Playlist Question / Discussion What is 1 feature Spotify needs to add?
I think they need to add the Spatial Audio like Apple has, it’s so immersive and sounds amazing. What do you think they should add?

u/daisydxw 22d ago
A play next option instead of just adding to your queue

u/Drun555 21d ago
It's funny that they, if I'm not mistaken, actually have / had this functionality - but only on iOS

Shuffle by artist or another true random shuffler so I won't hear the same songs over and over again in my >1500 song playlist.
20
u/Corpsey_Clownshoes 22d ago
My God, right???? Seriously how hard could it possibly be to fix that "shuffle". Its infuriating.
9
u/ChillPlay3r 22d ago
Especially when there are third-party websites like spotify-shuffler.com doing a much better job. Sadly they are also not perfect and the playing order is fixed until you re-shuffle through the website.
17
u/profanityridden_01 22d ago
I noticed that in the last few weeks shuffle now likes to play the same artist 2 or 3 times in a row. It seems like every few months they make a major change to the shuffle algo.
Here's the real new feature they need to add.
A drop down to pick the type of shuffle you want. Do you want a favorites shuffle that plays the same shit, group by artist shuffle, full AI shuffle. shuffle playlist with AI suggestions
If they broke out their shuffle to be more customizable it would really be a game changer.

This!!!!! A random number generator has been around since the 1960s, so simple. yet their Algo just replays the same damn songs! Their shuffle sucks so bad.

I've heard it on my Release Radar. It sounded just like Blink 182 and the artist name had "Delonge" in it. However, no trace of a real band could be found with Google.

It's not at all a "need" but as someone who gets a lot of joy from curating playlists, I would love the option of .gif playlist covers, formatting within the playlist description, and the ability to create sections/acts/chapters within playlists.

The ability to shuffle all of an artist's work when you're on their main page. (I'm probably explaining this poorly)

I understand, to play strictly that artists discography at random
3
u/thestorieswesay 22d ago
Yes! It has the top songs by the artist in a pretty decently nonlinear order, but like .. I wanted to listen to the entire discography of an artist earlier today and I had to copy all her tracks to a playlist just so I could shuffle them. In the words of those infomercial people, "THERE'S GOTTA BE A BETTER WAY ~!"

The ability to easily report/notify devs or whomever regarding errors, like when two or more bands/artists share a name, yet are obviously not one and the same.
Hate seeing the name of a well liked band pop up with a new release only to hit play and have my ears boxed like an errant child reaping the bitter fruits of their folly.
That and an improved shuffle feature, especially when I want to dive into a particularly large playlist. When there's over 6,000 distinct tracks, I shouldn't have any repeats within a matter of minutes as has happened on numerous occasions.

Yeah the same goes for artists who have multiple pages on spotify. Joe Armon-Jones, Keyboarder of Ezra Collective, has like a dozen pages, next to his own one and I rarely get the correct notification when he is featured as a musician.

Let us "link" songs that should always be played together even on shuffle.
Like the Abbey Road medley, like Brain Stew/Jaded by Green Day and many others.

User created smart playlists…we could literally do this on iPods in the early 2000’s, the community has been requesting it for years and years on Spotify’s own forum platform and they can’t be bothered to implement it.

Lists of releases (songs and albums) that came out today/this week.
I don't want a curated weekly playlist sorted by label money, and I don't want a list of "handpicked" albums from the last few months.
I want a comprehensive list of new stuff sorted by release date and alphabet. Nothing more.
(That, or give us a date search tag that's more granular than "year".)

In the Crossfade function, Spotify needs to recognize that some songs either starts or ends (or both) with like 5 seconds or more of silence. So they should factor this into the Crossfade setting and not include that silent portion in the Crossfade duration.

More transparent statistics: I want to see how many times I've listened to a song, the amount of listens I've made per month, the total amount of time I've spent listening to music, the total number of likes that a song has and the accounts of the other people that have liked those songs. I want to see a map of the locations of the people who listen to the same music as me. I want a spotify recap I can look at every day, and it's a shame Spotify hasn't implemented it yet
A comment section on every song (they will never do this because it requires actual work on their end)
The ability to share my liked songs playlist
A better shuffle algorithm
A random song picker. Like it literally picks a completely random song from Spotify's entire database, this would be sick for finding new stuff.
A better DJ that feeds me stuff related to my taste that I haven't heard of and doesn't just regurgitate the same songs I've been listening to or feed me popular slop like Sabrina Carpenter or whatever.
Better keyboard shortcuts that are more comfortable so I can use spotify without having to use my mouse
A homepage that shows stuff I actually care about
A rating feature like albumoftheyear so I can see how much people enjoyed/disliked a song/album
Better algorithmic ways to find new music. I don't know if it's just me, but I've had a way harder time using Spotify's recommendation algorithm to find new music. Instead, I've been going through songs I like and finding collaborations with other artists and listening to their stuff. I've also been having more luck with Soundcloud these days for finding new music.
There's like a million more things Spotify could do, but choose not to. I'm thinking of jumping ship soon.

2
u/valentinocouture 22d ago
Where do I even begin on this one? First of all they need to remove all the AI bullshit they've got going on. And yes, this includes the investments in AI drone technology. This goes hand in hand with sufficient remuneration for artists' streams. And finally increase the audio quality. I'm currently experimenting with other streaming services because I'm highly disappointed with just about everything Spotify is doing. I'm afraid this is a point of no return and we're way past discussions about what they should add to their services at this point.

‘Play Next’
I don’t know why this isn’t the thing already. Sometimes I don’t want to add to my huge queue and then drag the song to the top. That’s awfully inconvenient. Just add the “Play Next” button next to “Add to Queue” ffs.

Notifications for new music releases from followed artists. I miss out on way too many releases.
Exact numbers for remaining audiobook listening hours. And audiobooks for all paid memberships.
Music videos and/or music visualizers, especially for tv apps (Roku, Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Apple TV, etc) web player, desktop app.
Honestly if Spotify wants to maintain users and quit losing people to other music streaming apps, in addition to improving the quality, they should improve the social aspect of the app:
Separate followed users and followed artists.
“Popular with friends” a playlist recommending songs that your friends are listening to lately. And a recommended for you playlist where your friends can send you songs that you might like.
Let you see who follows your playlists and give you notifications for new followers.
Separate the playlists you’ve made from the playlists made by others on your profile.
More customizable profiles: bios, social media links, pin your favorite songs/albums/artists/podcasts.
Spotify needs more human content and less AI generated junk. Music should be a social experience.

- A 5-start type rating system, instead of this "Yes / No Comment" method we have now

Reintroduce the scroll-slider on mobile app. Now it takes an age to scroll through a playlist. Worst is in edit mode. I want to drag tracks where I want to while editing a playlist. My latest is over 2,300 tracks.
Another is to recognise that if you go to add a duplicate track to a playlist, it recognises its the same song, despite it coming from the Deluxe version and not the original album version, single version or 2013 remastered release. So many times I forget I already have a song on a playlist, and it's added essentially the same twice.

u/idontwantanamern 22d ago
I want to be able to have new playlists curated with songs I might actually like pushed to me more prominently. And I mean new songs (new as in 2025 or older songs I don't listen to regularly - doesn't matter).
I used to love the daylist and things like that, but they became 90% songs I listened to often. I try to go out of my way to find new songs within the fresh music and release radar -- but they are the most boring / bland music that is either AI or clearly paid promotions; maybe 10% are things that are algorithm pushed. If I go and click of a "Made for Me" playlist based of songs I might like from similar artists of a band I like or a new band I discovered, I don't want the whole thing to be songs I already have on playlists or regularly listen to.
Finding new music is fun for me! I don't want to be stuck in a rut all the time.

I'd like to sort by label and year easier than currently. I work as a dj part time and it would be super convenient if spotify allowed me to search for labels, sort by year or even showed me new releases on labels like it does for artists.
Currently I search for labels by typing label:"ninja tune" for example and when you add year:2025 you only get the releases. It works but it's not so handy.

Audiobooks:
The ability to "pin", "earmark", "save" where you left off on a listen, not only by saving the chapter but earmarking or pinning the timestamp of the current chapter.
This way, you can go listen to music or podcasts without losing your place. So many times have I had to stop listening to an audiobook in the middle of a chapter and before I could get back to it, music or something else gets played. So, when going back to my audiobook not only do I have a hard time figuring out what chapter I was on but I also have an even harder time finally getting to the exact time in the chapter without having to listen around.
It's such a headache. Not even a mild inconvenience at this point, but it's become a major one and I know several people to complain of the same and even stopped listening to audiobooks on Spotify in a couple of cases because of this!
2
u/fduniho 22d ago
This is also important for music. I will listen to different albums or playlists on different devices, and I have to be diligent about turning off one before turning on the other to keep them from syncing, which can make me lose my place. For some playlists, I will delete what I've already listened to if it is a private playlist, or note down where I left off if it's a public playlist. It would be nice if I didn't have to.

Put EP's under the albums category so you dont have to wade through all the singles to find them. Or just create a third EP category
