The one thing I find most scary and most fascinating about most people, including myself, is how unbelievably easy it is for anyone to convince themselves that anything is true or OK. Even if it means they are a massive hypocrite, its super easy to simply switch that off and say 'nah its different for me'

She found that they weren't "evil" necessarily and not even that intelligent; they were just obedient underlings doing what they were told to do...

Basically when society tells them something that was once unacceptable is now acceptable, most people don't think twice and it becomes their new normal. This is why propaganda channels like Fox are so dangerous. You can see the shift year after year towards fascism and what was inconceivable only a decade ago is now accepted and will eventually become the norm. What Nazism taught us is, there is no bottom to this process, even in a society we call "civilized".

The book "Blitzed" by Norman Ohler is an excellent exploration of both of these subjects. The subtitle of it could be "Were the Nazis crank fueled meth heads?" and the answer is "largely, yes".

They even had meth laced chocolate called Hausfrauenschokolade for housewives so they could do their housework at super speeds.

Valid, but from personal experience other stimulants don't have the same degenerative effects and if you have ADHD and take modern prescriptions correctly it pharmakinetically makes people "normal" not meth goblins.

As an engineer and a history buff, I always thought about what it would have been like for engineers at places like BMW or Krupp to keep working on weapons even after the Nazis had revealed their full evil. How could one do that?

And so I am now unemployed, because at this point in American history I refuse to continue working in the defense industry.

The actually scary thing is that the ideology might not be totally wrong, it's just that they have it twisted.

Look at the history of slavery: it was the law of many countries for centuries, yet the entire time there was a small group of people who fought against it on behalf of the slaves, for no other reason than they thought it was the right thing to do. A small group of people, promoting ethics and compassion, in spite of their whole society.

Look at all the movements and seligions that got started over millennia which basically said "let's stop being shitty to each other and just work together, and let people be."
And then they get ostracized and killed for that peaceful message.

Maybe some people just are born better. In all recorded nations, among all "races", across time, some small fraction of people just seem to be born better than everyone else, and they drag the whole world into a slightly less shitty direction.

Nazi shitheads are the other end of that spectrum, the people who think they are better, based on nothing, and use that as an excuse to lie, cheat, steal, rape, murder, and subjugate.

And all the people in the middle who just do whatever the closest person says to do.

If good is defined by what you do, then you need to do good things in order to be a good person. If good is simply something that you are, then no amount of bad deeds can take that away from you.

Most people have goodness and badness inside.
Having it doesn't mean you are it.

There are no "good people" who continually and willingly conduct evil deeds.
Nobody is good because the merely have thoughts of selflessness and charity.
Someone who never acts out their worst inner thoughts and impulses isn't evil for having the thoughts and impulses, they're just in possession of an evil aspect.

Good people don't go along with evil out of convenience or self-interest.
Good people do good things when there is no reward for doing it, even if it costs them something.
Even in situations where they are under threat of violence, good people either stand up to evil people anyway, or they find ways to continually undermine evil.

People who have greatness in them are proactive in their efforts, and are able to convince other people to do the same.

If you only do good things when it's easy, convenient, and/or free, that doesn't make you a particularly good person, you're just an average schlub who isn't actively evil. That's most people. Most people just go along to get along, and like to think of themselves as being "good people" just because they aren't aggressively evil.

It's not just about "good" or "bad" though, I'm saying that maybe some people are just objectively better humans who are extremely effective at being whoever they are, good or bad.

There are people are born into an inequitable system who don't accept inequity, slavery, vapid bigotry, or short-term-only thinking, who are able to set successfully balance their self-interest against the well-being of others in a sustainable way, and who are able to motivate others to do good.

We have sociopaths and narcissists who are excessively self-interested, and who go out of their way to hurt people.
Why couldn't there be people on the opposite end of the spectrum who have the best qualities of humanity in abundance, and that compels them to action?

That's an uncomfortable proposition, because we love the story that "anybody can be a hero" and "anybody could be great".
Historically, it sure as hell seems like movements coalesce around individual figures and then collapse when those people are gone.
It sure as hell seems like society is consistently being moved by small groups of unusuallly effective people, for good and ill.

I don't think anyone wants to entertain the idea that we're all side characters in a narrative that is being driven by people who have a "main character" trait.

A lot of people are products of their environment.

Some people believe all people are bastards because everyone they've ever known has been a bastard.

It's not necessarily a MAGAT's fault they are the way they are. Maybe Dad beat him in the name of God, his older brother stole all his food, and the only media on ever was Fox news.

yeah i think a lot about how ubiquitous peer to peer global communication (i.e. internet, social media) exposed existing cultural rot, versus how much of that rot was introduced by this reactionary right wing growth.

 

Prior to widespread internet, i think many of the "middle american conservative evangelicals" may have legitimately been unaware how outdated bigoted their whole culture basically was.

So they showed up to "the internet" and got absolutely inundated with all these supposedly awful or immoral cultures sort of openly just existing and posting, and got metaphorically punched in the face with a rejection of their insular religious bigotry.

 

So religious and conservative strategists of course jumped on that fear, and weaponized it, and also, via botnets and paid influencers and all that other jazz, recreated the safe space on social media networks by overloading algorithms with "safe" messaging.

so people like poor innocent grandma now logs on to facebook and thinks all is right with the world again because she sees AI generated croissant jesus instead of second cousin billy's pride parade photos from the big city. And the angry people get a whole tiktok algo convincing them they're "winning."

I’m starting to think the internet in general is a mistake. I mean, I’ve known that about social media for a while, but idk man the internet seems to have started to reverse humanity’s progress backward.

All scientific studies say humans are more lonely than ever, it’s a health crisis. That’s humans existing right now. All the studies say none of us like to online date, that we don’t know how to make friends without relying on social media. Like the majority of us would rather be talking to people in the coffee shop, but we aren’t cause we’re all on our phone in the coffee shop. It’s nuts to me. It’s actually changing our brain development.

Like I’m 34, I remember what it was like to have to be present in the real world all the time without a computer world to escape to. You HAD to be with people. & I’m lonely as shit & rely on the internet for socialization cause of depression.

Now what does is a lonely 34 year old look like 30 years from now? Someone who literally never had to have that human interaction to have relationships?

TLDR: The cons of the internet are getting really close to outweighing the pros & it’s being reflected society

The "time before the Internet" wasn't all gravy train. Some of us don't live around people where we fit in. As a geek, growing up in the late 80's and through the 90's had its rough moments. Now try being a POC, non religious, pansexual AND a geek. Pretty much everything that the right hates and "normal" people made fun of. Imagine how lonely that was before being able to find similar people online to talk to. Something to think about.

Disagree. It's all down to the shitty social media platforms, not the internet itself. It can be an absolute lifeline if you can't just get out of the house and keep up with the kind of social life you could manage as a relatively healthy 20-something or just a random student with no responsibilities. Overworked in a shitty job, stuck home looking after kids, disabled, elderly, moved away from your friends by life circumstances, a persecuted, isolated minority, or even just too damn introverted for it to be worth it to go out? The internet absolutely made all those things easier to keep socialised enough with before social media companies decided to ruin their products to make line go up.

Like I said, there are absolutely pros. I don’t mean to sound cold hearted, but the cons have now outnumbered them.

It also gives suicidal people advice on how to kill themselves. They even can be encouraged by online strangers. Or someone previously completely happy can be driven to suicide by online bullying. It enables lonely people’s behavior, & even spreads it to people not lonely. There were ways for people like you are describing to interact with the world, with phones & snail mail. But the reality is they are in the minority. The cons have now infected the majority of the population. It’s actually begun to make society worse.

The internet used to make people more informed, everything you wanna know at your fingertips. You can take free online college courses, you can learn skills like art & carpentry & mechanics. You can even learn a new language. You can be an expert on current events. Now it brings criminals together like pedophiles. Now child pornography is shared around the world, & will never be eradicated. Those victims are permanently on the internet.

But now it’s turned the truth into being subjective & having the “facts” you want to believe confirmed by others. A big chunk of the population now lives in an alternate reality. It used to be we all agree on a set of facts, & the debate was how to solve problems. Now we are actually arguing about what is true. AI is going to make all of this even worse. Like, SO much worse we can’t even imagine it right now. It’s gonna be like the damage caused by the creation of the nuclear bomb. The internet has ceased to make society better, it’s all downhill from here.

I used to think if Trump is ever gone, things will calm down. But..it won’t. Why would it? The mindset is already entrenched. Each administration is going to get more & more extreme. The wedge is going to get wider & wider. How could we possibly fix this?? One side is not going to just come back to reality.

It’s just so sad. The ones in control are not reflective of most of us. Most of us want to get along & have our leaders just compromise & admit when they are wrong. Act like the human beings they are when no audience is watching. But it just doesn’t wind up that way. & it won’t.

Huh? What 8 guys? I was talking about a giving philosophical opinion about the internet & how human nature has warped a tool that should have advanced us overall as a society. Now it’s doing the opposite. In an ideal world, no one would have to rely on the internet to have social connections. But that’s impossible, so we have to go by what helps the majority overall. Thats my opinion.

& I think the internet, overall, has become a negative influence. It’s deteriorating every facet of society. It’s sounds like your opinion is different. I’m part of that group btw, I don’t have any friends lol & the internet has enabled me to isolate myself from the world. I even gave you a list of reasons of why it also harms the same people in that group.

My philosophical opinion on social media is it would be a lot better if it weren't just there to make a profit, and having seen the differences between a society where most people were offline, the web 1.0 and early social media era, and today, the offline era was worse in almost every way for anyone who couldn't fit in.

It's not even that human nature automatically wrecks everything, it's only when you mix that with too much inequality.

That's the crazy part, with all of the power of information available at their fingertips, it's caused people to double down on their localized beliefs since clearly everyone else is crazy. There's no way that their entire life has been a farce.

Every openly MAGA person I've met has been the least traveled or diversified in their upbringing. They simply cannot accept that their lifelong opinions are wrong. There is no logic, just pure hatred for someone telling them that nana was a piece of shit.

There is a very strong correlation with big city's and democrats. Because they have legitimately known people of other colors and class that are good people. It flips the script real quick.

Farmer John who married his high school sweetheart and never moved out of the 5,000 person town can't even fathom anybody else being an equal. It's disgusting. The few who I grew up with that leaned right moved out to the country where nobody knows any better. And guess what? None of them have ever had a passport.

Hating can literally release endorphins, dopamine and serotonin to deal with the stress that comes from how they perceive their world to be.

Fox news has spent decades dosing the people with daily sprinkles of hate. They create the stress first by presenting absurdly out of context if not totally fabricated viewpoints and issues, then follow those stress inducers with hateful rhetoric that allows the viewers to get both the urge and release in one sitting. Its why its something old people have on 24/7 in their homes. Not the millions of movies and tv episodes, but fox news running 24/7... ITs why young people flock to social media personalities and joe rogan. They do the same, they give them a series of stress inducers and then follow it up with the release through hating minorities and woke and socialism and dei and whatever acronym or group they decide is at fault at the moment.

And everyone enjoys a little hate. Have you ever watched a movie, or seen a game, or heard a song and just disliked it, like you cant understand why others would like it, or you watch segments on daily show or olivers show and get angry but also get a release from them making fun of these things and people, then you go online and read someone sharing that opinion or talk with your friends and they also agree it sucks, it feels good right. You feel justified you feel acknowledged you feel a little happy.... relaxed....

Now imagine that amped up to 1000.

BUT over time people become numb to the hate, it becomes normalized just like anything in excess would do.

UNTIL Trump came along and gave them a new level of amygdala hits like they were taking fent laced crack cocaine straight up their buttholes. And once they got that taste of that kind of high....

Ooooo boy, its like trying to convince your neighborhood crack addict with no teeth and rotting toes that he should stop hitting the pipe x 1000 because their crack is everywhere around them 24/7, its on the radio when they wake up and go to work, its around the office and during lunch breaks, its on their doctors waiting rooms, in their grocery stores, in their gyms, even when they hang out, they talk about how much they love their hate crack cocaine so much, they love to share and boof each others buttholes. They spend their nights before sleeping just taking another hit, so they can dream about their hate. Heck they even go to churches that preach that hate.

To help someone who is brainwashed and inside a cult, you need to take that person away from the cult first and foremost. But like i just wrote, they are surrounded by it everywhere. And with Fox News and Sinclair media owning almost all local news stations, and the rise of social media hate peddlers, its pretty much impossible to reach them.

Trump could literally rape a child on 5th ave in front of every news station and joe rogan and instagram social media influencers, and they would still vote for him next time and find a way to justify him raping a child in front of their eyes and in turn their voters agreeing and blaming the child or democrats or biden or obama.

Because they are addicts. They want their hit of hate no matter what.

The main watershed was Reagan, under whom tons of protections were removed (e.g. the requirement of news outlets to give facts, not opinion) and the stage was set for the mega rich to start attaching themselves like ticks and sucking it dry.

This is just an acceleration of that.

You are getting to the core of it. Projection is a specific psychological mechanism for people who lack empathy. Consider that such a person cannot understand how other people think, let alone that they could think differently. All they can do is project the way they think onto others.

Another important point is that the lack of empathy is a mental symptom that can spread, as it has in every cult and fascist/authoritarian state throughout history. Good luck out there.

I’ve interacted with so many of these people over the years. They’re not tortured internally, they’re perfectly happy.

Their general knowledge is so poor that they’re not able to connect the dots and see the big picture, plus they live in the moment and so they don’t really worry about the future of the country. They don’t have any anxiety about the state of the country or signs of rising fascism because this is all meaningless noise to them.

They don’t look inward and self-examine. They live shallow lives only thinking day by day. Work, leisure, friends, food, living in the moment. If they’re ever forced to think about a policy issue, they default to whatever their side says about it.

One of my coworkers was convinced our state lottery tax was more than enough to fund our education system every year. I pulled up the stats and showed that it could only fund a single semester with the revenue the tax has generated since being implemented (it's been at it for several years now).

Her solution was to spend even less on education.

We live in Mississippi. And she wants to spend even less on education than we already do.

She also believes that we don't need federal funding (welfare funded by blue states) or state income taxes. Around 66% of the state's budget comes from those two things. Not according to her.

I can't fathom being so stupid. So inexplicably, irredeemably dumb.

The right has built a permission structure for this kind of authoritarian regime for decades through relentless agitprop while the media manufactured consent with relentless enlightened centrism, false equivalencies, and nuance poisoning.

And while this was happening, the Democratic party fully succumbed to corporate capture, leaving no actual opposition in Washington to fight this fascist takeover.

This 100%. Trump will often blame others for what he has done himself or could imagine doing himself. Rigging election is one. He either done it in the past, and if not he is already planing for it in the future.

The United States must reaffirm its greatness ?

Everything is simplistic to an extreme.

With logic like this, we're going to manipulate the masses.

Find ways to overcome the fears and anxieties fueled by influencers like Rogan and Fox News.

The goal is to seize power and, behind it, make money.

This is the primary goal for Trump and his troops. It's easy to see how the ideology of MAGA leaders ultimately serves their wallets.

To ease their consciences, they pretend to be fervent believers, while the leaders pushing for these repressive laws have only one goal: fewer rights and more money for the rich.

This is also why the Epstein case was initially pushed to the forefront.

Democrats are pedophiles. Another easy solution to win votes.

Ultimately, once in power, they impact those involved, or those who support the MAGA movement financially, or judges, and they will then go back on their words and bury the Epstein case.

Do…do you not think democrats do all the same stuff? Like, look at the current election in NYC. Cuomo and trump are straight up collaborating right now—and all congressmen have the same sponsors. They all lobby against the same exact people, do all the same insider trading (generally speaking.) and send all the same missiles to the Middle East.

Granted, I absolutely think democrats are overall better. But come on, it’s all the same game to most of these people
