Weapons/Tactics Touching tree line
Went out into the hills to try some Drone integration, and communication. Spotting things and relaying that to others. Wasn’t a bad hike up, pretty short but I could definitely feel the extra weight of the drone and spotting gear. The lady came and had to rock the RPK with the Smersh.

A little smoky out here as well, looks like a hell of a good time!

It was! And the smoke kept the heat down and added a very nice vibe to the trip.

Love me some m05. Are you guys Finnish? Or just have good taste…
52
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
M05 does very well in New England!
24
u/Snow_Wolfe Aug 06 '25
I like it for PNW as well. Mix in some flecktarn and it goes well for fall hunting.
15
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
My gal loves fleck, typically she runs it exclusively or with a mix of m05 or DNC.
2
u/JEASON277 29d ago
Agreed, I’m starting to collect me some as well. I’m in the PNW. Love m81 of course but also love Multicam Tropic and AOR2. The seasons are so different here that you literally need 4-5 different camos to really blend in each season. And then there’s those times it snows.
1
u/Snow_Wolfe 29d ago
Love the 81 for sure. I didn’t serve so I tend to steer away from US military camos, not that it probably matters terribly much. I also like having things not many other people are wearing, and I have a ton of respect for the Finnish defense force.

I make little remote control danglers for kit for a few Fpv drone operators.
Mounts under your placard and has a qd setup So your remote is always nearby

u/sammeadows Aug 06 '25
Are you just private selling them or do you have a website or Instagram?
This post may have triggered my autistic urge to dump money into yet another hobby and I gotta justify some of this madness

u/Competitive_Cow7583 Aug 06 '25
I work for esstac But I also run my own company where I design and develop special interest products like the dangler setup. You can follow me on instagram @OnisTy_innovations
My website is not really running I’ve had no time To finalize it 😆
1
u/sammeadows Aug 07 '25
Just needs to go under the "special needs" tab on his site :P
For real though I'm looking at Rekon drones and other small quick systems so it would be pretty slick to have. And would be nice only having to worry about 18650s on the drone.

u/Competitive_Cow7583 Aug 07 '25
These aren’t an esstac item they’re under my brand. OnisTy Innovation
2
u/JEASON277 29d ago
Also agree with this. I’m actually building my own indoor long range cockpit using simulator joystick and trottle lever with AR glasses that have headtracking installed on them (so I can still see my controls yet still have a big picture of my 3-axis controlled fpv gimbal on my drone that turns and tilts with my heads movement) for a 10” quad with dual 3-axis gimbal fpv’s and payload capability of upto 7kg’s that uses IR laser to Aim with. Hehehehe
Note: this setup works best if you have an Auto Antenna tracker on your roof with several directional antennas attached to it and an outdoor drone hub that you can land your drone in and is magnetic chargering to charge your drone so you don’t have to swap batteries manually if you don’t want to go outside.

I haven't brought myself to get rid of my Mini 3 Pro for this very reason. The 2X zoom sucks, but, you can stick it in a cargo pocket and go. cUAS liability aside it's really hard to beat DJI or any other commercial drone.
Super cool you got your woman coming with you, still working on getting mine to go on hikes with her kit.
6
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
My thoughts exactly! Sure I could make a drone from scratch and it would be more signal stealthy but it comes at the cost of reliability and durability. The DJI drones just work and work well they do at such a tiny package. If it had a better camera and maybe thermal capability it’d be perfect.
2
Aug 06 '25
It's pretty hard to break the cUAS kill chain anyway. Sure, not having RID/DID/ODID will make sure Karen cannot detect you (within max ~600m) but you'll never get rid of the acoustic let alone RF signatures and clear modulation artifacts, let alone the visuals of a drone lol.
I've starting build a few Flightory designs for longer endurance and custom payload options, notably the Super Stingray VTOL and Moose, but I would never be able to lug it up a hillside with out distributing the pieces across a few people.
The Mavic 3T, and hell, even a M30T can be packed out. I carried a M30T wrapped in a foam blanket with foam sleeves over the props, instead of a laundry bag with carrying straps up and down the east coast when I used to do volunteer SAR and game recovery work. It's not comfortable at all, but having 1.5KM range on thermal, 200X digital zoom, 1/2 mile service ceiling, and a LRF + FPV modes is really, really hard to beat for something that costs less than a good precision bolt gun.
Too bad "both parties" (as if there is a major difference) in the previous regimes in Washington have a hate boner for DJI. The Mini 4 and 5 are fucking sick looking.
2
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
Have you heard of Anzu robotics? They are an officially licensed by DJI for the US market, and produce some drones more tailored to our use. If they could take the mini pro series and up the camera capabilities that would be awesome. The minis are pretty quiet, but can’t beat a fix wing in terms of noise and endurance.
3
Aug 06 '25
Yeah I've got my eyes on a Raptor T if they come down in price. $8K is a hell of a price to pay for an emerald green Mavic 3T. I gotta dig into their signal stack a bit more, at least DJI is the devil I know and the security research on them is very well done across a variety of firms.
Are you using the stock props? I can hear my Mini 3 even at 150m above me, I find it to be pretty loud, but yeah the fixed wing stuff is way quieter and the COTS motors have a lot of propeller support to index on acoustics or endurance, or a blend in between. I haven't tried messing with any 3rd party props for the DJI.
2
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
I’d love to know what their signal looks like aswell, and the price gouge is steeeep. As for my mini 3 pro with stock blades I can’t hear it beyond 30-40m. It is typically windy here so that helps a ton.(battery life aside) yesterday’s trip wasn’t windy at all unfortunately and it was pretty loud. Guess this setup I have now will have to do for a bit till something better rolls around or things get cheaper

My biggest fear with DJI kit is that the DroneID stuff for all of the OccuSync 3-series (and some of the 2 series) is encoded into their transmissions as plaintext OFDM symbols. That's how the mainstream CUAS guys and of course AeroScope can pick up on you further than say, Karen with an ODID scanner on her iPhone 13.
It's been proven that this isn't encrypted, not sure if it ever was, I assume to abided by CCP and the FAA Final Rule on Remote ID but it's also annoying from a Red Team perspective. I've been slowly building a DJI-specific decoder based on published research on OccuSync 3 but a lot of what I find isn't matching up. The data burst delays are different airframe to airframe, the channel bandwidth isn't just 10MHz, and adding the FPV goggles in also complicates collection.
Not much on Anzu's website other than the normal "9 mile" range transmissions. I assume it'll still be dual-band 2.4 (and one of either 5 or 5.8) ISM, wouldn't surprise me if it's OFDM, but looks like if I want to find out I gotta pay the tax lmao.

u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
I believe it, we ran these Jammers known as Drake systems by Northrop Grumman. We would see drones as far as 50 miles off and could know their make and model. I really love drones for the ISR aspect but a signal no matter what can be traced and probably decoded. Unless your running waypoint missions or fiber optics it’s just a devil we will have to aspect and use to our advantage(just be highly mobile)
1
Aug 06 '25
Oh dude, I know of the DRAKE, I've been working on recreating it slowly with a BladeRF 2.0 xA9 lol. Trying to find the right combinations of high gain antennas + LNA and bandpass or other high|low-pass filters.
50 miles is a GREAT data point. I can pick up on my drone from pretty far away on both ISM bands with a mini gooseneck +1.9dbi and a 5GHz bandpass but the Mini 3 doesn't really get the advertised range in my experience so I never knew what the maximum is.
I'm looking to pivot into EW/cUAS manufacturing and software out of cyber once I sell my company, this made me more excited lol, gotta get into the gov bucks but also sell the capabilities to other civs too

u/fusillade762 Aug 07 '25
You might want to consider a Neo. They are smaller, instantly deployable and stupid tough. Also really good scout drones that can pick through heavy wood. Only downside is they are noisy and short batt life. On the plus side, also cheap.

Does FPV make it easier to fly than just looking at a screen? Is it worth it to essentially be blind to your immediate surroundings?
I ask because I’m looking into drones, preferably ones that don’t have any or as many geo-restrictions as DJI.
6
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
So far I’m finding fpv is good for picking up details and seeing the screen in a bright environment, but definitely has the pitfall of blindness. (Newer goggles have built in cameras) I’m leaning towards just using the controller with a screen since it’s less to carry and one less battery to keep charged. I’m just learning how to integrate drone use so I’m using a DJI for ease of use, in the future I’ll switch to something more tailor made for this sort of thang.

If you’re serious about using drones as part of your LARP, I seriously recommend going DIY instead of DJI.
Here’s a guide on how to get started: drone 101
I have I think 5 guides out right now, they build on each other and you’ll know everything you need to know to build your own drone when you’re done
1
u/stupid_account_69 Aug 06 '25
How reliable are they though? I’m a pretty technical guy and I’ve tinkered a lot but I haven’t had good luck with bleeding edge tech and stuff like custom operating systems in the reliability department.
Seems like there’s a market here for those who want to sell custom built drones without all the bloat that companies like DJI package into their products.
Appreciate the resource by the way, I’ll check it out.
1
u/BasedPinoy Aug 06 '25
They’re plenty reliable. The technology is robust as long as you choose quality components. Honestly the bottleneck in reliability comes down to the pilot, your soldering skills, and maintenance.
You don’t need a custom OS, that’s getting too much in the weeds. Betaflight, QGroundControl, and even ArduPilot can accomplish whatever it is you need
2
u/jimmybobby71 Aug 06 '25
Gonna need a picture of your DZ rig and the loadout, there bud…
4
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
What’s about specifically? I can do a layout post
2
u/jimmybobby71 Aug 06 '25
Looks like you have a few extra pouches attached and it’s always cool to see what people run in their belt kit. Especially since you’ve got your drone up I’m curious if you’re carrying that in your pack or in your belt. A layout post would be sick.
2
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
I’m going on a 4 day trek this weekend, gotta check the kit anyway I’ll do a layout post of the belt and pack! I’ve got a lot of customization to the dz rig

2
u/SmokeWagon987 Aug 06 '25
I would also enjoy a layout post and/or general thoughts about the DZ rig. I'd like to get into some LBE soon. Specifically for hiking the White Mountains with my dogs, especially in the heat. Kinda looks like the southern edge of the whites, where you're at, but it could be my central NH bias coming through. Cheers man! Great post, and you clearly have a great woman.

You’re right on the money for location and I’ll work on a post this evening to follow up this one!

Dji goggles 2 with a skin? Any special kind of way you carry yours around? Seeing this with just a dji Mini is making me very tempted haha
2
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
It packs down into a small Tupperware that fits in my pack, and it works great so far, but I think I’m going to ditch the goggles. Takes up space and needs charging
2
u/sammeadows Aug 06 '25
Yeah thats the pitfall I'm feeling, it just looks too cool haha
Oh well, makes buying a Mini 2 easier than getting a mini 3 and goggles, just need a good phone mount

That’s an ihps no? Where’d you buy the helmet cover from, and why’d you go with an ihps over something like a high cut?? Other than price
1
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 07 '25
I like the addition protection(IHPS performance aside), especially since I don’t mount my ear pro to my helmet. There are plenty of times where I dont run a helmet and times I do. Better to keep em two separate items

Whats the jacket/shirt you are wearing? Been looking for something like that in m05
2
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
It’s the field shirt I think from Varusteleka
2
u/Falkenhayn98 Aug 06 '25
Awesome, thanks! I already have the field pants and the LVPC carrier from them, so i guess this is a sign to finish the set. Also, kind of a dumb question: is it normal that the black color on the m05 camo looks a little bit blue-ish? I noticied that on my field pants and was wondering if thats normal or a mistake. Cheers!
Also great kit btw!
2
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
Thank you! I cannot say with my m05 it’s blueish, but I bought mine a while back while it was still being produced in china. Recently to my knowledge they moved all production to Europe!

If you’re gonna do this, you’re better off building the drone yourself. Not using a drone that’s highly traceable
Edit: you downvoters are morons. I build, fly and configure drones for a living lmao
9
u/NotRelax1ng Aug 06 '25
Very true and I do have plans for that down the road. Just getting used to it as a tool first. I remember our drake jammer picking up DJI drones from Dubai 50 miles out.

u/BasedPinoy Aug 06 '25
People are downvoting you, but you’re completely correct. Anyone with an SDR and basic knowledge of signals will pick up a DJI feed
