It's genuinely scary how this shit content creeps into my social media feed. I'm a young male so I'm the ideal target for Andrew Tate-like content. And I (for obvious reasons) despise such misogynistic views, but I've noticed more and more that the social media algorithms seem to push this kind of content on to me. The SipsTea subreddit is more subtle than other "manosphere" / "incel" subreddits, but it's very noticeable that almost every meme / joke on there is trying to subtly tell you that women are just crazy and emotional objects that will never listen to reason. And if you're not careful it's very easy to fall into that kind of content and actually get radicalised by it.

The algorithms are the new incarnation of the creep standing outside the high school with a pamphlet waiting to prey on innocent minds. Except the creep is invisible and is operated by tech oligarchs.
Social media is banned in my household. I have a Facebook profile to share photos of my family and vacations and stuff so that older relatives can see. But that's it. My children aren't allowed to have social media until they're 18. I've seen too much bullshit.

Nah you're wrong about r/watchpeopledie. That it was pretty much just documenting what death is really like, the thing is you'll never know when you're last day will be and that sub really helped me with the struggle that one day this experience will be over.
A bit of a tangent here
Today in Society we have become apathetic to death which in turn has made us detached from our reality. Which is that this life is truly unstable and can change on a dime. Venture capital has done a great job at making the world seem "normal". Covid snapped people out of that but we haven't figured out where to go next.

That's absolutely true and a good point. But that's why I've had conversations with my son repeatedly about the danger of bad information and bad people online. People who don't share what we believe in as far as what being a good person means. Who might convince him to go down a bad path. Not unlike what fundamentalist Christians tell their children, but directed towards keeping him away from sexism instead of science.
When he's old enough to understand this, then he can have unsupervised internet. Until then, we have strict parental controls.

I’m talking about social media where you can be bullied or pressured by peers. Reddit to me is just another website online. If I banned Reddit I’d have to ban the internet altogether and I’m not going that far. Personally, I use it to discuss politics and sports. If my kids wanted to do that, I wouldn’t have a problem. But they’re too young for that still.

Anonymity isn’t really the biggest problem on social media. It’s algorithmically curated feeds that prey on vulnerable young minds to put them into extremist echo chambers.
Whether it’s coming from Johnny Spumoni from Maryland, or /u/misterbeefysock doesn’t make a huge difference on that front. It’s a stranger either way.
the vast vast majority of social media use is consumption of content, not creation. reddit’s anonymity only marignally protects the minority creation side.

In fact I’ve started muting any non-English sub because I just don’t understand them and I’m sick of it. Also started muting the weird weeb subs about anime’s I’ve never heard of. It’s crazy how shitty this algorithm is

The starter pack image seems fairly accurate. I confusedly thought it would be a pretty gender neutral funny meme collection. Its quickly become clear it is a bunch of basement dwellers ogling sexy women or denigrating smart ones or both. I hid the sub.

I'm glad this thread finally confirms it. This stupid website keeps shoving it into my scroll feed and I keep clicking on it because I'm not paying attention.
I haven't been able to figure out what any of the posts mean or how they relate to the Kermit meme. They mostly all appeared to be inside joke nonsense until I started getting the impression it was incel shit, but even then I wasn't sure because it's all so random and weird.
Hell, I don't subscribe to this sub either. This is another one that Reddit decided I'd like and keeps fucking shoving at me.
