Question/Recommendation Anyone else live very close to a large homeless camp?

I hope this post doesn't get too controversial, but it's getting to a point where I no longer want to work in my garden when I'm home alone. More people have been approaching our home lately. Me, my partner, and even his mom on separate occasions have been asked for things. We've had multiple things stolen, mostly small, but with kids things get left outside.

Do you have a homeless camp within a block or two of your home, and if so, how do you deal with it?

I've always wanted one. I currently have 2 elderly cats and one very active senior cat and my partner doesn't want another animal. Financially it'd be hard.

I'm gonna be frank, do you know how much a dog costs? It's actually quite cheap. I have a large dog and the only recurring expense is really his food which is like $50/month and fle/tick meds for another $20 or so. Everything else is here and there.

I googled it out of curiosity and it looks like most people are spending between $125-$200/month all in for food + insurance + meds.

Also my pit bull is very great with my cats if that is a concern you have about getting a dog with cats. He's grown up with them and we've not had any issues (3.5 years together).

Vet bills are expensive though. Medical emergencies do happen and they can easily cost upwards to $500-$1000. Especially as dogs age. Boarding dogs is also expensive in the event you need to travel. Going away for the weekend? You have to budget at least an extra $120-$150 for the boarding.

It is expensive. I have a sponsor for my 19 year old foster otherwise I couldn't afford it. Her last vet visit was $200. The one time I ended up at the emergency vet on a Saturday, it was filled with dogs that mostly ate things they shouldn't have. I was surprised.

Thats why I included insurance in that monthly cost. That's for the vet. So yes vet costs are included in the price i listed.

And yes boarding is expensive you are totally right, but also a lot of people have family that will do dog watching for them. Either way I have no clue how often OP would need boarding. But I can say in my case, even with most of my family being out of state so im flying out often, we usually only board our dog a few nights a year so the total cost of boarding isn't really a whole lot per year, maybe a few hundred.

Boarding also falls in line with other expenses I can't really know or not such as having a special needs dog or training. Obviously training is a totally optional expense, I know some people go all in on training and others don't do any at all. It kind of depends on the dog.

So yea, $125-$200 seems to be the typical monthly expense for the dog all things considered.
