The only venomous snake in Raleigh is the copperhead and they are less likely to swim than most of our other snakes. Not saying it's impossible, but watersnakes are way more common in our creeks and rivers than copperheads.

They are in one isolated swamp near Wendell but not Raleigh. You're either talking about those or you may have mistaken the IDs. Do you have pictures?

The best place to see them, which is still not guaranteed, is Robertson Millpond. It's a park with paddling trails through a cypress swamp.

Ummm, how many of your irifices are protected? And your bare skin?
Water moccasins and rattlesnakes …
Yellowjackets …
Rabid raccoons …
Don’t y’all worry about getting Hep B from being in unclean water?
Just one rotting possum upriver … and you got splashed in the eye!
Or that thing that’s up here from Florida, now?
Not the gators. The little thing. Meeba?
Of course, I sure do appreciate all y’all doing that! Admirable and brave!
But I tell you what, I don’t think I could do any up-close work.
I’d be more than happy to remotely control a drone or a digger.

No moccasins or rattlesnakes in the area, yellow jackets only sting if you're near their nest which are usually not in the middle of a creek, rabid raccoons are extremely rare but just as likely to encounter on land. The water quality is definitely a concern but keeping the water out of mouths and noses is enough to eliminate that fear.

Thank you for actually answering my questions instead of just downvoting. You gave me legitimate answers to real questions.
How is it determined that there are no rattlesnakes or moccasins in that area? Or no just no snakes at all?
Is the snakes’ absence merely ‘in the very small area humans are working in, at this particular time, because all the hullabaloo chased the snakes off’?
Or ‘this part of the river is too polluted for them/their prey to survive’?
I didn’t know that an area could be considered free of snakes without the use of flamethrowers.

It's determined by the fact they've never been seen here and this isn't their usual habitat. Moccasins like specific kinds of swamps and found more towards the coast and farther south. There's one spot in the county with moccasins and it's an isolated swamp near Wendell. Rattlesnakes are even more extreme to mountains and coast, and not found in the county at all. The only venomous snake in our area are copperheads and we've got tons of those but they don't usually prefer to swim. I've worked in/around Walnut Creek and we have a couple different species of nonvenomous watersnakes that are very common there.
