the guy slavery'd so hard he ended up exterminating the entire native population of Hispaniola (now Haiti/DR) inventing the basis of American chattel slavery, and now he's the face of "slavery wasn't half bad, kids"

Bahamas too, an entire people gone. There were thousands of inhabitants all living a peaceful fishing existence in paradise. We know almost nothing about them, and they were all gone in less than twenty years, mostly taken to work plantations elsewhere. The Bahamas had no inhabitants for more than seventy years after they were emptied.

Haiti/DR is a really interesting example of turning points in history, the two nations on the island are similar in a lot of ways with the exception that the Haiti side evicted colonial rule in 1804 after a failed French invasion by Napoleon (and they then executed every single white settler that couldn't escape) and the DR side stayed under colonial rule until 1965. By the end of the 20th century the two countries that share the island couldn't look more different.
