No way this is real! Have you heard us speak!?
Also only other South Africans and Aussies even recognise our accent. I live overseas and everyone thinks my wife and I are Australian/British or from New Zealand.

My BIL (and best school friend) lives in New Zealand, and a Zimbabwean man recognised his accent and exclaimed "Ah, a boer!" and he couldn't stop smiling😂

I work in the middle east and many people here think I'm British.

I'm in Canada - and people confuse where I was born with South America. Might have something to do with my face but anyway Alberta Canada is not a sexy accent. Most people's accent here have less flavour than pasta water. Sounding different used to garner too much attention often negative, so I learned to hide mine then it left.
Now I don't even know what I sound like. But at least they're not asking if I'm British anymore I guess. At least Aus is in the S. Hemisphere...

I've had someone in England ask me if I was from Maritzburg based on my accent. I asked him how he could tell. He said he had friends from Durban and it sounded very similar albeit a bit more laid back.

I’m 4th gen Saffa of British origin, grew up in Debbin. I now live in Belgium, but have travelled extensively. No one, and I mean no one except another Saffa or maybe an Aussie or Pom can guess where I’m from. My accent has got quite diluted over the years while moving around. You must hear me speaking Dutch, or Vlaams…
No, you can’t call me a soutie, I’m too far removed from my ancestry.

Understandable. The kiwi accent and the saffa accent are very similar. And people tend to forget that Africa exists.
Just yesterday I was playing a MMO and I mentioned the time, to which someone promptly replied "ahh. European" 😂

they tell you that on purpose so that then go on and explain where you're from using that sexy accent.

Honestly, I have difficulties telling kiwi and ZA accents appart when I hear it without context. People who specialise in accents are generally in agreement that they are very similar.
In Far Cry 3 the islanders have a kiwi accent because the game was made mostly in NZ. I think they threw a few Saffa's in the mix just to mess with people, because I really got confused at times with those voices.

The South African born who speaks English as his mother tongue accent is much more attractive than a South African who is Afrikaans born speaking English, which is often how it is portrayed in media.
Not hating just pretty obvious.

Even though ads like that, along with most of Nando's were pulled from mainstream media (I think Nando's got a few outright banned) they still stick around and keep coming back.

I once spoke to a British friend who claimed we have a great accent. He then sent me a Manthe Ribane video, which reminded me we have plenty of accents and some of them are actually cool.

u/animal9633 2d ago
How DARE you....oh no wait, that checks out...we sound pretty terrible.
I'm even worse since I grew up consuming American and British tv shows and as a result I sound really strange, people are permanently asking me where I'm from.

What's a "South African accent"?? We've got so many different races, they're all different.
32
u/BoerInDieWoestyn 2d ago
When it comes to accents, race doesn't matter nearly as much as your home language and upbringing. Those two are often correlated with race because of how South Africa functions, but it's not a 1 to 1 relationship. In principle you're right though, we have a wide variety of all three in South Africa and it is hard to pin down what a "South African accent" is.
23
u/TaskMstr09 2d ago
Exactly. Are they talking about a heavy Afrikaans accent or the accent of a Xhosa first language speaker?
Also, you're right about "race", "home language" and "upbringing" being intertwined and all. So would it be better to say "culture" instead of "race"?

probably an Afrikaans or English South African accent, since they're the ones foreigners are most familiar with, most of our actors have, and are in most movies. specifically the ones from big cities, i don't think that foreigners are familiar with the rural boer accent

I'm sorry this list has 0 accountability because who tf has heard a New Zealander accent and though oh fuck yes 🤣😩 never in my life have I been able to take a kiwi with an accent seriously 😭🤣

To be fair. There are a lot of similarities between an English saffa and a kiwi accent. Particularly durbanites, they share some pronunciations.

This is mostly only true for native English speakers from ZA. The other language accents (like Afrikaans) don’t fair quite as well and, at least to the American ear, sound jarring and remind them of evil 007 villains. I think this stems from the Afrikaans accent being used for bad guys in movies since the 80s.
Source: More than one American.
5
u/Intrepid-Strain4189 2d ago
Like an Arnold Vosloo accent? He always plays the bad guy. I’m still trying to place a Charlize Theron accent…
3
u/FishPasteGuy 2d ago
Exactly like that, yes.
Think of:
Kruger from “Elysium”.
Coetzee from “Blood Diamond”.
Warden Drumgoole from “Lock Up”.
Ulysses Klaue from “Black Panther” and “Avengers, Age of Ultron”.
Arjen Rudd and Pieter Voratedt from “Lethal Weapon 2”.3
u/Intrepid-Strain4189 2d ago
Then there was DeCaprio in Blood Diamond, but that was supposed to be a Rhodesian accent. Quite frankly, pale folks of British origin from Zim, Bots, Nam, Eswatini and SA sound the same, to me.

Which one? The boertjie, the joburg boet, the tannie at the kerk bazaar, the home affairs lady, the fakish British accent from the person that was born in "Rhodesia", the laanie that stays next door, the guy at the tech shop that giving me a sweet deal or the skinny white boy at the jol who promises me he will "worship the ground you walk on, babygirl" even though I'm twice his size and old enough to be his mom? And that only scratching the surface of all our accents!

Southern US and New York? Nobody likes the midwestern accent or valley girl? 😆
My personal favorite is the Black New Orleans or creole accent and wherever Xavier Legette’s NC accent comes from.
