Subreddit Blackout in Response to Reddit API Changes

Dear members of /r/StephenKingBookClub,

We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to inform you about some recent developments regarding the upcoming changes to the Reddit API and the subsequent impact on our beloved subreddit. As you may have heard, Reddit has announced a series of API changes that have sparked concerns among moderators and users alike.

These changes and the resulting forced shutdown of third-party apps due to exorbitant API costs have frustrated many of us here on Reddit. In light of these circumstances, we have made the decision to join the protest and set our subreddit to go dark on June 12th-13th. We believe this collective action will draw attention to the concerns we share with numerous other subreddits and provide an opportunity to voice our frustrations toward Reddit.

The changes to the API and the shutdown of third-party apps have a profound impact on our ability to foster discussion, share recommendations, moderate this subreddit, and celebrate the works of Stephen King together. We understand the inconvenience this may cause for our dedicated members, and for that, we apologize. However, we firmly believe that this protest is necessary to stand up for the principles that underpin the Reddit community.

We hope that this blackout will send a strong message to Reddit leadership, urging them to reconsider these changes and work towards a more collaborative, fair, and inclusive approach. We encourage you to join us in this collective action by participating in discussions on alternative platforms, engaging with other Stephen King communities, avoiding Reddit entirely, and spreading awareness about the issues we are facing.

Following the two-day blackout, we will reassess the situation and evaluate the guidance provided by larger subreddits and the greater Reddit community. We will make an informed decision on how to proceed, keeping the best interests of our community at heart. Thank you for your understanding. We will keep you informed about any updates regarding the situation and the status of the subreddit.

Sincerely,

The Mod Team of /r/StephenKingBookClub

Discussion Summary

Hello all, I started reading IT a good while back and I stopped reading bc I didn’t have much time or energy to read but I wanted to get back into it only to realize I can’t remember a lot of what happened. I’m on the second interlude I was hoping someone could summarize the first two parts for me so I don’t have to re read almost half the book. Thank you! :)

Does The Long Walk Book still hold up today? A retrospective review. [Spoilers] Spoiler

I revisited Stephen King’s The Long Walk, a book I first read years ago, and was struck by how differently it hits me now. What seemed like a brutal survival story back then feels more layered today — a mix of dystopian horror, psychology, and quiet philosophy about endurance and society. In my review, I reflect on what’s aged well, what surprised me on the re-read, and why this story still lingers long after you close the book.

Please take a minute to check out my longer review below. Warning: spoilers.

Thank you!

The Long Walk by Stephen King (writing as Richard Bachman) - Written in 1979, does it still hold up? [Spoilers]

Discussion My opinion on Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining"

(THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS)

So I watched Kubrick's "Shining", and...

If I hadn't read the novel, I would've wrote : "What a masterpiece!"

The film is undeniably cold, groundbreaking, cinematically stunning...

But it's missing something distinctly King-like.

Emotion.

Stephen King's "Shining" thrives on our love for its endearing characters. The fear isn't just fueled by visual horror elements but also by the genuine fear for their lives.

King's Danny (Kubrick one is cold af), King's Wendy (unlikable in the movie)... Even King's Jack is relatively endearing. A good person who slowly loses control under the Overlook's influence (whereas in the film, it feels like he was always a psychopath).

The film is excellent, but I think it's impossible to truly appreciate it after experiencing King's emotional masterpiece.

And you? Which one do you prefer?

A little project for my wife

My wife is a fan of SK so I made her some Dark Tower themed coasters. I 3D printed little “tokens” to place into some of the designs.

Shes read his entire catalog and has a crazy book shelf(s) in our home for his work and other collectibles of his. These will be joining them as well 😊

Before anyone gets all crazy that I, myself, didn’t draw these images, I totally understand your displeasure with computer generated images. I made these using a combination of her input as a fan and from my own research, for her enjoyment…which she does. 🙂

Question The Night Flier

Folks, I thought the short story "The Night Flier" was in the "Night Shift" collection, but my copy doesn't have it. I need a short quote from the story, the one where the journalist is described as "knowing his camera better than a woman'smastering their camera functions body". (I'm paraphrasing) I need the quote. I teach photography, and I am trying to teach my students the importance of becoming fluent in the functions of their cameras. Thanks!

Hunting for an Interview

Hi All,

I am searching online for a gem of an interview with SK. I recall it was long, and may have been part of a feature / profile on him. It seemed rare, and contained footage of him writing at his desk, commenting on his process and that he was struggling with his new book, which was shown lain out on the table in manuscript form. Circa 1980s. Has anyone seen this?

Cheers.

Please help: I'm reluctant to read some Stephen King books

I've been an avid Stephen King fan since days long gone by... That said, and for reasons I couldn't rationally explain, (although I will briefly attempt to make some plausible arguments for my reluctance to read some of his books) namely:

CHRISTINE: So, we have a demonic car (?)

CUJO: A nasty dog (I love dogs)

MISERY: Two characters, perhaps predictable?

THE DARK TOWER SERIES: Never read one, don't know why I don't want to

So basically I just need you to tell how wrong I am and why I should read any of these books if anyone of them should happen to be a favourite of yours.

Thank you in advance

Discussion Questions Regarding the Stand

Hello all!

Frequent reader here on my sixth or seventh journey through the stand. It never really hit home for me how much shine/touch the characters in this book have. It got me wondering if maybe part of their shine was the reason for their resistance to the super flu.

I don’t have many reasons for thinking this other than the amount of shine we see in the book. I guess my first few trips through the book I was so used to characters having the touch, the shining and dark tower novels are my favorite to revisit, that I didn’t really attribute it to anything but now I’m left wondering.

Thank you for your time, long days and pleasant nights all!
