I know it’s ironic to write a review right after saying “don’t overthink reviews,” but hear me out. If you’re on the fence about buying Stellar Blade, this is for you.
I just finished it on PS5 and honestly, I had a blast. I usually like action games with good graphics like Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, and Cyberpunk. I’d seen a ton of Reddit posts tearing this game apart and while most of that criticism is fair, as a casual gamer I still had a great time. Don’t get lost in the review rabbit hole like I almost did - just play it.
Combat is where the game shines. At first I was terrible and kept dying to basic enemies because parrying is tricky. Took a couple of hours to get the timing correct but once i learned, it was super fun. You collect Vitcoins to upgrade Eve’s skills (better dodges, attacks, etc.). It’s simple enough to keep you hooked without being overwhelming.
Boss fights are usually awesome, epic, flashy, and they push you to actually learn patterns. But yeah, Reddit’s right: balance is inconsistent. Some bosses are ridiculously hard with cheap one-shots others are laughably easy. Regular Naytibas start off cool but later on they get repetitive or just gross for the sake of it.
The story has cool sci-fi elements but overall it’s pretty basic and doesn’t hit that hard. Side quests add a bit of heart, but it’s no Ghost of Tsushima. I’ve seen posts saying the devs admit the story’s weak and want to fix it for the sequel.
Characters are a mixed bag:
- Eve looks cool but doesn’t grow much
- Tachy’s hyped as a mentor but gets little screen time
- Adam’s a boring lore-dumper
- Lily doesn’t really evolve
- Raven’s the only one with some layers
Compared to GoT or TLOUS, these characters don’t leave much impact.
The linear structure works well it keeps things focused without the open-world bloat. But yeah, Reddit’s right again: lots of corridors, platforming can be clunky, and some enemy designs feel like they’re trying too hard. Still, exploration and side quests were fun enough for me.
The game is gorgeous, smooth animations, 60fps, and a really cool sci-fi world. Music fits well and adds to the vibe. Collecting outfits was fun too, though I wish they had gameplay perks like boosting parries or health instead of being purely cosmetic.
People talk a lot about Eve’s outfits and the “sexy vibe.” Honestly, it didn’t feel overdone to me. She looks good while fighting, but it never crossed into NSFW territory. If it bugs you, fair enough it's a personal opinion.
TL;DR:
- Combat = awesome (once you learn parrying and blocking).
- Boss fights = epic but inconsistent.
- Story/characters = weak compared to the greats.
- Visuals/music = beautiful.
- Exploration/side quests = solid.
- Overall = If you’re a casual gamer who just wants tight combat and a gorgeous world, this is worth your time. Don’t let the negativity scare you off.
Hyped for the sequel if they fix the story.
