Moving into Sittard real soon

Hello ! I am going to move into Sittard real soon and I wanted to ask if you have any tips (or tricks) for living there. Also what do you think of the Wijk neighborhood (close to the city centre I suppose). Thanks !

We call it: Shittard.

The city centre is struggling with empty shops.

The park is nice

There is a nice pop podium called VOLT

If you are into bouldering or lead climbing it has both.

Easy public transportation to Heerlen and Maastricht.

For real tho, the only thing I usally do is go to Guava, get packages and then go straight back to gaming, even shopping isn't worth going outside for anymore 🙃

I play god of war and god of war Ragnarok on the ps4. My bf has a ps2 where we played the Simpsons. He also has a wii where we play wii resort and rabbits something. I have a pc where I play rdr2, disney dreamlight valley, statrdew valley, Minecraft, sims 4, the division 2 and more hahaha

Cool!!! I just went from a Xbox serie S to a ps5. You can add my psn if you want. It’s Brandito4PF. About to buy resident evil 2 remake today. Also, I saw that another shop in the city closed because of low selling.. it’s a store across blocker and Alberttheijn. I went to Maastricht 2 weeks ago. But I was all alone and it was just boring walking alone thru the city. Smoking a joint by the Maas and enjoy the sun. I still enjoy it but damn sometimes I feel alone.

You mean the casa one? If you mean that one I am honestly not suprised it closed down... It's like the xenos but triple the prices and I prefer xenos personally haha In Tilburg (where we lived a year) it was also not doing too well and too expensive (there is also a lot of shopping closing there) so I am really not that suprised tbh

That’s the exact shop🤣 I come from Roermond and even that city is much better than Sittard. Fun city and you have the outlet center.

I only go to the outlet centre when I go to Roermond hahaha

I came from a small city all the way in the North, in The Hague with the dream of the big city. What I found myself is paying 1500 euros per month in the low income area where it was noisy, a bit unsafe, lots of explosions (until later this year where they doubled down on stopping them, the authorities) and lots of problems with my accomodation from the surprise it came with bed bugs and very high taxes for one person. Here it’s super chill and a not so bad small city. It has a lot of young people (around my age) from what I saw as opposed to the small city I came from in the North where it was Silent Hill during the day and night lol

I am 23 and yeah it’s better than in the North 😂. It’s good to see a bit of activity in the streets 😂

If you don't mind me asking, where are you moving from?

Are you going to rent or buy? Do you want to live in an apartment or in a house? Will you be living alone?

Renting and I will live alone

What neighborhood are you moving to? "Wijk" literally means neighborhood in Dutch, so there is no neighborhood called Wijk in Sittard.

Ah sorry I just checked a website and it said wijk 01 as area, it’s literally in the city centre from what I see

Ah no that's okay, how could you know? City centre is the best area to live in in my opinion. Everything is there, alls shops, banks and everything you need.

If you live in the area near the train station, your best bet for groceries is either the Albert Heijn (expensive but has everything) or the Nettorama (less stuff to buy but cheaper).

One thing you should now about Sittard, is that it forms a municipality together with the neighboring city Geleen (municipality Sittard-Geleen). There is a building for the municipality in Sittard, but for many things regarding to the municipality you'll have to go to Geleen. It is very easy to go there using the bus.

Sittard isn't that big of a city and there isn't too much to do, but using the train it's 15 minutes to Maastricht, which I highly recommend for shopping or having a drink or food. Living in Sittard is quieter and cheaper than Maastricht and Maastricht is really close by, so it's a good location.

Also a good thing to know is that in this province, Limburg, people have an accent that is very different from Den Haag. Most people also speak a dialect that is very different from standard Dutch. If you are trying to learn Dutch, just know that people here speak very differently.

Try to learn some things about the history of Sittard and there neighboring cities (Geleen, Maastricht, Heerlen). It is very interesting, but it'll also help you understand the way of thinking of people here (which, just like the language, is very different from the rest of the Netherlands).

If you want to learn more, feel free to send me a DM anytime!

Unfortunatly there is not much to do in Sittard

You have the city centre, but unfortunatly a lot of shops are leaving. Every thursday and saturday there is a market on the market square. If you are into football/soccer there is a football club in Sittard that plays in the eredivisie (highest league).

Sittard basically only has the cafés, fortuna (the football club) and some events, apart from that the city itself is quite boring. Some of these events are carnaval (which is through the whole south of the country and oktoberfest. There are also some smaller events like the st joep market, the longest annual market of the country.

The city is well-located fortunatly, so you're 15 minutes from Maastricht and Roermond by train, and there is a direct train connection to Eindhoven, ''s-Hertogenbosch, Utrecht and Amsterdam. Furthermore the German and Belgian border are close, so some bigger German and Belgian cities are quite close.

I hope you will enjoy your stay in Sittard!
