I don’t think it’s that, I think it’s more so that their evaluation of themselves is incredibly high and this is a convenient explanation to justify why their views/values may not be as popular as they want to believe.

More like they need to convince themselves that what they know is wrong and want to do is okay because the other side does it (it doesn't).
