Resource BEGINNER MEGATHREAD - If you're new here, USE THIS!

Hey everyone. It's been brought to my attention that a lot of people just starting out don't know where to navigate. I want everyone to have a positive experience here, and I don't want people who are new to get discouraged because of being overlooked. This is why I created this megathread. It's for beginners to come here and post or ask questions about things they are unsure of. This can range from things like "What is the best way to get started," to "What are some good vocal warm-up exercises I should be doing?"

BEFORE you even ask a question though, go read the FAQ's thread first.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're wondering if you can sing, the answer is YES!

If you're wondering if you should take lessons, the answer is YES!

Most everyone can be taught to sing, even if you don't have the natural ability. Singing is a learned skill! There are plenty of people here that can help you on your journey, but it's difficult to help you if we don't know what you're looking for.

If you're wondering what voice type you have or what notes you can hit, I would say it doesn't really matter at your stage. What matters is that you strive to sound good and sing correctly without hurting your voice.

Should you practice? YES! Everyone should always practice a skill they want to develop, no matter how great they are at it. We never stop learning, and you should always strive to be better if this is something you want to take seriously.

I've made a "Beginner - Please Be Gentle" user flair, as well as a "Beginner" post flair. USE THEM! It can help people know you are a beginner, and that you may not just be coming in here expecting everything to be handed to you.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMMEDIATE TIPS:

  • First off, READ THE RULES!!! They are here for a reason. If you make a post that breaks the rules, it's going to get removed. I don't want that for you. Our rules aren't super in-depth, so just read them please.
  • Check out the daily/weekly themes. They're super fun, and it might cover what you're looking for.
  • Also check out the Posting Guidelines.
  • We even have a guideline for "Just Starting Out" in the sidebar. Read it. Use it! It WILL help you! It has a cool WIKI for singing basics. It will be helpful. Read it!
  • Check out the FAQ's thread! It will probably answer some of the questions you have. It even features Beginner Questions!
  • Upload direct content. Don't post links from YouTube or Google Drive. We have a feature to upload direct content, straight from your phone or computer.
  • Remember, you get out of this sub what you put in. If you come in expecting all the answers to be handed to you without being willing to put in the work, you're not going to have a good experience. This applies to life in general.

HELPFUL VIDEOS:

Below are some helpful videos for vocal exercises, courtesy of u/DwarfFart!

  • For males (Tenor, Baritenor, Baritone), start here.
  • For females (Soprano, Mezzo, Alto), start here.
  • Then, move onto Airflow exercises here, and then follow on through the series!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use this thread to engage with others to help you learn and get a good sense of direction. I PROMISE you will have a better experience if you put some work in yourself, and you will have THAT much more sense of accomplishment.

This megathread is a work in progress. Feel free to give suggestions for its structure! I encourage it. I work a full time job, so it's going to take a little bit to get this going to where I want it to be!

Conversation Topic Singing into a mic is changing EVERYTHING

By singing into a mic I can finally hear myself while I sing.

I’ve always been breathy with a lot of strain and would sing my voice out within an hour or two of singing.

Singing into a mic has resulted in using significantly less air, exponentially better chord closure, and vowels that actually sound rich and full.

At last I can sing like I speak and the coordination feels like I have found my voice alas.

Not to mention by vibrato started kicking in (I’ve been training voice for 4 years now and it’s been uphill)

Has anybody else experienced this?

I’ve also sang into a mic that feeds into headphones and that’s even more potent.

EVERYTHING IS IMPROVING.

Question Can any average person (or one that is not naturally vocally talented) be taught (or trained) to be a decent or competent singer?

I've always wondered if one needs some level of natural talent to be able to be a decent singer. Thanks

Conversation Topic What are the LEAST singer-friendly songs you've heard?

The songs which have the absolute hardest uncomfortable range to sing in, the hardest intervals, the longest phrases to hold, the shakiest melodies most unnatural melodies out of the drawer, the hardest techniques and lyrics that makes you go "That's a nightmare to sing!", that don't give much space to breathe, that don't allow even the most impressive showy singers to sing easily or songs that don't allow to show off. What are songs that as a singer, you consider as a big "No no!". It's not about difficulty but about how the song's written, if you're a singer that likes to add difficulty but either you can't because the song's designed for storytelling/too restrictive or the song's written to be a nightmare to sing comfortably

Question Not sure if I am right to put it this way but isn't singing mostly just talking with melody?

Upvotes

When we talk we use our usual voice when we shout or do whatever with it we change the way we use our voice and so this concept should be applied to singing too in the same way. If we try to do anything we usually don't do with our voice when talking normally in singing it just merely reflect off so if you don't speak softly but sing softly you are just not audible so all you need to do is to just be loud and there you go and so on. If it helps take a lyric and speak it instead of singing with melody and then later sing with melody and it shouldn't be such a difficult feat but people seems to think singing is a high level skill or something which is what I don't get it and most of these people make voice they normally don't when chatting to other in their singing session.

Beginner - Please Be Gentle How do you stop from getting emotional when you sing?

I love sad songs--think they're beautiful, actually. The problem is, some of the most beautiful songs are the saddest ones, the ones that hit closest to home--I can't stop myself from getting choked up on these, which I'm sure you can tell ruins the vibe of the song past that point.

How do you keep the song seperate from the emotions without it coming out soulless or bland?

Question How is singing suppose to feel?

How are things like breath support, proper technique and singing in general suppose to feel? (Sorry if this is a dumb question)

I'm at a point where I feel like I understand what I'm suppose to do, I just don't know how to do it and it leaves me at this state where it feels like im talking in a melody rather than singing. I can't get a teacher to help so any advice is really helpful to me!

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Singing into microphone.

Hello, I have a microphone that I connect to audacity and sing into it while wearing headphones.

There's a little delay despite adjusting the buffer, and I find it extremely confusing. I am unable to sing this way. I don't understand how people do it?

What app can I use to hear my vocals live through the mic? It'd be nice if in the app you can also apply some effects live.

EDIT: I found reaper but I still get confused by listening my voice through the headphones and external sound. How do I manage it?

Question how exactly do i sing better?

i know you guys get this question a lot but all i see is “just practice everyday” but what do i practice? these videos are confusing to me and when i just sing i strain a lot, i sound like im talking and its just very bad. i cant afford a vocal coach at all either. this is just very difficult to me i especially lost motivation the second i sing because im just terrible. is it all just talent?

Question Is this a good progressive plan to eliminate tongue tension

Upvotes

So I learned to first start by pulling the tongue out from the back to give it a stretch, but don’t make any noise, just stretch until the twitching and tension from the stretch stops. And then start to sing songs on singular vowels. And once that works then start singing songs with words with tongue pulled out.

Follow up question: when doing step 1 (stretches with no noise) should I do that for let’s say 30 minutes and then don’t sing or do anything else that day so I don’t retrain the bad muscle memory? For the singing on vowels and words I can do multiple songs but for the first step I’m not sure how to tackle it

Conversation Topic Help how do I speak louder?

I know this is about singing but i have no where else to turn to. How do I have a voice that "carries" in large crowds? Ive always struggled my whole life with being heard. Its so frustrating always being asked to speak up all the time or having to repeat yourself. It stops you from forming any meaningful connections too because how can anyone want to talk to me when im constantly repeating myself like an idiot? Ive tried every youtube video, speaking from my diapghram, blah blah blah. I feel like i have no control over my voice and its really impacting me now. most youtube videos want to make u do outlandish voice excercises and they help temporarily but i cant do voice excercises every time i speak especially in public. nothing seems to stick and i always find myself reverting to my stupid weak ass voice where i have to repeat shit 5 times just to be heard. willing to work with a speech therapist or voice coach if anyone is willing

Question Tips For Darker Timbre at Top of Range (Trans)

Upvotes

Hello 👋

I’m a trans woman with a number of years of high school choral training but very limited academic vocal knowledge. Apologies for the archaic and non-scientific vocal terms I fall back on.

I’d describe my comfortable vocal type as a dramatic bass, but I go straight to a fairly poor soprano in falsetto. If the fates were kind, singing a low alto in a similar dramatic style is something I’d really like to do as it feels more me than trying to clean up my falsetto. I can match pitch with a few contraltos at the top of my non-falsetto range... It’s just that I sound like a faltering tenor when I do it.

Does anyone have some tips for strengthening/darkening my voice at the top of my range? I’m not optimistic about getting much higher than where I am with any stability, but I’m rusty enough that I’m hoping there’s some meaningful room for improvement in the sound of what I can reach.

Conversation Topic The normalization of autotune and perception to pitchiness

Kinda sick to me how 90% of singers are overedited and it's not me exaggerating, editing is so common that now my ears is sensitive to artifacts, mixing problems, robot sounding artifacts, editing, autotuning. Personally my ear is really sensitive to editing. To me a performance that is unedited and pitchy is actually less distracting than one that has too many editing, like it's so human that somehow the pitchyness if reasonable doesn't even bother me at all and any vocal slipups is quite exciting ngl (I'm like "LIVE, IT'S LIVEEE"). I think yall forgot what real humans sound like and yall expect vocalists to be perfectly on pitch just like all these Tikt videos.
It is not possible for a human to be perfectly on pitch there is always gonna be pitch deviation and "waves" on the pitch meter (because of placement, vibrato) and yall have yo consider how much risk the singer's taking at the cost of pitch. When a singer's moving a lot, doing a lot of riffs, doing a lot of register flips, going up and down and playing with texture it is literally five times as hard to keep the pitch because first you're not only focused on pitch, you're also working with different tools and textures and airflow. Don't get me wrong pitch stability and accuracy is one of the most attractive qualities that a singer could have (even if you're belting with the most beautiful voice, if the pitch is meh then it all falls short) BUT I think that when you take out all humanity, uniqueness and what's normal about a performance and compare it to an overedited autotuned performance then... Why? And I think that's an overreaction on yall part when it's pitchy but not uncomfortable and the note is quite clear. Also I think editing, its purpose is to not being noticed and being clean. I can't recall the amount of times I've personally been edited and it's not clean, and how many times I've heard unclean invasive editing on other singers...

Also I think it has changed the perception of pitch amongst people, like I've seen completely off pitch singers and ppl say that the pitch is fine, but when the singer's really on pitch then they go to say "flat" "pitchy" "so off pitch" and I do have a relatively good ear, I memorized how every note on the piano sounds like and any note that is on a song, I know which it is and how it should sound like. So I guess people's pitch perception is somewhat too intensitified, but still off? And I feel like when a singer's on pitch (when you get a really almost perfect conveying of the melody that isn't dissonant with the instruments) I feel like yall are being unnecessary with the pitch perfectionism, anything that should be fixed or improved pitch wise becomes unnecessary and should be put into other tools: inflections, textures, tone, grace notes, scoops, vocal affects (any style you use to shape your natural voice into anything that isn't your base tone) and it's not like singers that are considered "off pitch" are THAT off pitch just a 1/5 or 1/4 away from the note isn't distracting even 1/3, it's more a matter of consistency within the song but even then you may be perfectly on pitch literally at the right sweet middle spot, if you're off on very few you'll be called off... But I don't get why we make such a big deal of pitch, to me when tiny parts of a riff or one note is (not flat by miles) but a tiny bit off pitch it actually doesn't distract me.
Like seeing all these singer videos on Tikt it makes me crazy how overedited they are and how "pretended" their prolific singing is (the notes are straight, each note transition is sharp like a wall, they even edit vibrato out) plus how none of the comments seem to notice it and literally overpraise the singer (making odd comparisons, saying it's purely natural, "autotune needs her") it just makes me go crazy. Like don't yall hear how dry their voices sound? Editing makes reverb, resonance, sound proximity, the space sooooooo freaking dry. And when they themselves go on American Idol or sing on live stages they sound like a completely different person even though they sound great but.... Yaknow I prefer how their voices sound live by a lot than how they sound like in their videos... I know it is a wild thing to say, listening to Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, yk really prolific singers amongst the most prolific, they're not on tune 24/7 and actually I'd go as far as to say that they can be less on tune as a lot of singers that aren't as prolific. I've come to realize that singers that you see the most pitch deviation are often the most skilled ones, I don't know why this is an occurrence in my mind but I've literally realized it. I think sometimes you just have great pitch that you don't need to think about it, if it's flat then it's just a breach in my technique and my placement

Hey everyone! I am trying to regain confidence in singing and would love feedback on how my voice sounds. I know this recording is messy 😅 I heard this song by The Marias in a cafe last week and couldn't get it out of my head and this is a rough recording after I started to get the hang of it.
I'm looking for feedback on what you think might suit my voice for singing or what kind of voice you think I have. Anyways thanks and much love!

Conversation Topic I don't sing around my wife. WHY??

I'mma get straight to the punch line. I don't sing in front of my wife. I have recently learned how to express myself via free styling/spitting what ever is on my mind at the time. I uploaded a sample of my vocals. I'm struggling with an odd phenomenon of hearing myself back via monitoring. I have a post regarding it ----- https://www.reddit.com/r/singing/comments/1nc6l4e/singingrapping_w_plugins_has_fuced_me_up_am_i/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

What is this phenomenon I'm struggling with. I KNOW I'm not the only person that struggles with this.

Critique & Feedback Request (👀 TITLE REQUIREMENTS in Rule 4) Is my singing alright ?

Im not a professional singer in the slightest. The vocals I'm showing are postprocessed with some compression, but no autotune whatsoever. The other high pitched voice is again me, but with just formant shifting, to give it a sense of a duet.
