It definitely wouldn't surprise me just look how much it impacted golf when they got involved

123

u/cjcfman 20d ago

Especially if they adopt a soccer or a college basketball model. Like who wouldnt want to make like 100 mill just playing every weekend compared to a nba schedule

79

u/BigLan2 20d ago

They've attracted some big names to the Saudi league, but they're mostly coming to it as a "retirement league" and the teams are far from being competitive.

From a players perspective though, I don't know how you pass up the mountain of cash they're offering.

It’s coming to US soccer. USL is going to a pyramid in 2027. Promotion and relegation. Hopefully it bumps out MLS.

30

u/raptearer 20d ago

It won't, MLS honestly doing better than USL, and it's already a tier down in the US Soccer pyramid so it won't replace it unless MLS just straight collapses, which I just can't imagine anytime soon. This isn't MLR.

10

u/hella_sj 20d ago

Do people really think there are people that don't watch MLS specifically because of lack of pro/rel?

I can't wait for USL to actually try it to see if it makes any difference. I doubt it will, but it's good that someone is trying.

9

u/TonyzTone 20d ago

Yeah, pro/rel supporters don’t realize that system only works when there is more interest in the sport than there are ways to keep realistically schedule organized teams of equal competition.

The system developed in Europe where there was so much interest in the sport that sometimes singles neighborhoods had multiple competing clubs with supporters. Those supporters weren’t just fans with scarves but literally dues paying members cheering on their friends and neighbors agains the rivals around the corner.

A few decades of that and it was just too unruly to have everyone playing everyone so divisions were developed for scheduling purposes, and to keep well resourced teams who could travel across country to compete from wasting time with unserious hobbyists.

Support in pro/rel systems has to be so deep that you’ll still fill the stands even if you’re an amateur club.

6

u/RPO777 20d ago

The only American sport where Pro/Rel would be realistic is probably American Football. Even then tradition would make it very difficult, and the economics make it impossible.

That being said, the Cleveland Browns being relegated to College Football, with the Ohio State Buckeyes replacing them would be kinda hilarious.

u/BeefInGR 20d ago

It won't bump out MLS, but it absolutely will wake them up. Looking at losing access to Detroit, Oakland, Indianapolis, Tampa, Sacramento, San Antonio, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Milwaukee/Madison and possibly Phoenix. Not to mention teams in Orange County, Omaha and possibly Maine in the future who will eat market shares of long established MLS sides. Plus, an option for MLS substitutes to be first team players.

It doesn't have to topple MLS to force MLS to change.

They want to take over every major league and barely anyone can say no... How can you with billions thrown in your face. Takes a man with serious morals to say no.

20

u/LeftHandedScissor 20d ago

Because the product is multitudes inferior even with all the money in the world. Turns out that no matter how much money you throw at athletes it's tough to get fans to buy into a league that has no history or tradition.

11

u/JerHat 20d ago

Yep. Look at LIV golf… has anyone ever actually seen an event?

I see more of their golfers doing stuff on YouTube than I see of them playing actual competitive golf.

12

u/tenclubber 20d ago

I have stopped on it for a few seconds several times out of curiosity. It's not a good product. It's closer to the golf event at the end of Happy Gilmore 2 than the PGA tour.

Building the Maxi league?

218

u/AchtungCloud 20d ago

Isn’t it weird that the plot of that movie was influenced by LIV…but then had cameos from PGA and LIV golfers?

96

u/FakingHappiness513 Chelsea 20d ago

Seemed like a lot of the full swing guys were in it, could have been part of the Netflix contract.

51

u/ironictitle 20d ago

Yes, so odd to see Bryson and Brooks on the Tour Team. Someone in another thread mentioned those golfers were featured in Full Swing which was distributed by Netflix (Like HG2) so maybe it was a contract thing with that.

28

u/Dense_Worldliness_57 20d ago

I still find it strange that their Saudi overlords and liv contracts would allow them to disparage liv in such a blatant manner.. even though they were portrayed as part of the the good guys they were still playing against the upstart tour baddies. A bit odd all round I reckon

31

u/TURKEYSAURUS_REX 20d ago

Almost like the LIV guys don’t actually care about that tour and will do anything for money.

6

u/CitizenCue 20d ago

The LIV guys don’t care about LIV - they enjoy the money, not the league.

3

Isn't there already a competing league?

149

u/purplenyellowrose909 20d ago

People are trying to blow this up and milk it into a LIV vs PGA esque rivalry.

They're essentially just competing to get the top Euroleague teams into an S tier European league and have them play each other more often. I highly, highly doubt this affects the NBA and results in like Anthony Edwards or Luka Doncic going overseas to play for Berlin or some shit.

50

u/taskmetro 20d ago

That is what the NBA is doing, not the LeBron venture.

12

u/cujukenmari 20d ago

LIV was big news when it first started and they made all those big signings but I don't think it's really done anything since besides make the golfers who signed on much richer.

It's not about making a profit in the new league, as we've seen with LIV golf. They will light $1B on fire just to get a seat at the table, and legitimize themselves with American sponsors, politicians, etc. Nobody wants to be a dance partner with the Saudis with their current reputation but they're trying to change the perception through legitimizing themselves in the sports world. It's a massive investment but ultimately a tiny percentage of the PIF fund, and it's done very strategically. Not saying it'll work but that's the idea. In 10 years they plan to be knee deep in the sports landscape

Apart from how well it may or may not do, this is bad for basketball and everyone who cares about it. The NBA is also now considering doing the same thing either first or to directly compete with it. This just means the existing great leagues and teams in Europe with fans and histories and rivalries are going to be swallowed by billionaires coming in and creating a new soulless league nobody cares about. It'd be one thing if it was like NBA Africa where they're trying to grow basketball in a place that needs more infrastructure for the sport, but this is not that.

How to turn $5b into $500m

14

u/stockmonkeyking 20d ago

Who gives a shit? It’s $5b going back into economy rather than sitting in Saudis lap or whoever that’s funding it.

Let em plot

→ More replies (1)

72

u/mnmr17 20d ago

5B investment seems like chump change to the kind of investment you would need to make a competing league. Hell the lakers alone just sold for 10B this summer and that’s only 1 of the 30 teams.

19

u/dukie5021 20d ago

They sold a 50% stake of the franchise at a $10b valuation. So the buss's sold their share for $5b.

Edit : not that it matters, the Lakers are still worth the entire amount that this league is being started with. But that headline/story was always misleading.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Sine_Habitus 20d ago

Well they aren't buying the teams though. They are competing with them. They see the 10b price tag and think that is way too much. This would be like if you saw eggs for some crazy high price, and then decided to buy your own chickens... Even if you can't compete with the factory chickens, you might be able to over time and you don't need to build a whole factory to start.

Waste of money. They're not going to get the star players to jump ship until they are way past their prime. They're already making $50+ million in the NBA a year, not including endorsements. They'll get some 2nd string guys, guys on the downside of their career and guys who didn't make the NBA, then what's going to be the attraction? Maybe a 4 point shot? The novelty will wear off in a month and it'll tank like the original XFL.

3

u/brickbacon 20d ago

This isn’t a serious proposal. Five billion sounds like a lot, but it’s not much when you are talking about players who are making $50+mm/year.

The real goal here seems to be twisting someone’s arm into letting him buy an NBA franchise (expansion or otherwise), or to get in on the ground floor of the new European NBA league that will start soon. I think once the NBA is able to wrest Real Madrid and a couple other from the current EuroLeague to launch their own product.

Is this mental illness?

Do it! This is going so well for LIV Golf.

$6 bil but some of these players contacts already hit 9 figures. How will they even compete? They’ll need wholly new players as the ones receiving big money and attention won’t leave their secure spot for a place in LeBron’s Flimsy League.

Hasn’t LeBron seen Happy Gilmore 2?

u/Dramatic-County-1284 20d ago

Damn Bron is skipping the minority owner arc and going straight to league owner. Wonder why Jordan didn’t think of this?

2

u/CaptainQuasi 20d ago

Wouldn’t they have to strike a deal with those same nba owners to use the arenas?

2

u/Ninestonine 20d ago

So nothing to worry about.

Hope there are no skeletons in LeBron’s closet

Why would you want to watch a league with a few super teams in it? Boring. They talked about a similar thing in European football with the big teams with a rival league. It might work with golf.

u/free_billstickers 20d ago

Didn't ice cube already do this?

2

u/human1023 20d ago

This can be good.

They need a 1 vs 1 league.

2

u/fjtblessed 20d ago

I’m assuming they’re trying to make the equivalent of the European Super League but NBA
