Playlist Question / Discussion Do you remove songs from your playlists?

I have 1 main playlist with a ton of songs. At a certain point, there are songs I always skip and I'm not sure if I should remove them or keep skipping. What if I want to go back to it? Should I put it in a playlist of songs I don't listen to anymore, so I have it for later in case? I know it doesn't matter that much, but idk what the best way is.

I have a dropouts playlist for each year (eg dropouts 2025) so every time I remove a song from my playlist it goes in there. I listen to the old ones sometimes and the nostalgia is insane, sometimes the songs get added back.

Oooh, I like that idea!

For sure. Some go to another playlist, some just go

I never delete from my main playlist, it acts as a sort of musical diary. Even songs I'd never listen to again, I enjoy going back and trying to put myself in the frame of mind that would have saved that song.

Having said that, I constantly build smaller playlists from my main that I actually listen to on a daily basis.

I remove about a couple to a few songs depending if i’ve heard them in a while or if necessary

I usually add every songs I've liked over the years into one big playlist and make smaller playlists based on what I had already added on the big one. So, if I am ever in the mood to listen to a song, I can still remember it and find it in my big playlist. Some songs I go through phases where I love them and then get tired. So it's nice to be able to have the option to go back when I'm in the mood.

In my entire history on spotify, I have only deleted one song thanks to R. Kelly. And that was only replaced by a pirated version for pretty obvious reasons.

Sometimes I create 2 Playlists for the same Genre one with my “main” songs and one with all of the tracks I hear.

1 Main Playlist people will forever baffle me.

Sure I have a master list, but I’m typically in the mood for something specific and if not, I’ll just skip through the master list for the random brain scratch of the moment 🤪

I know I’m a bit extra but I definitely have over 50 playlists total… plenty to do more curation with. And yes, I still listen to most of them!! Like 75% or more!

I never remove songs from the master list. Ever.

The main reason I have one is because I have a specific taste that's similar genres (at least to me). The only songs I skip are ones I have had for years and only because I'm tired of them.

I have one playlist that has every song I’ve ever heard. That’s how I preserve songs. Then I have my main playlist, which is still big, but I can freely add and remove songs from as my tastes change (which is not very often)

I rarely remove them completely, more often than not they just go to a new playlist

Only under special circumstances. I keep songs for the novelty and yes, one day I might go back. So even though I skip them every time, I can't remove them.

I make very specific playlists, and sometimes a song I added just doesn't fit.

So off it goes.

my spotify insists on playing "u smile" by justin bieber every time i shuffle it. i haven't removed it yet because it was a childhood favorite but every time it comes on i get angry now. im about one play from taking it out of my liked songs (i have over 3000 songs that i play on shuffle and spotify plays it nonstop. why they think i like it so much i have no idea)

Do you skip it every time or listen to it? I think if you always listen to it, they are more inclined to put it at the top of your shuffle, but maybe I'm wrong.

always immediately skip

I’m old so for me playlists can only be 90 minutes. I sometimes swap songs to make it better.

Finally, I comment I understand! I’m even worse. I treat playlists like 80s mixed tapes. No master list. Just a bunch of playlists with specific genres of music, moods, or some other specific reason (ex: “traffic jams” or “girl rock”). I constantly delete and add stuff. Maybe it’s because I’m old and remember having to buy a whole album for just one song. Steaming is so awesome to me because I’m still amazed I can just listen to one song without buying the whole record/tape/CD!

If I find I'm constantly skipping a song I will delete it from the playlist.

I remove accidents. Like when I accidentally add a like “2014 Extended Bonus Addition” album, I’ll have to go through and remove nonsense. Like I said on another post, I don’t need the instrumental track for “Judy is a Punk” or seven outtake versions of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” or whatever. For some bands those kinds of things are worthwhile, but others it’s just filler.

I also accidentally added The Who’s entire studio catalogue when I meant to add an album and a couple songs, so I’ve been gradually removing that over time.

I just have one giant playlist that I shuffle like a personal radio station. It has 3,082 (I have to remove The Who stuff, so probably closer to 3,000) tracks (204 hours of music) as of now. It’s just every piece of music/album/live show I’ve ever heard and specifically enjoyed.

I remove songs and playlists all the time. I have no mater list. As I read these comments I think my Spotify style is a result of my many years of making mixed tapes in the 80s/90s. They had limited space and when I got bored of the mix, I taped over it.

For me, I drop songs un and out of my niche, weird, very curated playlists after I’ve skipped them multiple times in said playlist. I still maintain my giant master playlists, or I’ll remake a playlist and add numbers to it (example: Road Jams and Road Jams 2.0)

I do. I put them in a different playlist and sometimes add them back in.

I only delete accidental duplicates in my playlist. I do skip a lot of songs, but then decide to play them another day. It just depends on my mood.

I have been going through everything and removing songs. I even reorganized my playlists and consolidated them. I had too many lists. I didn’t even remember a lot of the songs or why I added them. I listened to each one before removing them.

Absolutely, I’m not gonna keep skipping songs I don’t want to hear forever 😂 they can always be added back later if needed

Yes! I update mine at least once a month! I cycle them out or move them around d

No if a single song isn't vibing I delete the whole playlist lmao, I constantly make new playlists. Honestly they last 6 hours or so with me 🫠🫠🫠 1 lasted 3 days before, I was shook!! I just made one today called Vitamin D(rops)... I almost deleted it but I decided to remove all the songs but 3 and hopefully add more in the future. I just gotta practice patience

It seems so hard to have so many different little playlists. Like I don't know what fits in which vibe, if you know what I mean.

Yeah there are some I've made in the past that actually worked well and I regret deleting them. One specifically I remember was a sexually themed playlist when I came across lesbian Spotify (I'm not a lesbian lolol) but ended up loving a lot of the songs. Now I want to rebuild that sort of playlist but I built it with recommended songs and it's not like it recommends me the same songs now so idk which ones actually work. It can't just be any sexual song it has to have like EMELINE vibes to it. I tried making an AI playlist but it just gave me a bunch of her songs.

the whole point of my main playlist is that i never remove a song from there so it can function as a kind of time capsule to my taste and pop music in general (unless i genuinely cant listen to someones music anymore due to their (sexually) criminal actions - looking at wilbur soot/lovejoy especially), but i admit i have deleted a couple songs from there simply because it was a mistake to add them in the first place.

That makes sense. I kind of do the same, but with the liked songs feature.

Sure. I personally either have the album saved, or I keep individual songs in my Liked playlist that operates as a big heap of bookmarks. I generally want my playlists to go on and stay on e.g. while I'm working, so if a song starts to annoy me I prune it. I recommend this way of doing things!

I have a playlist called "on hold" where I put songs I think I like, but I need to make sure. Usually they go in after just 1 listen. I also save albums as a way to remember that it's on my list to listen to.
