Wayne Henley was 14-years-old when he 1st met Dean Corll in very early 1971. He was involved in 13 of Corll's 30 confirmed murders but was only convicted for 6 of them. Henley was an active participant in the tortures and murders and killed some of the victims himself. Corll maneuvered Henley into such a position so that he would have continued leverage over him. It was all framed as a way for EWH to finally 'become a man' and have the tools to fight back against his abusive father (who tried to kill him twice when he was 16-years-old). Corll also chiseled away at Henley's faith in God to get him to become a proper accomplice. "He did enjoy it.........it was a mental gymnastic he did with himself to deal with it," said Josh Vargas. "He told himself these were all dope fiends, people nobody would miss or go looking for. He enjoyed having the power over life and death, and he enjoyed knowing that if anyone fucked with him, he could put them in the ground. When he noticed that about himself, he began to get really disgusted."

I think that the reason Henley looks so neat and well-groomed in some of these pictures is because he wasn't involved in the murders yet. Here's an excerpt from The Serial Killer's Apprentice by Katherine Ramsland: That summer, Mary Henley observed disturbing changes in her son. He’d sometimes disappear into his room, and she could hear him cry. He’d let his appearance go, a contrast to his former meticulous attention to grooming, and he seemed impatient with religion. He also drank........a lot. She grew worried as she watched him become someone she barely recognized. Neighbors would report that they’d seen him walking unsteadily during different times of the day. He was turning into his father, in the worst ways. Once a top student with plenty of drive, he now had nothing going for him.

Though of course, none of this excuses Wayne Henley's actions.

He reminds me of Skyler Gisondo from Santa Clarita Diet.

He was ripe for brainwashing due to a hard childhood and then he met the evil older figure Dean but he crossed such depraved lines of extreme indifference to humanity, he may have been hard wired for it.

Personally, I think the 'someone always has to have a shred of evil from the beginning' line to do smth so horrific is just a pathetic safeguard against the disturbing realization that Corll's tactics for grooming accomplices could've worked on a broad range of youths (and perhaps they did). Stuff like this has happened before—in the Sylvia Lykens case and Nazi Germany, to name a few examples. Folks used to visit 'human zoos' for God's sake.

There's clear evidence that he's capable of as much empathy as the average person. He was seen as a good kid by almost everyone. EWH was a willing participant who was coerced. Just weeks before he was involved in his 1st murder, he turned himself in for a burglary he'd committed at Corll's behest. During the murders, he asked 4 ppl for help but they didn't believe him when he told them the truth. Henley's brother Paul also confirmed that once after EWH ran away from Corll, Corll invited Paul to his home as a silent threat.

Agreed. In certain kinds of cultural contexts people are more likely to be "hardwired" for being influenced to do wrong than in others. It's the basis of Zygmunt Bauman's work on the Holocaust as a product of modernity.

Not too rare when you consider all of these are pulled from the recent docudrama released about the case.

Sucks that people like this get brainwashed and manipulated into this stuff. Esp when you can imagine how much better their life could have been if they weren’t taken advantage of or became hateful and violent

He was a handsome youth! What a shame.

But he wasn't gay !!!!!

Dean was gay. Not Wayne.

He sure did love to keep pointing that out.

Looking over it I'm wondering if maybe Wayne was bisexual. I find it hard to think he would have kept bringing boys back if he didn't have a larger involvement. 200 bucks per victim isnt enough to keep doing it. Could be other motivations. Maybe some self hatred too.

You're getting this vibe bc of Mindhunter. His portrayal in it was extremely inaccurate. This post explains why: https://www.reddit.com/r/DeanCorll/comments/1m4uu4i/misrepresentation_of_henley_in_a_1976_interview/

>200 bucks per victim isnt enough to keep doing it.

That's just a misconception, he and Brooks were never paid except for the 1st time.

>I find it hard to think he would have kept bringing boys back if he didn't have a larger involvement.

He wasn't involved in the rapes, if that's what you're implying. That's what the statements of a surviving victim and Brooks indicate. Henley and Brooks were active participants in the tortures and murders though, they killed several of the victims themselves. However, Corll set the rules and Henley and Brooks didn't become involved because they shared his capital crime tendencies, he just leveraged them with the 1st murders. The sadism (and material rewards) were just opportunistic side benefits for them after they became stuck. They didn't truly have any inherent bloodlust or stake in that kind of behavior. That's what the evidence suggests.

Ah. I thought mindhunter was pretty well researched. Shame they needed to force those implications. I had already wondered but the show sort of reinforced that for me. They definitely made it a point to have him act very defensive when questioned about sexuality. Implied that it was a gay power relationship. A bit silly. But to quote carmela from the sopranos ....

'This gay stuff, it's everywhere !'.

Honestly, he did the world a favor in snuffing Corll. I think he's due a 2nd chance. Just imo.

" mama . I killed dean " . Sounds like cletus from the simpsons .

In this context? What does being " gay" mean? Coril was what is called a Chicken hawk and Wayne was a Chicken. What is often overlooked is that far more boys in that circle who were willing to " play" came and went away then we're put in the ground. RIP to all the victims.

En la serie Mind Hunter le dan una personalidad muy diferente a la que se puede ver en sus entrevistas
