FLUFF I got a job as accountant.

I graduated last May for my MPH in EPI and struggling to get a job. 2 days ago I got a part-time job as a bookkeeper getting paid $35 per hour. I know it’s only part-time but I’m so happy. It’s a 12-minute walk from my parents’ house. So I can save money and now I can focus on getting a 2nd job.

I have no experience and don’t even know what a debit or credit is. The CPA firm only offered me a part-time position. I’m a bit disappointed, but the hourly rate is actually quite high. I was expecting minimum wage.

Genuinely curious…How does one make it to advanced degree age and through a bookkeeping interview w/o basic knowledge of the difference between a debit (money removed or a debit card) and credit (money given or a credit card)? I would think that would be something you’d at least look up to prep for the interview. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited for you to have a job and income (congrats!), but something about this whole thing feels fishy, and not necessarily on your part. Does the firm plan to train you from scratch? If yes, then that makes more sense.

Not a credit card or debit card. All transactions must have both credit and debit. I did prep before the interview, but it’s just not enough time for me to learn all the basics. The job is very easy. Mostly data entry and categorizing the numbers. I was very scared because instead of interviewing me, he instead thought of me there, and I started the same day. Only 4 hours because he is an old accountant and he doesn’t accept clients anymore. I hope this helps.

I thought an accounting degree was needed to do that?

It's needed to be a CPA or even just a regular old accountant but you can be a bookkeeper w/o an accounting degree

Oh my goodness! That’s truly amazing. The accountant I’m working with is incredibly kind. He took the time to sit down with me during his slow hours and provided me with a one-on-one lesson. It’s like having a free accounting lesson!

This is honestly a great skill. A lot of small nonprofits do bookkeeping in house, plus the ability to understand financial statements is critical for anyone in leadership roles. You’re going to get great skills and experience from this.

Plus he will teach me taxes during tax season. ☺️ I’m still hoping to get a 2nd job. Hopefully remote.
