Recommendations General Purpose Assault Pack Suggestions

Post image

I'm in the Canadian Infantry, and I'm currently split between finding a good choice to replace the issued day bag the CAF issues. There's nothing wrong with it; it's a good bag, but It's very bulky and doesn't pack well. As well as that, I want to have a bag I can use outside of the military. I was recently looking at the Crossfire CF1, but it's too small for the winter and specialty roles.

I need an Assault Pack that can fill any role in an infantry platoon (Rifleman, Leadership, Grenadier, LMG, GPMG, AT) and that can expand if need be to accommodate for unexpected conditions such as weather, equipment, etc. my requirements are:

  • Relatively small; must be able to be stuffed inside a rucksack
  • Has a Beavertail (Or is Beavertail Friendly) to shove helmets or just anything in general.
  • Modular and versatile and expandable for different roles
    • Can hold multiple 200-round 7.62x39 ammo cans
    • Can hold sustained fire equipment for GPMGs.
    • Can hold 84 mm Carl Gustav Ammo as shown
    • Can hold a M72 comfortably
  • Radio & Hydration Compatible
  • Compatible with LBEs/battle belts, this is a nonnegotiable
  • Ideally Multicam

I am fully aware that a one-size-fits-all approach isn't possible, but a one-size-fits-most is what I am looking for. I am willing to compromise on some of the requirements, but for the most part I do need something along these lines. Budget-wise, I don't specifically have one, as long as it is reasonable for what you're getting.

Many thanks.

Just do what every caf infanteer does and get a 5.11 rush 24 or 72

Yeah second this. It's the unofficial pack for the Irish Army aswell. Can't go too wrong with it

I was initially going to buy a Rush backpack. But unfortunately, it doesn't fit well with LBEs; I've tried them before. The strap system they have will also rub on your neck and you wont be able to look up in the prone with it on, which is a pretty bad con.

Ive been using a rush 72 as a caf infanteer for the past 7 years, it's not that big of an issue

I'm glad it works well with you; the 72 was my first buying option since it is a great bag, but it just didn't work well for me. I have a weird torso length that just doesn't allow me to wear it as intended, cheers

Mystery Ranch 2-day assault pack, works great for everything from SAW gunning to being a driver

Anything form Eberlestock Mystery Ranch or LBT...

May need to get in the ball for MR. My understanding is that, with their purchase by Yeti, they’ll be cutting back on civilian products and sales.

The real answer.

The MR Overload. 50L pack with an expansion that would fit Gus/MTR rds.

You aren’t gonna find anything that will do the last two/three well, that is packable.

I would suggest that for packable beaver tail that you could use with a MG to get an Eagle Yote pack

Any pack that can hold a reasonable amount of linked or canned ammo that’s “packable” into another ruck is a 100% not Service related injury in about 10 minutes.

MR SATL could be a decent second hand option.

Yeah if you wanted a smaller pack the SATL would def be my choice.

Platatac SPUR tropical is your answer. Designed to work with LBE, but you might have to get creative or sacrifice the beavertail.

If you have a long torso, MR assault packs usually work with LBE, but you’d have to get a beavertail from Walkman backpacks and then possibly add some sustainment pouches with some DIY shock cord mods for compressibility. As far as cost for all that, I’m not sure the juice is worth the squeeze.

I have no issue running an MR blitz 30/custom beavertail with a Carcajou belt, for example. It doesn’t come in multicam, but the beavertail covers most of the front of the pack and can be purchased in multicam.

That's a good suggestion; it seems like too much bag again im not sure but looking at the reviews it seems like a solid choice. I was thinking of the Blitz 30 or 35, but at ex I got the chance to see it, as someone else had it and it seemed too tall for my torso, thank you for the suggestions tho and I will look into the Platatac bag

Of course! I’ve been looking at that bag too and it seems to already have shock cord built in on the sides to keep it compressed.

Though their QC has taken a steep nosedive, my TAD FAST pack is my favorite.

That's a great suggestion; too bad it doesn't seem to be on sale anymore. do you have any alternatives like that that you may suggest? I'm basically looking for something close to that, kind of like a Crossfire CF1 but bigger

Sounds like this might help: https://eberlestock.com/products/bandit-pack

This thing is a lot smaller than you think it is.

I will keep my eyes on this; it looks promising. My only concern would be with holding big bulky items like the 84mm ammo

Does anyone know the name of the fsb clamp on the guy on the right is using? I see it a lot on Canadian military rifles

London bridge or Mystery ranch has great options. 5.11 is great for the money too 🤷

Eberlestock FAC Track but the older model (also probably cheaper now)

if not, Eberlestock Half-track.

Been using my older fac track for 7 years now, and it's bombproof. The brackets inside can hold am ammo can steady, or a 117G radio if you're doing that. CG ammo is always tough, but I've strapped some on with LAV straps. M72s slide nicely into the side pouches for easy access.

External pouches allow for better organization than the rush 72.

Antenna holes allow for that or hydration packs.

You can wear it higher to sit right on top of your LBE pouches in the back, gunfighter belts are always tougher but probably not your focus as an infanteer.

A really big plus? Fits behind the seats in the back of the LAV nicely.

10/10 would buy again.

This is a great pack, and I like the idea of it; the only problem with it is that it is too bulky and not packable. I have the ruck and then the assault pack inside of it. I really like Eberlestock, and I was thinking of something like that. I'm not mounted, so maybe the situation would be different if that were the case, but thank you for your comment!

What's the difference between the old and newer model? There any good places to find the older one?

Eagle yote or platatac spur

ATS Tactical packs. They're all good, depending on how much you'd like to spend.

I have a Blackhawk Assault Pack & I just got one of the Turkish Surplus M81 Alice Packs from Kommando Store.

My Assault Bag is starting to be more along the lines of a range bag for smaller stuff. I’ve got some mags attached on the molle outside & an IFAK, and then I can place my range tool kit and 1-2 cased pistols in it.

My Alice is pretty nice for the $30 or so I gave, I’ve got an old Nam’ issue Machete on it. Mags, food, rain gear, extra socks, a few mags, batteries in a water proof case and a map in it.

I fully recommend the USMC FILBE 3 day assault pack. Scalable, comfortable, and holds anything you need. You can find it easily online.

Anything made by Savotta. The Kahakka 25L with the Varusteleka beaver tail is great, and it’s quite expandable and without the foam back panel, perfectly stuffs into a bigger backpack.
