Intel A380 Redneck edition

Post image

The fan on my Intel A380went out, and I needed it immediately. So a 80mm fan of a windows 98 PC was pressed back into service. So far, so good (I pray it keeps going that well) .

And temps just shot up to 160 degrees c on the thermal camera. I guess I showed this off a bit too soon.

These components wouldn't survive 160°C. Something isn't right.

Are you by any chance pointing your thermal camera at bright, shiny surfaces? These have very poor emissivity, so can't really be measured with an infrared thermometer/camera.
One work-around is to stick a small piece of dark tape over such surfaces.

good catch, it was pointed at the shiny back of the board.

that said, the heat sink was too hot to touch, so i'm getting a new card :(

I don't think the fan was the reason for failure, but the reverse.
