The joke prior was better, “Caitlin Clark and I share a lot in common: We’re both whites from the Midwest who have nailed a bunch of 3’s”

5.8k

u/Tsquared10 Jul 17 '25

I preferred his one saying "4 time WNBA all star Brittany Hicks here. Camera cuts to her and applause I'm just joking around that's actually my friend's wife. I knew none of you knew WNBA players."

u/enjoytheshow Jul 17 '25

The shot of McCusker dying laughing next to her was the moment of the night

315

u/AsperaAstra Jul 17 '25

I'm a hockey fan pretty exclusively, who is McCusker? Wnba official?

629

u/bwurtsb Jul 17 '25

McCusker is Shane's longtime friend and co-host on his podcast. I think it was his wife.

61

u/Heratism Jul 18 '25

You would be correct that is his wife

42

I don’t know, go watch when Peyton Manning hosted, his opening was hilarious and the crowd was into it. Granted, that was a while ago.

65

u/Breezyisthewind Jul 17 '25

Peyton has a folksy charm to him that makes it feel less harsh. Also he’s one of them so it doesn’t feel like it came from some dumb comedian. Also Peyton made fun of himself plenty, which always goes down well.

A bunch of media personalities and athletes that get paid so much money they are all woefully detached from reality? Makes sense.

133

u/stenebralux Jul 17 '25

It is a weird tradition that we have.. "come to our award TV show and let us profit from your image for free, but before we honor you let's have a professional comedian roast you and your peers live on camera, sometimes with some harsh truths"... but dumb jocks that make a lot of their money by projecting "being cool" to their fans is probably the most complicated target.

164

u/Dr-McLuvin Jul 17 '25 edited Jul 17 '25

So many of them do NOT like getting made fun of. Actors can usually laugh it off. This is like a room full of Will Smiths.

21

u/bostonbedlam Colorado Avalanche Jul 17 '25

Directors often comment about how sensitive actors can be to any criticism too; I just think they’re typically a little better media-trained and usually don’t show it when the cameras are pointed at them. They can be just as bought into their own ego and take themselves too seriously as athletes, but will laugh either because the comedian is well-known or because the camera is on.

Unless you’re Jo Koy at the Golden Globes. Pretty much everyone agreed that he wasn’t funny and they weren’t going to pretend otherwise.

u/TaxLawKingGA Jul 17 '25

This. Remember how mad Hollywood got at Chris Rock when he was making fun of movie studios for putting Jude Law in movies? Sean Penn felt that it was necessary for him to respond to it while he was supposed to be giving an award. Just one of many reasons I stopped watching award shows years ago.

61

24

u/enjoytheshow Jul 17 '25

I just wish Shane would bask in the silence a little more on some of these bomb jokes. Pull a Norm and just let the crowd feel so fucking uneasy that it makes it funnier. He did this on his SNL too, where he looked at everyone and said “oh, you didn’t like that joke.” Like everyone knows they didn’t like it. Embrace it. Makes it funnier.

I think the other one about threes was funnier but social commentary on this one is 100x hotter. Everyone needed to hear it.

It just irks me that it implies (imo) Clark is the instigator and looking for fights? Based on my WNBA knowledge, which I'll admit isn't the best, she's the target and does not love fighting.

20

u/Srirachaballet Jul 17 '25

Producer: Did Druski laugh? Ok we’re good…

402

u/illini02 Jul 17 '25

Who is Druski?

I mean, I know who he is. I've seen him places. But like, what does he do? Is he a barstool guy? A podcaster?

553

u/woahdude12321 Jul 17 '25

He made his name making good skits on ig during covid now he’s just kinda druski not even sure

110

u/HilariousMax Jul 17 '25

is he the fat one that gets fake offended when people make fat jokes or is that the other guy?

122

u/Wajina_Sloth Jul 17 '25

You’re thinking of CaseOh (big white guy who plays video games).

59

u/ElectricGhostMan Jul 17 '25

that's the other guy. Druski is like a PT Barnum type aggregator for a specific type of culture segment. He has his funny moments but I think most of the laughs come from some of the people he brings on to his platforms and his interactions with them.

83

u/No-Tangerine2171 Jul 17 '25

PT Barnum type

Is that your roundabout way of saying he owns slaves?

7

u/ElectricGhostMan Jul 17 '25

Most of my understanding of PT Barnum is based off the movie The Greatest Showman featuring Hugh Jackman. Pardon my gross ignorance to a lot of the atrocities and inhumane conditions he probably did but the exploitation off a lot less fortunate or desperate peoples by putting them on stage to showcase a talent or interact with each other on various levels is more of a relation to that aspect than any other I can think of.

He's Zoomer Ryan Seacrest. He started as a streamer and does a bunch of podcasts n stuff.

14

why is ‘The Decision’ supposed to be viewed as this huge moral failing for everyone involved?

Tacky? Sure. A bit arrogant? Sure.

But it was literally just an interview that raised money for children’s charities.

15 years later I still don’t understand the criticism people level at LeBron and ESPN for that. You’d think they invited all the kids there and gassed them or something the way people talk about that day.

It’s not like it was forced on everyone, it was one of the biggest free-agent stories ever, and they gave it a bigger platform because of that. They didn’t fabricate the hype. But now people want to act shocked that something like that could ever be allowed to happen.

Crazy.

7

u/DraymondBeanKick Jul 18 '25

The problem with The Decison from a morality standpoint is that he didn’t pick the Bulls.

10

u/DFWPunk Los Angeles Dodgers Jul 17 '25

I was going to say the same thing. It was going to be done at a press conference anyway, and there were going to be disappointed fans no matter what. At least his way resulted in some good being done.

Similar to Hot Ones inviting him on and then editing/removing like half of the interview because they got Shane Gillis answers from Shane Gillis.

154

u/thelingeringlead Jul 17 '25

That was so disappointing. Like even the worst episodes get at least 5 more minutes in them. Shane answered a lot of questions very curtly without much humor, as part of the joke, but it was clear some of his answers were much longer. When he talked about it on the super secret podcast he definitely didn't seem surprised lol.

Most of these athletes stopped paying attention in class in 10th grade, add in all the head injuries and we’re lucky if they can string together a complete sentence

I'm kind of meh on Shane Gillis. I"ve seen some of his stuff I thought was hilarious, and some wasn't really for me. But, this showed me that athletes really are the most sensitive people on the planet. Some of his monologue was hilarious, and they acted like he was making jokes about kililng babies or something

u/DinkandDrunk Jul 17 '25

Time honored tradition to offend athletes. Although I’d argue nobody has done it better than Norm.

262

u/Darkhawk007 Jul 17 '25

Nobody takes themselves more seriously than people who play for a living.

u/Dry_Row_7523 Jul 17 '25

Caitlin Clark went on SNL and did an entire segment making fun of how WNBA is an easy target for comedians so I think she's used to it

34

u/DervishSkater Jul 17 '25

Well, in some ways the wnba is bringing it upon themselves. They’re making themselves an easy target

The jaded perspective that only comes through trauma like being a degenerate gambler! RIP Norm.

People who have had their asses kissed since they were in high school don’t know what to do when someone is calling them out for their bullshit.

61

u/ILookLikeKristoff Jul 17 '25

Yeah most of the people in this room have been repeatedly told they're special, better, different, etc since they were like 12.

Seriously go look up NFL players middle school film. Most of them are already bigger than the adult coaches on the sidelines and literally like 1.5x the size and speed of the next best kid on the field.

From parents to coaches to recruiters, these kids are spoiled silly from childhood on.

10

u/RegHater123765 Jul 17 '25

Don't forget that they then go to College, and many of them are told that they're special and that the rules for students (you have to go to class, you have to study, you have to maintain this GPA, etc.) don't apply to them.

I think people are sensitive about this because CC doesn't fight people, she just gets attacked while trying to play.

21

u/Twittenhouse Jul 17 '25

She can't fight but you ought to see her box.

I've seen some of Shane's stuff a little clips of his standup. I definitely think he excels at sketch comedy. His Gilly and Keyes stuff is so funny and some of the snl bits he wrote when he guest syarred were great.

u/Zykium Jul 17 '25

The ISIS Toyota sketch is one of my favorite sketches.

The afterparties joke at the end was pretty funny too

u/MHprimus Jul 17 '25

Why can’t you find a video of his entire monologue? Just shorts or cut up bits. I want the whole thing

35

u/PowRightInTheBalls Jul 17 '25

The 2nd Youtube video that comes up if you Google "Shane Gillis ESPYs" is the full monologue so it doesn't seem like you tried very hard.

25

u/MHprimus Jul 17 '25

My same search results: A list of shorts. Then top video is Tush Push 3:23 2nd Go birds 2:01 Another list of shorts 3rd: Best of Monologue 1:40 Another single short Gillis Monologue Takaways from a pod 11:04 Gillis on Kimmel…

Maybe… just maybe… YouTube doesn’t send the same results to the same people. I’ll go upvote the guy that sent a link & move on with my day.

Druski is one of those guys that just randomly became famous one day. Like i wouldn't be able to tell you about any of his work or where I heard of him from but he's instantly recognizable lol

16

u/PB_livin_VP Jul 17 '25

These comments are so fucking serious.

10

u/localtuned Jul 17 '25

I got permabanned from R/wnba because I genuinely asked if she had any records. LMAO. The mods of wnba must hate her. Shit is so funny.

u/fraghead5 Jul 17 '25

This is the first espys I care about since its inception, so whoever picked Shane to host was smart.

13

u/LiquorEnthusiast Jul 17 '25

Peyton Manning has a really good Espy's opening monologue if you haven't watched it yet.

3

u/tilldeathdoiparty Jul 17 '25

I didn’t even know the ESPYs were still a thing, I’ve only seen clips from Norm hosting and now this.

You think at Waffle House she'll finally get some help from her coworkers?

Cuz I've seen the footage, and like 99% of her team doesn't give a fck when she gets blatantly fouled.

this joke would be funny if CC actually fought players or something but she just gets beat up on by players all the time. the most she's ever done is push someone away lol

38

u/Vsx Jul 17 '25

Yeah that's true but it works again if you consider that the employees at the waffle house are also getting attacked for no reason while just trying to do their job.

u/NotASmoothAnon Jul 17 '25

Thats actually why it's funny. Because no one reasonably thinks she does that, but that's what a small group would want you to believe.

13

u/otokkimi Jul 17 '25

I think it can go both ways, because that's the reason why I didn't find it funny. There was too much of a disconnect in my mind.

Who is that group? I've literrally never heard anyone try and go that angle. The last time it was 2 white women beating her up. Its clear the wnba is just a mean girls club, and the rest of the world is sick of it.

You know how sometimes there’s a comedian that people like but you just don’t see it. That’s how it is for me with this dude.
