You get an upvote just for the amount of effort you put into this.

That said, OP, I would like to be introduced to the monsterverse without too much of a time commitment. Where should I start? I remember an animated series about this aside from the movies too.

Well, the MonsterVerse is only a part of the Godzilla Franchise. The MonsterVerse only refers to the movies put out by Legendary Pictures (Godzilla 2014, Kong Skull Island, KOTM, soon to be Godzilla vs Kong). That's just me being nitpicky about names, but there's a LOT of material, so it's important to know what movies you're talking about.

As for getting into it, probably start at the original if you can. Gojira from 1954. It's not the most exciting movie, but it's good. Introduces the monster and themes of the franchise, stuff like that.

From there there are essentially two paths: Showa and Heisei. The Showa era is from 1955-1975, has about 15 movies. Heisei is from 1984-1995, 7 movies. I personally recommend the Heisei era. They start with a direct sequel to the original, and have more consistent and better quality and continuity, and actually has a proper ending.

After that you can basically go anywhere. The Showa era are technically all in the same continuity, but you can watch almost all of them standalone, only knowing that Godzilla is an active presence in the world. The Millenium Era are all in their own continuity (after the original) with the exception of one sequel, and can be enjoyed on their own.

And watch Shin Godzilla. It's completely it's own thing, and imo the best Godzilla movie.

I can get into books and comics next if you'd like

TL:DR. Watch the original from 1954. 99% of the rest are sequels to that

That's honestly kind of impressive. Thanks for this.

Not OP, but I can help with the MonsterVerse stuff a little bit.

There’s currently 35 Godzilla movies, but luckily the MV is only composed of 4 movies, 3 out now, 1 out next year:

  • Godzilla (2014)
  • Kong: Skull Island (2017)
  • Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
  • Godzilla vs. Kong (2020)

Each movie is only about 2 hours each, so not bad in terms of time commitment. Hope this helps!

Definitely. I know that there are a mini-pokedex worth of monsters though. How should I go about getting familiar with them?

There’s the Wikizilla website that lists pretty much all 100+ monsters that have appeared in the Godzilla movies as the fastest method, that’s all I can think of besides watching the movies manually. If you want to know more about some specific monsters, just PM me or ask on the r/GODZILLA subreddit
