  • Carries two Maurten 160 gels on their long distance Sunday runs. SiS gels if they don't want to spend the extra $1 on Maurten.

  • Asics Novablast 5 or Adidas Pro 3 for long runs. Alphafly 3 for the 5k pace interval workouts. Wouldn't be caught dead wearing Hoka's, as they're for beginners

  • Strava workouts usually titled "Easy 32k at 4:20min/km pace. Thanks for the push [insert Strava buddy name here]!"

    • Bonus points if they do a shirtless selfie afterwards
  • Wears a Coros Pace 3 or Garmin Forerunner 165

  • Wears a Solomon running belt

  • Owns a Bob & Brad massage gun, because the running influencer they religiously follow on YouTube (probably Ran To Japan) convinced them it's better than a Theragun for half the price

thats only the flashy type. the simple type wears nothing but shorts, tshirt and old running shoes and smokes a pack of cigarettes a day.

51

u/BagNo4331 9d ago

Similar to hikers. One person who passes you climbing the hill has $12000 in ultralight gear on them. The other is wearing flip flops, smoking, and carrying a half full dasani bottle despite being like 8 miles from the last possible place to refill.

10

u/Ok-Speech-115 9d ago

my ass with a water bottle instead of cigarettes.

u/Momik 9d ago

ACL tear? Take a salt tablet.

u/TesticleMeElmo 9d ago

Guys get below 15% body fat and start acting like being asked to wear a shirt at any point between April and October is unreasonable and anyone who would expect a man to do that wants them to die of heat exhaustion.

11

u/retsoPtiH 9d ago

all of this to run.. and just get back home

talk to me when you arrive on foot in a bordering country /s

Well… at least it’s one of the better personalities to have

149

u/zephyr121 9d ago

I thought I was on r/runningcirclejerk at first lmao

Insanely accurate, coming from a former cross country runner

13

u/LordJacket 9d ago

I concur as a former track runner. My sister did XC as well

u/SecretPantyWorshiper 9d ago

So funny 😂

132

u/mitchdwx 9d ago

Wakes up at some ungodly early hour every morning (around 4-5 am) and has finished their workout and morning routine while the rest of the world is still pressing snooze.

16

u/Ok-Speech-115 9d ago

Im doing that myself, but waking up at 6 am, Im loving it.

7

u/Run_From_Epilepsy 8d ago

i cant say the same i run in the afternoon 99% of the time, even when my mileage was near 70 per week

252

u/CPC1445 9d ago

If he's the second body type he's doing the cardio shtick as a giant way to cut. Once he reaches down to that desired body fat percentage, you won't see him running for awhile until after he's done bulking.

82

u/md___2020 9d ago

Not necessarily true. The “hybrid athlete” bros can be super jacked and putting in 50+ miles per week (accomplished via the sauce).

12

u/Plastic-ashtray 9d ago

The sauce as in steroids?

71

u/Raging-Badger 9d ago

Marinara actually, it’s killer for gains

18

u/Plastic-ashtray 9d ago

Italian American body building culture makes more sense now.

8

u/SecretPantyWorshiper 9d ago

The hell is a hybrid athlete 😂

25

u/FridayNightRamen 9d ago

Sounds funny, basically means somebody running on their rest days. Probably the best thing you can do for your health aside from eating healthy food.

-24

u/SecretPantyWorshiper 9d ago

So running on your rest day suddenly makes you an athlete? Lol wtf

-7

u/phisher_cat 9d ago

Athletes that aren't good at running or lifting, so they do both

13

u/PeterNippelstein 9d ago

Ive got that body type and run but certainly not long distance, almost never more than 10k at a time. I do it to maintain cardiovascular health as well as for the myriad of other benefits running provides, both physically and mentally. It certainly does help to trim down excess body fat though, which is definitely a great bonus.

17

u/Asiras 9d ago

It can also be a hybrid athlete, you can do both lifting and running if you eat enough.

I'm not quite as big as picture 2, but enough to speak from experience.

-13

u/JontyFox 9d ago

Why be great at one thing when you can be painfully mid at both amirite?

15

u/Asiras 9d ago

Idk, getting told I look like a Greek statue is good enough for me.

5

u/FridayNightRamen 9d ago

Running doesn't kill your gains, you might not get your full potential (like a couple percent less) but who cares, if your are not running for Mr. Olympia. It's incrediblly healthy to do both.

4

u/Top_Wrangler4251 9d ago

It's more like choosing to be mid at two things instead of mid at one thing. The average runner or lifter is nothing compared to an actual elite athlete.

1

u/Asiras 9d ago

That's how I'd put it too, it's just a bigger time/energy commitment. I am a grad student so I can pull it off, but with a full time job it would mean sacrificing everything else.

Bodybuilding/weightlifting - alternating eating disorders for looks, but it’s okay because you look healthy

Edit: sorry for the joke

62

u/Squippyfood 9d ago

Alright lol let's walk it back. Yoyo dieting is bad but if you cut once, then slow bulk until a goal then you can look AND be healthy.

21

u/Raging-Badger 9d ago

My bad, I was just joking. Back when I was in that crowd we’d joke about it being two extremes or nothing.

Wrestling dudes took it worse though, they’d go from dehydrating themselves for 4 days to make weight to smashing 8 burgers and 2 trays of lasagna per meal for the 12 hours before a match

11

u/[deleted] 9d ago

[deleted]

5

u/cmotdibbler 9d ago

During swim practice the wrestlers would run around the steamy bleachers in sweatsuits to make weight, some of them carrying spit bottles.

13

u/PeterNippelstein 9d ago

Bodybuilding yes, weightlifting though is just an all around excellent form of exercise.

6

u/Raging-Badger 9d ago

Weight lifting culture is full of toxicities. Of course it’s good exercise, that doesn’t mean the crowd around it can’t have bad habits.

Some pre-workouts contain several times the recommended “safe” amount of caffeine in just one scoop. I’ve known weightlifters who advocated for drinking preworkout multiple times a day

5

u/PeterNippelstein 9d ago edited 9d ago

I mean I guess but just because you do strength training doesn't mean youre automarically part of that culture. There are people of all ages and fitness levels that use strength training to improve or maintain their physical fitness. To compare it to bodybuilding in terms of unhealthy eating disorders is just completely innacurate. Theres jackasses in every population of people no matter what the activity is, that doesn't mean it should discounted as unhealthy just because a loud minority goes about it in an unhealthy way. Thats all im saying.

I lift weights three days a week and my lifestyle isn't remotely similar to that of a gym rat bodybuilder. I dont even consume pre workout or supplements aside from fish oil and melatonin.

0

u/Raging-Badger 9d ago

It was a joke man, I was condemning an entire category of exercise for real

1

u/PeterNippelstein 9d ago

I think the joke would have been better if you just said bodybuilding, just a note.

1

u/Raging-Badger 9d ago

Noted, I didn’t know it was such a delicate topic

37

u/It_Slices_It_Dices 9d ago

Wears goodr sunglasses

15

u/_-_happycamper_-_ 9d ago

10

u/barf_digestion 9d ago

80

u/bvaesasts 9d ago

Pretty much all distance runners are the left build. Sprinters look like the right dude lol

36

u/VultureSniper 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yeah there's a trend that sprinters are ripped while distance runners are bone-thin. It's because sprinters benefit from the increased strength and power that comes with bigger muscles. Sprinters have more fast-twitch fibers and distance runners have more slow-twitch fibers (fast-twitch fibers are larger).

Additionally, distance runners want to be as light as possible for better endurance, so they don't want to be very big.

22

u/zephyr121 9d ago

There are a few distance runners who look like the left build with clothes on but are actually the right one. It’s baffling every time you see it.

6

u/icyDinosaur 9d ago

The only guy in my secondary school class who had a sixpack was the one guy who did athletics. To be fair he hadn't specialised into a specific discipline at that point, so he just was all around fit, but he was clearly never the strongest guy we had, just the only one skinny enough that you could see his abs.

5

u/SecretPantyWorshiper 9d ago

Yeah sprinters are built like fucking tanks lolm pretty crazy because you don't expect people that big to move that fast

13

u/DontPoopInMyPantsPlz 9d ago

Has a hydration vest and/or trekking poles in the closet

31

u/jessicat62993 9d ago

Don’t forget nipple band aids

17

u/Throwawayaccount1170 9d ago

Not a long distance runner but the first time I pushed 10km as an amateur my nipples hurt so much. So that's just a clever thing to use

7

u/SecretPantyWorshiper 9d ago

Lol what is that 😅

21

u/TearOpenTheVault 9d ago

It’s just tape to cover up your nipples and stop them from chafing against your shirt. It’s a thing for guys because women are wearing bras that stop it from happening in the first place.

9

u/jessicat62993 9d ago

I’ve seen cross country runners with bleeding nipples because the chafing was so bad!!!

12

u/DavidGoetta 9d ago

Smh, everyone knows you gotta wear Shokz headphones

31

u/Gniphe 9d ago

The flashy one doesn’t get hit by a car at 5:00 am.

9

u/LordJacket 9d ago

Lose some of the carb foods and throw in 80s hair metal, that’s my dad

8

u/glytxh 9d ago

Some of us were just blessed with the rat gene and have an insane metabolism.

3

u/gnlliestner 8d ago

I wished we could share our abilities. I have peasant body. Whatever goes it will be stored for the next famine

9

u/PM_Mick 9d ago

How do you know someone is a runner?

They'll tell you.

3

u/Own_Hurry_3091 8d ago

Look. We will tell you about it. I hope you have budgeted an hour to listen to us talk about shoes and another 45 minutes for our favorite races. We've run marathons and by golly the world deserves to hear about it.

4

u/biyotee 9d ago

Always leaving Vermont for Olympic gold.

4

u/BarelyNSFW56 9d ago

Lol, nailed it! 😂 But where's the random ankle injury that comes outta nowhere?

19

u/BillyBean11111 9d ago

i have never seen a real distance runner with big biceps, they usually look like weird freaks

3

u/-ramchi- 9d ago

can we do a female version I can send to my mom

4

u/SquirrelBlind 9d ago

Never heard of the app on the left

3

u/Ok_Replacement8176 8d ago

Athletic.net, it's a site mostly used for high school xc and track results

2

u/CaptainoftheVessel 9d ago

Anyone know what kind of watch that is?

7

u/thespool 9d ago edited 8d ago

Looks like Garmin Forerunner in white. Probably 55 or 255

2

u/CaptainoftheVessel 9d ago

Garmin Forerunner

Thanks!

1

u/Weary_Bother_5023 4d ago

yes, built only like the one with black shorts. why i stopped distance running. and it's freakin boring.

-1

u/Background-Way4722 9d ago

True, except i dont use a watch and use the adidas app.

I only run 10-20 kilometers every day tho so idk if i count.

-3

u/Averagebass 9d ago

They do not wear shirts no matter what. Most of it is to show off, some of it's chafing.
