Playlist Question / Discussion Spotify is erasing thousands of real bands from their platform, and charging to do so.

1.1k Upvotes

Hey I’m Ian from Seattle band Among Authors. We’ve toured the country and performed on NPR Tiny Desk. I hope you all might read our story about complete corruption in the music industry that has to do with TuneCore and Spotify. This is not just our story, this is happening to bands all over the world.

We have officially removed all of our music from every streaming platform due to @tunecore and @spotify illegally taking down much of our music with false claims of illegal streaming activity, and then charging us penalty fees for every song they remove. Well cannot afford for these massively corrupt companies to illegally penalize us anymore than they already have. This is why we made the hard decision to remove all of our music. I want to make it clear that this creates such a larger problem for us as a band than just being penalized. They forced us out of being able to provide our fans our music in the way most people listen to music now days. This also created a huge loss for us in how we are able to reach potential new fans across the world. I can’t begin to tell you how frustrated we are that this is happening to indie bands all over the world right now. It is absolutely criminal what these corporations are doing, and we hope that by offering our first record “I AM BECOME” on Vinyl for whatever price you want to pay for it on our official website that it will get this conversation going. Please help spread the word, please follow the link in our bio, go get our vinyl for whatever price you want to pay, and share our story. We are working on finish up our new album right now, and I can honestly say I am terrified thinking about how irrelevant our band is becoming by the day, due to not being on streaming platforms. How on earth will anyone listen to our new album when we release it? This is why I am asking you all to please go get our first record on our website at whatever price you want, share our story, and help sustain and build our fan base with us, grassroots style and word of mouth. We truly do love you all, and value the respect and love you have show our band over the years. Our story is not done, it is just beginning, and we cannot wait to show you all our new album. Until then, head to the link in our bio and get yourself our first record on limited edition transparent blue vinyl for whatever price you want!

Thank you for reading, I encourage other bands to leave comments below who have faced similar issues with streaming platforms.

Playlist Question / Discussion What is 1 feature Spotify needs to add?

I think they need to add the Spatial Audio like Apple has, it’s so immersive and sounds amazing. What do you think they should add?

Playlist Question / Discussion How do you find new music you actually like?

I’ve never really been a big music listener. There are years of my life where I didn’t listen to a single song. On top of that, I’ve always been terrible at remembering lyrics (but that’s another story).

Now I’d like to start getting into music (I’ve got Spotify Premium), but I struggle to find songs I genuinely enjoy.

How do you usually discover music that clicks with you? Any tips or recommendations?

A couple of notes: • I don’t like reggaeton. • I enjoy rock and heavy metal, but most of the time I’ll be listening while driving, and those genres often feel a bit too heavy for that.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Playlist Question / Discussion Do you all create playlists or just have liked songs?

I don't create playlists, I just add all my songs to liked songs. And every 6 months I go through them, and transfer them all into playlists like "2025 part 1" or "2025 part 2", essentially creating time capsules. So when I'm feeling nostalgic, I go back to "2023 part 1" playlist and think about the good old days.

But I know of people who literally don't do anything. They just have liked songs and they are just huge playlists of thousands of songs. No other playlists. Are you like that? I'm curious.

Playlist Question / Discussion Do you remove songs from your playlists?

I have 1 main playlist with a ton of songs. At a certain point, there are songs I always skip and I'm not sure if I should remove them or keep skipping. What if I want to go back to it? Should I put it in a playlist of songs I don't listen to anymore, so I have it for later in case? I know it doesn't matter that much, but idk what the best way is.

Playlist Question / Discussion My music choices and organising f**king suck.

So im someone who mostly likes a bit of whatever I think sounds good. I dont have a favourite artist or specific genre i like. I mostly use Spotify while playing games like shooters as background noise so i dont fall asleep or get bored. (because id have a much more enjoyable time playing airsoft then another game of Call of duty).

However this has resulted in the playists I mostly use being an absolute shit show of more then 200 songs with most i end up flicking through to listen to something specific instead of just letting it play by itself because theres no consistency.

The most organised playlists i have I usually don’t listen too because i have the songs buried in a mass playlist.

So im not sure what I could do to sort it out.

Playlist Question / Discussion Making Playlists

I just switched to Spotify.

I am currently working on sorting all my music. I am starting by making playlists based on artists/genre, but definitely want to get into making mood/fun playlists.

How do you guys go about this? Like what are some of your favorite playlist themes/titles and how did you go about choosing music for those playlists?

Also, is there a software out there that sorts Spotify playlists for you?? I have a miscellaneous playlist of 900+ songs and it’s taking so long to go through. I would love some playlists generated for me to use as a starting point haha.

Playlist Question / Discussion Why do people struggle to find new music with Spotify?

Have to be honest, I'm blown away whenever I hear people – and I hear it a lot – complain about Spotify offering repetitive content and/or their not being able to find new music with the platform.

Since it was unveiled in 2015, Discover Weekly has been just about the only feature I care to engage with on the app, and that's simply because it's so damn good I have no need for anything else beyond it and whatever saved albums/playlists I upkeep.

I have no idea if algorithms on other platforms have caught up to it because I have no reason to investigate, but the suggestions DW began offering shortly after I started using it annihilated all others.

From the advent of streaming music up to 2015, music suggestion tools had been so damn bad I'd all but given up on them. In the decade since DW, I haven't gone a single week without interesting, unique, quality suggestions from that playlist that run the gamut of genres and artists (both known and unknown to me) that speak precisely to my evolving, various music tastes.

So back to my original question... why do people struggle to find new music with Spotify?

I love what they've done on android. Now, when I go to edit the order of a playlist, I can see the thumbnails! Yes!
