I would say don’t give a fuck what people think
but if you are interested this is a playlist i made of the greatest songs of all time from many different genres limited to one per artist https://open.spotify.com/playlist/16gaAurDGvDbUBcvFfMI0p?si=dcvRNBtwSe6jPHoz7peuvA&pi=YAdQTJ9gTFia8
if you like a song id suggest looking more into that artist

When I was little, my dad listened to 70’s and 80’s rock n roll, my sister listened to 00’s pop, and my mom listened to 60’s-80’s country and soft rock, so that’s the stuff I listened to. How I branched out was through movies, YouTube, video games. Whatever I liked listening to in other media, I’d add to my playlists. These days, I think an easy way to find new music is reaction videos on YouTube. There’s a ton of channels dedicated to people listening to stuff they never have before. I have 3 or 4 that I follow and whenever they show up in my recommended feed, I watch because maybe I’ll like it.

Step 1: Listen
Step 2: If it sounds good, listen to more from them
Step 3: If Step 2 is a success, try the related artists
Step 4: Realize that 99% of people that will be willing to make fun of you for your musical taste probably only listen to what they do based on how popular the music is and not what it sounds like.
Step 5: take a dive in the music history in general

But there are metal fans that rly have tiny things
Bc I was once heavily downvoted and got a few hateful comments on a sub reddit bc I was doing a "guess my top artist", as ik it would be kind off unforeseeable (twenty one pilots and, yes, i have listened to no phun intended and rab, so i am heavily in).The thing is, that sub has a lot of internet addicted metal fans and I had a mostly pop top.

Don't listen to people telling you to go watch critics, unless that's already your thing, in my experience modern music critics SUCK, Fantano included. Don't give a fuck what people think of your taste, it's yours and thats what's important. If you truly feel like you want to branch out, go to artists that you like on Spotify. If you have a computer, you can go to the "Discovered On" section of an artists profile. There should be different playlists that people have discovered the artist on over there. This works better with smaller artists, so maybe start with the littler things you know as of now. Don't just limit yourself to Spotify! If you enjoy Rap or EDM type shit SoundCloud is great for finding stuff. Bandcamp is good for teeny tiny bands, more indie rock and experimental. YouTube has gotten a lot more bogged down in recent years when it comes to music, but there's always a good music compilation or two floating around my recommendations. I listen to a lot of midwest emo and hyperpop, so take my word on not giving a fuck if you seem cringe to people. It feels so fucking good. Just like it if you like it, if you don't, well being basic is just a label others have given you, don't let that define your taste. Don't force anything. Obligatory Spotify Link in case you enjoy listening to strangers music https://open.spotify.com/user/punkkid617?si=ydZjqEMMTlCKLKMmWa2h1A

Search up any emotion you are having on spotify; find public playlist; add songs you like to private playlist; Repeat. Eventually you end up finding more artists you like and then niche genres. Very interesting people to be calling some music "basic".

Honestly, I may be a bit basic too, but take inspo from your friends (ask them what they listen to, or stalk their airbuds), songs from your childhood that your parents/guardians enjoyed, anything you hear online - you like that song on tiktok? Chuck it on your playlist and listen to more by the same artist and find similar music to theirs.
If you don't like what you put on your playlists you can always remove it. That's my mentality!

Pop rock is a good way. Go for billie eilish too bc she has a lot of songs that can introduce you to alternative.
I also reccomend:
Cage the elephant
Twenty one pilots
Imagine dragons
Finneas
Panic at the disco (death of a bachelor is BY FAR my favourite album but feel free to like more others)
Olivia rodrigo / paramore for pop punk
If you want Indie I'd go for girl in red bc she can rly be great on alternative.
I am saying all of this bc, personally, I am a pop person, however ppl perceive me as being more than I am, when, in fact, I grew up with rock loving parents (my dad loves new order, joy division, green day, etc). As a result, I LOVE pop, Indie pop, alternative, emo and a bit of rock. From my experience, these are the artists I listen to that may be a good entrance for you to be on the not pop industrialised pop side. This is my spotify profile, if you want to check out some songs, playlists or artists: https://open.spotify.com/user/31wsa3oj6eh7ec2gnqbz7kl44vr4?si=XgUK8xDJSPGWJFae4YzQzQ

I'll tell you how to increase your music genres and taste. But you gotta promise yourself one thing. Repeat after me - I WONT BE INFLUENCED BY OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINION ON WHAT I LIKE, ESPECIALLY A BALD DUDE.
now, search for The needle drop on Youtube. Use his youtube channel to grow your music taste. Don't listen to genres he names "Experimental" right now.
The Album's he rates 7 or higher are a must listen. Don't listen to any album he rates 10/10 album right now as you need a lot of music experience to truly appreciate it. His ratings are like this - 0 - worst album ever. 1- Probably one good song. 2- Ass album. 3- a few good songs. 4- it's alright. 5- It's decent. 6 - It's good! 7 - It's great! 8 - It's amazing! 9- Probably album of the year/decade. 10- Definitely album of decade contender.
For particular genres, go to his playlist place on his channel, click on any genre you like and listen to albums with high ratings. if he's wearing a bright yellow and black shirt in the review video it's a great album! If he's wearing a red and black shirt it's a bad album.
Know one thing, he's a music critic, so he rates albums through his experience. So don't base your music opinions based on his scores or don't hate on his scores of your favourite album if he rates them low. Just use his channel as a medium to Grow your music taste cuz his channel is THE BEST for that.
Enjoy!!

The needle drop's a bald dude, now?

he described himself as that jokingly when he was referring to a comment talking about people forming their opinions based on his reviews.
He said something on the lines of "Come on now, you can enjoy the music you like. Who cares what some random bald dude on the internet has to say about the stuff you like", and the text in All caps is a reference to that.

I saw your list of most listened to artists, and here's my recomendations based on those artists.
Look to the 80s—Madonna, Prince, MJ, Whitney, Cyndi Lauper, The GoGos, the Bangles, New Order, Depeche Mode, The Cure. Dive into new wave and post punk. Listen to those artists' albums and you may find not only their big hits that you like, but some deep cuts as well—New Order has a lot of those.
Find their influences and the artists that they've influenced as well.

Go out to places that have live local bands playing. Get curious about other people's tastes in music. Research other music from different eras and genres.

Depending on how much effort you wanna put in, you can also learn about music. A very accessible way to go about that is to go onto youtube and start looking up musical concepts like harmonies or time signatures, and then after you think you understand one concept go and listen to music actively without doing other stuff, trying to listen for what you just learned. Over time you'll both get exposed to songs through the examples in those videos and you'll likely tend towards certain genres that play with those concepts in ways you find interesting.
While probably more cumbersome than just listening to a bunch of random music on the internet until something clicks, it does have the added benefit of giving you more ways to listen to and talk about music. Not to mention, if, in the end, you find yourself listening to the same stuff you do now, you can give an elaborate answer as to why you think that music is more interesting than it's normally given credit for.
