out the community, but do beware spoilers. They're not really tagged anymore since the show has been over for quite a while! :)
There is lots of lore to learn about (the making of) the show, so feel free to ask questions as you go along.

Welcome! So excited for you to experience it for the first time. But it also has incredible rewatchability because there are so many little things to catch.
When thinking up episode ideas, they’d often start with either a world (eg roller derby) or another tv show or film or genre and then build from there. So, if you feel like you’re missing some of the jokes, it’s probably a reference you’re not familiar with. (But don’t worry, there are always plenty of other jokes that don’t require extensive knowledge of all the things. :)) And feel free to look up the references for any episodes that pique your curiosity. While there’s the occasional continuity issue (basic cable budget and timelines!), the creative team was really thoughtful about their choices.
This is the type of show where you can take deep dives and just continue to be delighted.

I’ve been in an out of fandom spaces for decades, can confirm Psych is one of the chillest online and in person. Everything is pretty positive over here!

Psych is my absolute go-to show for any mood I’m in! I think it held its strength all the way through, and from there on through the movies. The fandom here does seem very welcoming and chill , especially compared to some others I tiptoe around in. Enjoy the show!

Welcome to the fandom! It’s honestly very chill and friendly here. A lot of quote offs of favorite episode discussions. As far as the pineapple thing, I think it was just like an improvised line James did in the pilot episode and they kept going with it as a running gag so there’s pineapples hidden throughout the episodes as an Easter egg
