I think “convinced” is the wrong word, here. They just hate black people and gay people. They don’t care what Trump does, long as Black people and Gay people are disenfranchised.

My coworker was listening to a crypto bro talking about the “[gay slurs]” ruining everything just an hour ago.

They just hate. Full stop.

The Republican propaganda machine has tapped into that by giving them something to hate. Black people. Gay people. Immigrants. Anyone other than themselves. Anyone they are told to hate.

Even though the hatred is build on bullshit, the threat to those groups that it creates of thin air is very real and tangible. We can't not defend ourselves or our loved ones that are affected.

And so the filthy peasant class gets stuck fighting amongst themselves, even though many can clearly see the bullshit for what it' is, while the rich get richer. If I didn't hate it so much I'd say it's a pretty fucking brilliant strategy.

They aren't willing to challenge themselves in any way that leads to personal growth.

They still have that evolutionary desire to grow/risk/progress, but they're afraid of it.

The only way they can temporarily shake the feeling that they aren't getting better is by convincing themselves that other people are worse than them in ways that they aren't willing to risk validating.

They can't feel better about themselves so they have to feel unjustifiably worse about others in order to make themselves feel better relative to them.

Bigotry is the coward's narcotic.

Pretty much.

I grew up in that rural conservative culture, and looking back on it now it's clear that my whole life in that space revolved around using hate to A) repair my own ego, and B) deepen relationships with other conservatives by bonding over our shared hatred of <insert out group>.

If you would have told me at the time that I was a hateful person, I would have sworn on a bible that you were absolutely wrong. But looking back now, it's very clear that my whole internal mental life orbited around a dense, black hole of hate and unresolved anger.

Perhaps the worst part is that the hate is just a means for self-enrichment for those peddling it. LBJ put it nicely and succinctly:

If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.

Brother, you voted Biden. I dont think your discernment is worth much.

no one cares what you think

Someone just broke down how the root of conservative reactionary thought is hate and you mention Biden? In what way did anyone who voted for Biden do it to "own the conservatives" or holding a flag up for hatred?

Exactly what I have been saying. It doesn’t matter if they are uneducated or giving up public benefits or any of that. They are hate filled people and that is what moves them emotionally. To boot they are afraid of anything that challenges their hate filled views and they attack that too.

its absolutely wild how much of the left STILL doesn't understand this. We're literally more than a decade into trump and his fans spewing and loving bigotry and hatred, yet still there are large portions of the left who are still like..'man..i wonder what their motivation is. i'm sure going to college will fix them'

They have been told the "left" is doing what the right is currently doing for decades now - stealing freedom and government and building a fascist empire that's destroying the economoy for their special interests.

When you believe those are your enemies, then you deally don't care much about the moral character of the person fighting them. "Enemy of the enemy is my friend" and all that.

and women. they hate women, quite a lot.

They do. But unfortunately, that includes a lot of women.

gender traitors.

It’s not that simple. I know two separate people, neither of them racist or homophobic, and they’re both in favour of Trump because they are cynical. They make the “both sides” argument about everything. They believe all politicians are corrupt, so Trump is fine

I respect that you know these people. However, I didn’t know my coworker was a POS until 5 years after knowing him. I also know racists have a meme after Dragon Ball Z where they say they are “hiding their power level” by not saying bigoted shit in front of the wrong people.

So you’re probably right about those people. But I would be extremely cautious about anyone who voted for Trump being racist or homophobic.

This is true. Everyone I know who is pro-Trump that I thought weren't racists, homophobes, or misogynists turned out to be at least 1 out of 3. This explains the feelings of being censored by the left because they've been self-censoring their hateful opinions all their lives because they (correctly) assume that a just society wouldn't tolerate them. Trump legitimizes their their low instinct to deeply mistrust people that are not like themselves, and if that's really true (it isn't), then everyone deep down is racist and sexist (they're not), so then why not just let white men take over (they already have, but they don't see it that way because they think they are the victims and by "take over" they really mean a full on fascist white ethnostate).

8

u/ilikepizza2much 1d ago

Both things can be true. But it’s not just racist homophobes. This is what happens when the truth doesn’t matter. When podcasters are trusted over scientists and real journalists. Ignorance and fear will reign

2

u/this_my_sportsreddit 1d ago

But it’s not just racist homophobes.

That's the primary reason. There are other, overlapping circles sure, but the singular thread that ties the majority of trump support together is white supremacy. This has been studied, documented, peer reviewed many many times.

How do you explain people of color also voting for Trump? Trump and the republicans preach the gospel of hatred. They say it’s okay to not have any compassion for your fellow human beings. This appeals to many people for different reasons. Trump says screw your neighbour and screw the planet. Do what’s right for you.

The problem with that: It's right wing propaganda so, they're actually just tipping their hats about their political affiliation. Those are right wingers...

Most people understand that one party supports democracy (the concept of expanding government to everyone) and the other is conservative (the concept of only allowing a tiny group of people to have power in government.)

From that perspective alone, not many people should ever consider conservatism, because it's not designed to the suit the voters. It's designed to do the opposite...

It's two completely different things and right wingers like to pretend that's not true because it obfuscates the reality that conservatism is the polar opposite of democracy...

This is the position of conservatives: They have to lie about their political party because they know it's toxic... If they want to win, their choices are: Lying, cheating, and stealing, because they'll never win on their fundamentals because fundamentally, the party shouldn't exist. It's clearly cancer to modern productive societies... The whole purpose to it is preventing society from moving forwards while some rich douchebags line their pockets.

It basically only exists just to remind us that there is giant dickheads in the world that we need to watch out for... And there they are... They flipped everything upsidedown so they put a criminal in charge of free people and they're thinking that's a good idea because they'll make more money.

Like as if they've never read any one of the get rich quick scam books... It's so absurd, people fall for the dumbest tricks...

neither of them racist or homophobic

Or so you believe.

i think most politicans are either corrupt or can be corrupted. the days of integrity are done because so much shit is on the table. that being said, fuck trump and what the repubs have become. if the dems are still corrupt, they are less corrupt than the repubs or are just better at keeping it hidden. repubs are just on the pole for everyone to see dancing for their dollar.
